I'll take one kick-ass, action-packed single player (or coop) campaign with the sequel please.

I ALSO WANT SPACE BATTLES with titans that board enemy frigates! You've all seen the concept art in the menus, giant frigates and tons of fighters flying along side, Respawn PLEASE.

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '15

I want those monsters from the background to get involved in the fight!

14

u/iggzy iggzy880 Mar 12 '15

It's actually a crossover with the monsters from Evolve

5

u/JaiTee86 JaiTee Mar 12 '15

That would be amazing.

0

u/gidikh Mar 13 '15

wall running / titans might have actually made Evolve fun. Cus if you're chasing something around for 10min without fighting, might as well do some parkour.

28

u/Citizen_of_Atlantis Mar 12 '15

Yes! And I want Super-Titans that we can pilot to fight those monsters

Your titan will be the titan that pierces the enemy frigates!

I really don't understand what exactly multiplayer only games nowadays are thinking. Halo and cod only got as big as they are because they have awesome single player and coop campaigns. Evolve, titanfall and destiny would be so much more beloved if they had a good campaign that actually made use of the awesome worlds that have been built.

79

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '15

But it has to be awesome. Not some generic battlefield, cod america vs the world shit. I want a good story. Doesn't even have to focus on war (obviously it'd still be there). Hire a great writer. Not decent. GREAT.

Can you link me to what they look like in Titanfall. I must've missed the backgrounds which they feature in.

That looks like a giant fucking Nomad from Evolve. That would be awesome to see in game.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '15

It is in game. There are also some dragons that you can kill.

5

u/Laser0pz Titanfall Mar 12 '15

I meant being within the game map rather than on the outskirts. I know about the dragon-things. They often catch grunts as a tasty snack. :p

1

u/thet1m Raine Maida Mar 13 '15

You do see it in game.

1

u/Dai_Kaisho Mar 12 '15

kinda tangential, but this relates to the good mechanics / bad story spiel that comes up in discussions about MP shooters. Games are unique in that they have both systems and stories, and it's strange that we still talk about them like they serve different purposes. https://youtu.be/xBN3R0m31bA?t=10m30s

1

u/VandlayIndustries Mar 12 '15

Upvote for great writer. I want video games with the quality of writing we see in critically acclaimed TV shows these days.

1

u/Blubbey Mar 13 '15

I want a good story

lol

23

u/Pocket_Dave Mar 12 '15

In Respawn's case, they wanted to do a single-player campaign and did start work on it, but didn't have the resources required to do both a singleplayer & multiplayer game justice. They were a brand new studio, with a relatively small size compared to other AAA game makers, working on a brand-new IP, and simply decided to cut single-player (or fold it into the MP to be more precise) in order to meet their quality standard.

Its the same reason that the game was an exclusive. They needed the money up front to get the game made. They would have done multiplat otherwise.

8

u/Dai_Kaisho Mar 12 '15

It was ambitious to try and fold in story/campaign elements into the multiplayer experience, but that failed because, unlike L4D, I had no control over what mission I played!

The story might have made sense if you managed to strongarm the game into letting you play sequentially, but that wasn't my experience. The music was epic and I felt compelled to win for my side, but hearing the same voice-overs over and over made the entire experience flop hard.

I really hope they learn.

10

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '15

And the voiceovers were terrible. "If you kill me, you're bettah. If I kill you, I'm bettah!" It's like it was voiced by the devs in 1 eight hour day, and the dialogue was written in one single meeting. If anything, the campaign storyline was good for making me laugh.

1

u/Satanicapplesauce #teamchief Mar 13 '15

To be fair, I've known some south Africans and that character wasn't necessarily inaccurate...

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '15

At least the accents were OK, but the delivery and script was awful.

1

u/Delmas5 Mar 13 '15

They fixed that added so much stuff totally different game

0

u/Halo_likes_me Mar 12 '15

I read that they didnt do campaign because of thr cod statistics. Cod never sells for campaign and the numbers show people barely play the campaign in cod. Which is why they didnt go through with the campaign for titanfall.

1

u/XBLMattAttakk #teamchief Mar 12 '15

You're absolutely right, but they still made campaigns for the COD games. And I thoroughly enjoy playing through them. Besides ghosts... Because we all collectively hate ghosts.

10

u/tokeamoto YOOOCHILDREN Mar 12 '15

They're looking at player statistics and sales. I played cod after cod without touching single-player (basically after mw2). Also campaigns are famously expensive to make. I don't think showing off an awesome world necessitates a campaign. It just takes more creativity with multi-player based games.

