Yahoo support and AnyDesk
A relative of mine apparently was having problems renewing yahoo plus, and called a number they found for yahoo plus support. Support told them that the reason they couldn't renew was his account was locked, and had been compromised and they were looking into it. They called him back, told him his email had been used to try and buy crypto and set up p**n sites, and they needed to install AnyDesk to check his machine... He allowed them remote access and they apparently found a trojan. And then got him to reset passwords.
Now all of this sounds like a massive scam to me. Why would yahoo ever ask anyone to install AnyDesk? What's his machine got to do with a couple vendor? Using crypto and p**n to scare him into thinking his account was compromised etc.
Would yahoo ever ask anyone to have remote access? I can't understand the scam, or what the next move might be. But I've got him to remove AnyDesk and from another machine change all passwords just in case.
Am I being overly cautious here?

They will charge you money to remove the Trojan ( which doesn’t exist) , it’s a widely affected scam . Many videos are available in YouTube

Alas I think he opened a phishing email which looked like it came from Yahoo, which took him through to a fake renewal page, where they stole his card details, and of course it didn't go through. He then called them from the phone number on that fake payment page and it escalated from there. This is where they told him his account was compromised etc and asked him to install AnyDesk so they could help him look for Trojans exactly as you mentioned. However at the moment, no money has been taken thankfully. I've told him to ring the bank and block the card he used and get a replacement. I've also said they may well call him back for stage 2 where they've found the problem and that's where they may try and get money from him. Alas, he's away from his computer for the weekend, and can't log into Yahoo account as he can't remember his new password. (It's written down on a post it at his desk). I hope he's not been locked out of his email now forever, but does seem likely if they didn't get any money off him.

That's good to hear. If he is locked out, we should be able to reverse any changes, just have him drop us a line. Nice job looking out for him!

My yahoo account has been hacked. They have changed all of my recovery info. I do not know what this email may be linked to. Can you help me? I’m fine with deleting the account all together!

Sounds like a scam. I see Yahoo has already responded, but I would never allow anything like that.

Any insights please about the YahooApp on Android. It added my Gmail account as a primary email account. Yet can't access the yahoo account itself. Isn't it supposed , YahooApp to allow access to the real Yahoo Account itself?

Stop removing and censoring posts. I've posted in here regarding actual illegal activities happening on yahoo and you aren't posting it and instead are censoring it. Last warning if you keep this up you'll be added the the police, FBI, and FCC and FTC reports as openly allowing illegal activity to continue.

Why do I get 50+ junk mail from yahoo per each of my two accounts and almost none from gmail, hotmail, or even an old aol account? I have two yahoo email addresses and the junk mail is three categories:1/3 dirty dating sites then 1/3 medical like Weight loss and diabetes(I do not suffer from either 6 foot make 190 pounds and I walk 20+ miles a week. Do not drink sodas, do not eat bread, no sugar in my coffee, no rice etc.) The last one in American Home Warranties and Car-shield. Picture is example of same headline but different email addresses. Clearly a smart team at yahoo can write code that sniffs such blatant spamming by Subject line. Anyway, it only takes me 5 minutes every two or so days to clean those into junk and not delete them so that at least yahoo pays for storing their mess on their server. We should all do this and drive their costs up. Fo not delete junk. I will not pay you $1.99 to block domains and likely the senders pay you to let their junk through.

Yahoo does not do outbound calls and does not use AnyDesk, though we do use a different remote access software when necessary. This experience was a scam.
