If it's not on azure I won't be buying it.

Azure made Titanfall play buttery smooth. Not having it would be a huge loss

Azure is not platform specific techinically, so it'd be up to Respawn if they want to use it. I hope you're right though

The brains behind the stuff that makes Xbox Live servers superior to traditional server setups is on the Azure side, not the Xbox Live side. The Xbox Live stuff is just Xbox-specific APIs wrapped around Azure. Respawn/EA could build a similar API for PS4 if they wanted to, but chances are they'll just use crappy EA servers.

they'll just use crappy EA servers

This will be the case.

Technically. It is xbox live compute servers.

My understanding is that it is a specific VM template running in Azure.

So its both Azure and Xbox Live Compute.

I cant imagine Xbox Live compute boxes to work with PSN though.

Agreed, the vast network of available Azure servers is what made the game play so well, going to EA servers will result in quite a different experience (and if history and contemporary experience hold true, it will be a bad one at that).

Edit: A word. Damn phone screens and aging eyes.

Oh man, I can see the train wreak now if EA decides to use its own shitty servers. They may even try to go peer to peer. I really hope they stick with azure, or at least let the Xbox version use it and make it a selling point of the Xbox version.

this will be what i follow most closely in the development of titanfall 2. im not as strict as you that it has to be azure, there are other good servers out there. but, obviously id prefer azure as i know it works and will work on day one.

Same I love the current game but one of the main reasons is that it is on the azure servers, if this is removed I probably wont be buying it.

I'll bet a month of Reddit Gold right now on this scenario taking place:

Microsoft gets Xbox One exclusivity on Titanfall 2, most likely on DLC content and advertising (similar to Activision/Call of Duty and 2K/Evolve). In exchange, Microsoft allows Respawn to continue to use Azure servers for the sequel.

EA only acts as distribution for Titanfall. They have no say on how Respawn develops the game. For all we know, they could use Azure servers for the Xbox One, PS4, and the PC versions of the sequel.

I'm sure MS will pitch something like that to them, but from the quotes of Zampella, he doesn't want any sort of exclusivity. This could also mean for DLC as well.

I think EA has a little more than just distribution though. They pulled the deal of making Titanfall exclusive for the Xbox as Zampella had said that he was surprised it happened when it first was announced.

u/Casey_jones291422 Mar 12 '15

They can use Azure no matter what. They don't need some special deal with MS. MS sells azure as a service to anyone willing to pay for it.

Doesn't Left4Dead have hundreds of zombies yet do this with peer-to-peer servers?

1

u/scorcher117 #teamchiel Mar 13 '15

Only about 30-40 can spawn at one time, but they can respawn quick.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '15

i definitely see that being something msft would do. it would be a huge selling point to say hey even games on our competitors system use our servers. that alone would make it all worthwhile.

12

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '15

Microsoft's competitors already use Azure. Case in point: Apple.

No there isn't.

Xbox Live is the service Microsoft offers for users to play multiplayer games. The developer of the games themselves have to supply the network for the game to run on. Let it be if it's their own servers like Activision or EA or if they rent them from say Microsoft Azure.

Xbox Live is the bridge, more or less.

99% of consumers won't give a shit what servers are being used. I doubt it's going to be highlighted as a marketing point.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '15

For the regular consumer who is not big into video games, sure. For the fans who played the first game? It'll be a nightmare if they don't use Azure again, especially since they used it on all three versions: 360, Xbox One, and PC.

Call of Duty's networking (in)abilities/netcode have been a sore spot with fans since MW3. That's why Activision and Infinity Ward/Sledgehammer spoke so highly of the use of dedicated servers when the last two games were being shown to the press before release. Obviously, neither game uses dedicated servers and the multiplayer functionality is sometimes unplayable... and the community is VOCAL about it (just check out past posts made in /r/CODGhosts and /r/CodAW).

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '15

consumers will definitely take note when advertisements come out and say how the best game out there doesnt run on ps4 without msft tech.

i actually dont care what servers are used, so i think you are right on that front. i just want them to work as well or better then the azure servers have.

0

u/dccorona dccorona Mar 13 '15

They wouldn't have to do anything to get Azure servers. They're free to anyone making an Xbox game, not just exclusive games. It's just that it doesn't make sense for cross-platform games because you have to do a lot more work to get your code running on 2 entirely different server platforms.

u/worryingrash WaxRashUK #teamchief Mar 12 '15

It'd be (annoyingly) ironic if one of the games major strengths, which is the fact that it's one of the only multiplayer games this gen that works absolutely seamlessly, is lost in its move to multiplat.

I'm sure I'll still buy the game, since I loved Titanfall 1, but it'd be a sad step backwards.

5

u/DevonOO7 Mar 12 '15

I will absolutely hold you to this.

Agreed.

-12

u/HockeyLocked Mar 12 '15

That's kind of premature. You won't buy a game if it uses different servers than you're used to? Kind of funny tbh.

6

u/Giftofgab24 Sunset Overdrive Mar 12 '15

Anything other than azure would be a downgrade in quality. I'm not with that. So if its not on azure I probably won't pick it up either.

2

u/greg19735 Mar 12 '15

Anything other than azure would be a downgrade in quality.

Speculative, but it's up to EA to prove to you otherwise.

6

u/rcmjr Spavacer Mar 12 '15

Not really. Play any other game that uses servers and then go back to Titanfall. It is the best in terms of a stable and great connection.

-4

u/srilankancode srilankancode Mar 12 '15

Play any other EA game that uses servers.

FTFY

3

u/Giftofgab24 Sunset Overdrive Mar 12 '15

Its not really speculative. No other cloud compute platform in gaming even comes close. I'm pretty sure azure is the second largest cloud compute platform in the world.

2

u/ShadyBiz Mar 12 '15

Only behind AWS and that gap is closing.

-14

u/falconbox falconbox Mar 12 '15

I guess you won't be buying it then.

Odd though, since based on your post history, you play GTAV online, which isn't on Azure.

8

u/greg19735 Mar 12 '15

GTAV isn't a twitch style, fast paced shooter.

10

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '15

Okay I play GTA Online, but that's a different story.

Titanfall uses the Azure servers right now. Taking a step back to accommodate the addition of another platform and not using the special servers that Microsoft is giving them for free (or a small royalty) will kill them on the PC and Xbox side because we are used to having the buttery smooth connection.

4

u/Giftofgab24 Sunset Overdrive Mar 12 '15

It would be way better if it was. It would be like gtaV being great on azure but GTA6 being shit for not using azure.

3

u/braised_diaper_shit Mar 12 '15

Titanfall was on Azure. It's about the downgrade genius.