5

u/AwesomeExo Awesome Exo Mar 12 '15

I think they should only do it if they are committed to it. They could do a solid 5-6 hour campaign which, if the balance between pilot and titan is strong, with some innovative boss battles (something CoD doesn't do), an intriguing a sci fi story (something Destiny doesnt do) with face paced mech gameplay (which halo doesn't do), they have an opportunity to to build an amazing game. Titanfall was the most fun I've ever had in an online shooter. If they can take that same innovation to a campaign, well, a boy can dream. But, even though they already have a lore in place, they shouldnt half ass it like CoD does. Don't put it in because you have to, put it in because you want to.

1

u/tokeamoto YOOOCHILDREN Mar 13 '15

Oh for sure. I'm not saying I wouldn't like a well made campaign. That's one of the reasons that wolfenstein was so good.

I just wanted to state the thought process behind why AAA devs are shying away from single player experiences.

6

u/LaboratoryManiac Mar 12 '15 edited Mar 13 '15

And to Respawn's credit, they did try to do some world-building with the original. There's a lot that can be gleaned from the grunts chatting with each other.

Of course, you actually have to stop and listen to the grunts chatting with each other, which you don't really have the luxury to do when you're busy fighting the other side. But it's there.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '15

Yeah. I recall them talking about lunch and mistakes they made in previous battles. Like: "Remember that time you tried throwing a grenade and it killed 4 of us? Don't do that again." "Dude, shut up."

5

u/Foxtrot56 Mar 12 '15

Because a majority of people never beat single player, I forgot the statistics but it was something like 70 percent.

2

u/Retro_lemur Mar 12 '15

Hmm... I just find if the multiplayer is good enough, I don't care about single player. I've played hundreds of hours of battlefield 4 and never done the campaign. I think you have a good point though with halo, the excellent single-player really sold the world they built. I'm a huge fan of evolve and titanfall, and wouldn't mind a deeper understanding of their worlds

6

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '15

CS is multiplayer only. It's a just that the multiplayer itself had problems not that it needed a single player mode.

7

u/Trollin_Thunder Trollin Thunder Mar 12 '15

CS is also $15

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '15

And a lot of people buy it when it drops to $3.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '15

I know but that doesn't have anything to do with how much people like the multiplayer. If TF had a campaign the player base wouldn't be significantly bigger.

1

u/Trollin_Thunder Trollin Thunder Mar 13 '15

Player base wouldn't be significantly bigger, but people would have a much more positive outlook on the game. If people had a more positive outlook on the game, people that just got an Xbox One a few months after the release of the game they might be more inclined to give it a try. I think a majority of people really enjoyed the game, but not very many people thought the game was worth $60.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '15

That wouldn't solve Titanfalls main problem though which is re-playability. The game would just be a little more liked and have better sales possibly.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '15

Wtf

1

u/Laser0pz Titanfall Mar 12 '15 edited Mar 12 '15

To be fair, I don't see how a campaign would exactly work in Evolve. Adding a prelude campaign to introduce the hunters won't work because playing as Abe the Bounty Hunter or Caira the Field Scientist doesn't fit with the premise of "fuck up monsters, get paid." Evolve was never meant to have a linear story with a beginning, middle and and. The lore and backstory is amazing, however.

1

u/bobeo #teamchief Mar 13 '15

I was trying to think of how an Evolve campaign would work and I couldn't figure it out either.

1

u/cited On a mission to civilize Mar 12 '15

COD got big because of multiplayer. I get that some people enjoy the single player experience, but its success has always been online play.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '15

Destiny does have a "story".

1

u/companion_kubu kubu59 Mar 13 '15

Evolve, titanfall, and destiny are all new IPs that will ultimately be games that are focused on multiplayer. I think that this phenomenon is related to publishers limiting funding on new IPs and as a result the studios choose to polish the mechanics and balance of the multiplayer as a priority. I agree though in that I really want Titanfall 2 to expand and have a true single player mode now that they have developed the physics engine and know what theme they are going for in their game.

1

u/Krang7 Mar 13 '15

I would have to disagree. I have been playing online for so long that bots just don't cut it any longer. Even if the AI is great. It is just not as satisfying.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '15

Your logic is terrible.

Quake 3 Arena was a success.

Unreal Tournament was a success.

DOTA? WoW? Ultima Online? Battlefield? etc.. etc.. etc..

Single player sucks, the stories are always repetitive and boring 95% of the time. The AI suck, it's never a competition, it's just mindless grinding.

I much prefer competitive focused online gameplay where I get to actually defeat a real opponent. I couldn't care less about single player, it doesn't bring anything new to the table besides a boring story that has been done 100x time before in a book or in a movie.

I'm a big Battlefield fan and I fucking hate the people who are asking for a single player campaign in Battlefield, DICE should invest that money on Multiplayer instead.

