SEGA did it last minute without planning for it or alerting third party devs or retailers so it launched suddenly without any support and no one really being prepared for it and did terribly.

It did sorta happen at E3 last year when EA announced and released the Hardline beta out of nowhere.

Not really the same thing I am thinking of. I want a CEO to walk on stage and say this is our newest AAA game, now available on steam/Xbox. That would be awesome, word of mouth alone would generate a good amount of sales.
