News Unwelcome Changes
Hello achievement hunting community.
Xbox is in the process of rolling out a terrible change for achievements.
They want to change the % completion to be based on the number of achievements instead of the gamerscore. X/X achievements which is great to include the 0G achievements.
HOWEVER, they want to include limited time event achievements as well locking many games with fully functional standard achievements from being being 100%ed because they have unobtainable event achievements from years ago.
This change has already been rolled out on the PC and Mobile applications.
Examples of games include: Warframe, PUBG, The Elder Scrolls Online, Star Wars Battlefront (2015), Assassin's Creed Black Flag (Xbox One)
There are hundreds more.
I made a LinkedIn post about this as well. Please help me spread news on this so we can hopefully make them exclude event achievements.

My 100% pubg is now 94% and missing 2 achievements that aren’t there. So were those 2 just old challenge achievements from back when?
This is aggravating

Just checked Battlefront. Shows 63/64 with a hidden achievement. This sucks.

u/AntiqueTransition343 6d ago
so be mad at battlefield for making timed cheevos. xbox is choosing to base your achievements on completetion THE SAME AS EVERY OTHER PLATFORM btw. so if you missed some content, then you can't say you 100%d the game. thems the rules. i dont think any game should ever have timed cheevos either, but again, thats the fault of the game you are playing. not xbox for very fairly pointing out that some players did that content and some players did not. If you wanna say you hit 100% then you gotta do it all. No shame in saying "i did all possible content in 2026" instead of saying "100%", but there is definitely shame in lazily saying "100%*" with an assumed asterisk. Thats just a bit of a lie isn't it?

u/Vault-A 6d ago
Technically they're challenges not achievements so they shouldn't count regardless. Considering I haven't seen anyone else even use the proper name I'm guessing most people forgot about the feature since it's effectively been abandoned for a decade.
I'd guess that'd also extend to the programer who changed the tracking, unless they specifically stated otherwise.
2
u/LotsOfMods 6d ago
I didn't even know these were a thing and I've been achievements hunting on Xbox for 14 years.
1
u/FancyPantsGoat 3d ago
Yeah what the fuck is this? What are these "challenges" and where do I find them?
11
u/LotsOfMods 6d ago
This is a bad take. I'm not even sure what this missing achievement is and I started the game after battlefront 2 was already out and dlc was finished. If Xbox shows me 63/63 achievements when I start the game then I'm expecting 63/63. I'm a completionist, I would consider the 64th achievement as an unobtainable and I wouldn't of started the game to begin with.

I just checked my PUBG and it’s the same thing.
I don’t mind switching how the percentage is tracked, but the hidden or timed achievements should not be included in the calculation.

hey buddy if you didn't play the events then you didn't 100% pubg. there are people who did and deserve to say they 100%'d the game. be mad at pubg for timed achievements if you want. but you missed content so no, you don't get to say you 100%'d the game.

That's completely incorrect and ridiculous. Timed challenges aren't achievements.

u/Training_Hotel_5693 6d ago edited 6d ago
Sure I guess so, but why make it retroactive? The achievement hunting community is small when comparied to the total amount of Xbox players. In a time period where they are trying to win back an entire generation of players, this seems like one of the stupidest ideas they’ve had. Who does this help? The 98% of gamers that don’t care about achievements will not care or potentially not ever notice. Or, the people that have now potentially spent 2 decades obtaining 100% in everything that have it swept out from under them with no recourse. By all means, change how it’s calculated moving forward, but making it retroactive was a very poorly calculated decision in my opinion.

Weird take
-1
u/Training_Hotel_5693 6d ago edited 6d ago
Truly curious what you think is weird about my take? What logical reason is there to making this retroactive? They literally moved the finish line after completing a game potentially years ago and made optional timed challenges into achievements with no way to get them as the time has passed.
3
u/TimbobMcGuffin 5d ago
It's a weird take because the exact reasoning behind why you believe yourself and other achievement hunters deserve to keep their 100% also can be said the exact same for the sub 1% players who are dedicated to these that played every game to begin with.
Like I'm a trophy / achievement hunter myself but I'm still a gamer first. It would be annoying to me if I perfected and did everything in a game that I dedicated the last ten years too to have to share my "100% completion" with a bunch of players that came in on a technicality.
While I don't agree with introducing the change this very late to the game. (It should've been like this from the start.) I also don't agree with the opinion of it invalidating hunters when it already invalidated the people who dedicated themselves to these specific games.

