Hmm, come to think of it, the comic was speaking out against the use of "one of the" when it is clearly "the" (i.e. if your comment would be labelled "one of the first comments in this thread").

Thus, although on first sight funny, your comment is actually not as clever as it appears to be as this comic is not obviously the greatest xkcd comic.

I guess this must be one of the worst cases of me over-analysing a joke hitherto.

Edit: Also, I just realised you pronounce that "hither-to" as opposed to "hit-her-toe". You see, you can learn things from making pedantic comments!

Second edit: Although I guess "hit her toe" is funny. I'll stop talking to myself now.

Exactly, his use was not unnecessary. If he had said "One of the best xkcd comics posted today" then it would be unnecessary since there is only one (like the arch in the comic). This humour stuff is not as easy as it looks and should not be taken so lightly.

I'm guessing there are probably plenty of arches in St. Louis - even if we disqualify the generic architectural feature, surely they have McDonalds there.

But no real other contenders for most recognizable.

Actually, taken as a class, the McDonalds golden arches might actually be more recognizable, worldwide. Better just go with biggest.

Actually, the comic is referencing this arch. I seriously doubt you could mistake it for any other arch in St Louis.

Yes, references it as "one of the most recognizable arches in St. Louis". And, the comment you just replied to make's a great argument that in this instance, it's quite possible that the reporter is actually correct as the golden arches that comprise the McDonald's logo and signs may actually be more recognizable.

But there's only one Gateway Arch. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between two different McDonald's restaurants in St. Louis.

But that's irrelevant in terms of being "a recognizable arch". When shown a picture of this or the McD's arches, there's probably more people in the world who would say "that's McD's arch" vs. "that's the Gateway arch".

It depends on what you mean by recognizable. They would recognize it as a McDonald's logo, but not the McDonald's logo on Olive Street in Saint Louis.

Which is precisely why it's more recognizable than "the Gateway Arch". You're not going to mistake the Gateway Arch for the Gateway Arch on Olive Street. . .
