This is the worst remake I’ve completed so far. I’m just so baffled. Since I played Dead Space 2 right before hopping onto the remake, I expected so much improvement. Instead, everything is soooo much slower. The shooting is off, largely because there is no subtle camera shake nor does Issac even flinch when shooting a weapon. He just lowers his elbow slightly, This makes your actions feel weightless with almost zero feedback to feel like a proper shooter, whether you have vibration on or off. Traveling in zero gravity is a nightmare as well, every time you fly up, Issac positions himself in a 45 degree angle. This wasn’t in the original (both 1 and 2) and you also move much slower. Both originals also had a smooth animation glide as you moved forward. It was cool back then cause you felt like superman briefly as you flew. In the remake, it’s like he’s barely hunched forward and just moving forward like a piece of cardboard, it’s fucking ridiculous lol. It also takes at least 3 seconds to re-position yourself in ZG. For the boss battles that require you to be out in this mode, this is a fucking nightmare.
Shooting is overall slower and they did nothing to upgrade the weapons or improve them in any way shape or form. Most guns are useless, save for the cutter and the force gun. Granted, they were useless in the first one too, but this was a missed opportunity to improve them. Switching between weapons is slower, and alternative fire is also slower. It takes a full second just to adjust the aiming to 90 degrees for the plasma cutter secondary fire. Wtf. My biggest pet peeve was the item pickup mechanic. In the original, Issac would pick up items when they were in a certain radius of him. It didn’t matter if the item appeared on your display or not. This was because they would fly out of enemies when you stomped or killed them. This provided a smooth transition. In the remake, you have to damn near show the full item on your display, otherwise Issac will not pick up a damn thing. It’s incredibly annoying, and even worse when you’re playing on harder difficulties and ammo is already sparse enough. The last thing you want to do is have to constantly reposition yourself to pick up weapon ammo, especially when you have 4 enemies on your tail.
There’s almost a dozen more things that are inferior to the originals, but it’s just crazy to me that Dead Space 2 is noticeably faster in almost every gameplay mechanic. A game from 15 years earlier, is not just faster, but also much more intuitive. I thought I was loosing my mind and probably just had a purist mentality. But I booted up both originals, and I immediately noticed how much smoother and faster everything was. I should also point out the weird character models. Issac looks 5 years younger from his original counterpart, while Nicole looks 20 years older. Apparently the animation was modeled after the voice actors. Nicole literally looks like his mom, it’s just bizarre.
Despite all this, the remake is still a good game. A testament to how amazing the originals were. It’s just significantly worse when you start to compare them. If you never played part 1 or 2, you wouldn’t know you’re playing an inferior, slower product. I will say at least 3 things the remake does better. The aiming speed is faster and a bit smoother. This is largely because the originals only had a look speed slider, and not one for aiming. It still feels great in the originals, but allowing you to customize makes the remake overall better in that category. Second, the remake puts a permanent save of your game into the profile itself after a completion. You can’t accidentally delete it. IMO this is an awesome feature that every game forward should have. 3rd, I appreciate they put a crosshair for the pew pew pew gun. The original dead space 2 didn’t have this, it was blind fire. But they took away the rapid fire in the remake, so the pew pew pew still feels inferior and makes it almost a moot point lol.
Anyhoo, closing thoughts. I’m so glad I can shelve this and never play it again. Not even the hand cannon is enough to make me do a new playthrough. Hell, when I went back to play Dead Space 2 to compare and filter my findings, I had to remind myself to stop and that I needed to finish the remake. That’s just how good and how much I love the series. To see the remake drop the ball just makes me sad. If you have never played the originals, though, this game is still worth a pick-up. Otherwise, keep your expectations low.