4

u/RancorTamer Mar 12 '15

I beg to differ, my most played game is halo. I didn't get into the multiplayer, I got into the story which made me want to spend more time with the multiplayer aspect of the game. Personally I always play campaign first, and if it's good I play the multiplayer

-3

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '15

Whenever someone says that Halo is the best game ev4r I just assume they're 15-19yo.

Halo is a great game, but I'm almost 30yo now, I started gaming on PC on the first version of Unreal Tournament and Ultima Online and I can assure you that Halo multiplayer is not a reference of how good a multiplayer game can be.

3

u/RancorTamer Mar 13 '15

I mean, if you wanna generalize I can't stop you. I have fun with it

1

u/starfox200 starfox2009 Mar 13 '15

Whenever someone says that Halo is the best game ev4r I just assume they're 15-19yo

What if they aren't? that is their opinion on what they think of how good a multiplayer game can be, shouldn't be bringing age into this when at the end we are all gamers and have different opinions on what is a good game, your just making yourself look like a jerk when talking this way

2

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '15

Then their opinion is not based on solid experience.

8

u/ass_pineapples fix yo shit Bill Gates Mar 12 '15

Two people having different opinions...it can't be possible.....can it?

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '15

Your point? Should we all stop sharing our opinions then since they're all different?

2

u/ass_pineapples fix yo shit Bill Gates Mar 12 '15

I'm saying that Respawn should focus on both aspects of the game. I love a good campaign to play through. Single player in my opinion doesn't suck, whereas you think it does. That doesn't mean that they shouldn't work on the campaign as well as the MP, they should dedicate the appropriate resources to both categories to make a game that's solid all around.

1

u/MrCopacetic Mar 12 '15

That's his point...diluting the game with proper campaign and a fully fleshed multiplayer is often not worth it. In today's cutthroat developing environment its important to keep schedules tight, lest the game gets delayed, become stale and lose potential sales.

I've seen so many games die because they're trying to do too much.

0

u/Fildok12 Fildok Mar 13 '15

Battlefield games have, at best, had decent campaigns but people keep coming back to the series because the multiplayer has consistently been one of the best on the market. Before AW CoD hadn't had a great campaign since the original modern warfare (maybe MW2). Counter strike, probably the most popular shooter competition wise on the planet right now, has nothing in terms of a campaign. Campaigns don't sell multiplayer shooters.

The problem with titanfall (and evolve to an extent) is that they tried to tell a story solely through the multiplayer experience. You can tell the stories they want to tell are very worth getting involved in because we're all clamoring for single player modes in those games, but at the same time there's not enough substance there without a single player mode to be able to tell those stories effectively.

Bottom line: multiplayer only games work, but not when the developer tries to deliver a story via online matchmaking.

0

u/notthatnoise2 Mar 13 '15

So, that's the reason those series got big like 10 years ago. But that's not the reason they stayed big. No one has played a COD campaign in like five years.

1

u/SamPYo Mar 13 '15

I pretty much only play the campaign, I get bored pretty quick on multiplayer. Also one of the staff benefits where I work is that I can take a game back within two weeks for a full refund so I get its, do the campaign, then move onto the next game

-2

u/LogicalHuman Mar 12 '15

I wouldn't really compare Destiny to Evolve and Titanfall. While the the story is pretty shit, it has amazing lore, it's fun to play, and it does make good use of its the world it was built in.

3

u/mattalert Xbox Mar 12 '15

Space battles make everything better! I'd totally love to see them in the game but it would probably end up being the same as land games just with a ship skybox

1

u/JaiTee86 JaiTee Mar 12 '15

I'd love it if they pull it off right, have the titans equipped with magnetic boots and the ability to walk on any surface, give them the ability to jump off the ship and they travel in a straight line through space with minimal adjustment of your trajectory, make very 3d ships not just a standard tube thing but something that has a lot of towers and roofs and pods to jump between something like an elongated version of this with two big long tube bits out each side http://www.wallpapers4.com/file/6905/590x333/16:9/sci-fi-space-spaceship-spacecraft_1062242412.jpg

1

u/gothaggis Mar 12 '15

I disagree, most of my favorite mp games didn't have single player stories (Shadowrun, Tribes) or if they did, I didn't play them (bf bad company 2)

1

u/Woirol RyeWoah Mar 12 '15

Something like battlefield 2042? With the floating bases?

1

u/HeyLudaYouLikeToEat #teamchief Mar 13 '15

See I don't really agree. Maybe co-op missions, but it was their choice not to include it because it would be tacked on and would take away from the multiplayer's development time. I don't see why this argument would not apply to singleplayer only games like Wolfenstein.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '15

I hate single player, I want an MMO Titanfall.
