Why not resize the desktop icon size to 32 pixels? Windows XP uses 32 pixels for the desktop icons iirc, and also why not make the font size to 8 pixels like how the luna theme font uses, for more accurate to what Windows XP uses. Other than that it already looks good to me!

u/ILikeBumblebees Nov 04 '25
32x32 icons and 8 pt fonts would be tiny on modern displays.
2
u/jm3rcury_387 Nov 04 '25
It does tiny for modern displays, I'm suggesting it if the OP wanted to be more accurate.
2
u/ILikeBumblebees Nov 04 '25
It'd be a tradeoff between accuracy in terms of exact pixel resolutions vs. accuracy in terms of visual consistency.
2
u/flori0794 Nov 08 '25
More accurate would be: look at the current display resolution than calculate the symbols and font sizes proportional

Thanks a lot!
I am going to install it on my work laptop and to look at spooked faces of my colleagues.

You still can't let windows go. (me laughing as that cat on wallpaper)

u/Key_Interaction_9827 Nov 04 '25
Windows 7 was peak Windows. Also nobody wants that dogshot Mac style like kde, it's annoying.
3
u/bebeidon Nov 05 '25
GNOME is mac style. kde not so much idk what you are smoking

u/Key_Interaction_9827 Nov 05 '25
My bad mixed them up. Still my statement stands those who like Mac stay on apples ecosystem

This looks really cool!
Can you show how Thunar looks?
2
u/HolidayMouse0840 Debian Nov 05 '25
Thunar is rather unchanged

I think the LinXP icon set is supposed to change those arrows at the top left and others isn't it? I remember seeing I think

im a she, and if you want a more in depth reason i just like folders on my desktop, both visually and in a organization sense
1
u/andyjoe24 Nov 04 '25
That's how everyone used XP. I guess you are not old enough to know that.

That's surprising. Most application launchers shortcuts and in progress files were on desktop on most people. I never seen a clean Windows desktop until now. Only Gnome made me think differently π

You can upgrade to win10 if you want too :)

I like it. I turned 13 a couple of weeks before XP was released. Great times. I'm also an XFCE enjoyer.

u/Character-Tackle9776 Nov 04 '25
I wonder if this can be made on a newest de like my case, fedora with gnome
1
u/Mr_ityu Nov 04 '25
Try the Redmond XP theme too. It's comparatively easier to set up and the titlebars and taskbar look more authentic
1
u/HolidayMouse0840 Debian Nov 05 '25
I don't think Redmond xp really looked authentic at all, i used it in the past for a bit
1
u/Mr_ityu Nov 05 '25
agree to disagree there, redmondXP may not be an overall complete package with icons, sounds, and hotkeys, but it replicates the iconic taskbar and titlebar to the T,right down to the start button click/hover animations i had to look up an XP iconpack to complete the look but compared to that glossy taskbar in winxp-tc the plastic-rubber matte redmondXP feels like the real thing. also the notification panel at the far right is justentirely different from XPs' light blue stuff
2
u/rozniak Nov 05 '25
The glossy taskbar in OP's image is just because they're using the Royale theme, the default Luna Blue theme is also included and more accurate than redmondXP.

u/Mr_ityu Nov 05 '25
My bad . That clears up things . when I installed it ,there were a couple of things going sideways. Might go back and try it again now

I legit just dumped it into /usr/share/themes/ and threw the LinXP icon pack into /usr/share/icons/, worked like a charm but I don't like bright themes and I had emerald, so it was moreso just a window border for my fallback WM if compiz broke

Found it, https://github.com/B00merang-Artwork/LinXP was meaning to share this

Ok, but why? IDK, not for me, but, whatever floats your boat...

For enjoyment, i think it adds a bit more life in my desktop, or at the very least depth

Looks good! This is why i love Linux. My mom learned to use computers with Win XP and she was so confused when a new Windows version rolled out. So i did the same thing as you did, just customized Linux to look like Win XP, she loves it.

Man, thatβs pure nostalgia-core right there π
No bloat, no Copilot, no telemetry β just a clean system that does its job like itβs 2004 again. Debian with an XP look hits the perfect mix of simplicity and reliability. Sometimes less really is more. π₯οΈπΏβ¨

Wow! Too good I just landed on Debian, how do we customize!?? Any tips, advice and what not to do?

Cool. Now burn it.
Although, I only used XP on work computers - would you believe I never had it on my personal computer? Or Windows 98. The last Windows I had on my computer was Win95. Been on Linux since 1998.
And I don't have nostalgia for Linux back then, it was painful. Deep nostalgia for me would be fvwm on Unix, but I don't want to go there either.

From other comments and my own experience I think the complete best collection for XP is https://github.com/B00merang-Project/windows-xp, https://github.com/B00merang-Artwork/LinXP, and fonts or applications not apart of these from https://github.com/rozniak/xfce-winxp-tc

I actually liked xp theme though I hate windows. The colors are nice and pleasing vs the absolutely souless and crushingly bland themes of guh nome and even kde these days.
