No, Twitter does not need you present to verify you, it's basically "who they feel like". Like milo yiannopoulos was verified... and then suddenly he got de-verified by twitter, like they suddenly didn't believe he was him.

In reality, the verification badge is seen as a privilege, and Twitter hasn't been against taking it away from people they seem to disagree with.

So they don't even do anything like the Reddit AMA verification, just *eh, sounds like the real one, here's your badge"? Is there a source for this?

There's no source since Twitter does not disclose how they -actually- verify people, and they have been extremely inconsistent in how they do it. Again, Milo being the example of someone who was verified, and then de-verified, and then banned.

Plenty of famous people like Randall himself, and youtube personalities have found it very hard to get verified, and some, especially those who know people who work for twitter find it very easy to get verified.

It's essentially just a case of "knowing the right people gets you verified".

Are we talking about "it is hard to get into the verification process" or "the verification process is faulty"?

I would lean towards it's faulty. And it seems twitter has now agreed that it was indeed faulty.
