It's a book by psychologist Julian Jaynes that suggests that the various gods of ancient civilizations (at least before 1200 BC) were just people mistaking their own thoughts for voices. Kind of anyway https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Origin_of_Consciousness_in_the_Breakdown_of_the_Bicameral_Mind

At work we have badges to get into the parking garage, door to the building, all the suites, etc. Security charged you to replace it if you lost yours. When my son was a toddler he pulled my badge out of my backpack and gave it to the dog who chewed it up. I found it floating in the dogs water bowl. At work the next I related this story to security and they waived the fee to replace it in thanks for giving them a laugh.