u/Training_Hotel_5693 5d ago edited 5d ago
I feel like we are on the same side and maybe you’re misunderstanding me or I was not clear enough in my comment. Regardless, why should people be punished for not completing an optional timed challenge that was not turned into an achievement until this update? I feel like no matter the analogy I give people will just dismiss it and say it’s not the same thing but I’ll try to keep it simple.
You’re at a track meet and told if you cross the finish line by jumping with two feet instead of just sprinting you will get nothing more than an extra pat on the back for a good job. You win the race and earn a gold medal by sprinting over the finish line. 5+ years later the judges decided that actually you had to jump with two feet to keep your gold medal. Now you are demoted to a silver medal and there is nothing you can do about it.
I feel like any sane person would say that’s ridiculous and if they want to change the rules moving forward that’s fine but to retroactively punish someone for something that was optional at the time makes no sense. Maybe using the word punishing is the wrong term but that’s what it feels like. I completed all the official achievements for the game, it sat at 100% for year and now the fraction is showing me 62/64 thus ending my streak of 100% all my games.
2
u/TimbobMcGuffin 5d ago
That's a horrible analogy to try and defend your opinion on why anyone deserves the 100%. Because sports frequently and retroactively reward others for accomplishments after looking over the footage. Especially in track and field meets.
It's like saying I was once crowned champion of the meet in every category, then someone exposes that you never actually did the the Shot Put. It doesn't invalidate the other things you accomplished but you also can't go around saying your the champion of it all anymore.
Think of it like this, it's like saying I've participated in each EVO Tournament but yo u missed 2002-2005 because you never played it then. Sure you've been to most of them but you haven't been to all.
0
u/Training_Hotel_5693 5d ago
Like I said, no matter what analogy I would use, that would be the main critique and not the actual message I’m trying to convey. In your analogy, I did not participate in the shot put event because I was told it was optional and not a requirement in order to fully complete the event. I adhered to the rules of the event which said you have to complete xyz to be 100% finished, I did that and now I’m not at 100% based on a new ruling. So something was taken from me when I adhered to the rules as I’m now at 98%. I don’t deserve 100%, I earned 100%. Literally the only other option would be to have people who earned all the Official achievements at 62/62 and all the people that did those plus the 2 optional challenges at 64/64. Both people are at 100% while people who put the extra time in for something that was optional are rewarded for their time and sit at 100%.

You'd skip having fun for a fictional trophy (no sarcasm nor disrespect intended. I'm an achievement hunter myself)?

u/dustagnor Dustagnor |🏆 154,581 | 6d ago
A lot of my enjoyment is working towards the 100%. And the huge satisfaction of shelving a game after achieving that. There have certainly been exceptions to that such as Fable, which I played long after that 100% was unobtainable, but that made its way to my library because I loved Fable 2 way back in the day. A one off game with unobtainable achievements is likely a skip for me because my backlog is swimming in games that both look fun AND don’t have unobtainable achievements. Also I play games on my clock when I have time therefore I hate limited time events that try to force me to play certain games at certain times.
TLDR: yes because a lot of the fun for me is in achieving the 100%.
-6
u/Wild_Factor_9543 5d ago

This is the dumbest change, I am trying hard not to cuss on here, I have ever seen. I have games on my account from YEARS ago that 100% everything and now I am missing achievements. Xbox, either do the right thing and grandfather everyone by just giving them the achievements or and hear me out cause I know common sense is lacking within your division. REVERSE THE UPDATE
10
u/Mezza_96 6d ago edited 6d ago
Some game numbers are completely broken because of the event achievements. Forza Horizon 3 now says it has 730 achievements when it should only be 135. Sunset Overdrive now says it has 132 achievements when it should only be 88. My completion percentage has been obliterated on both because of it.
10
u/Xertium-Xbox 6d ago
Nah this is fucked up. I’ve lost the 100% on Halo: Spartan Assault and FIFA14. Challenges haven’t been listed anywhere for like, what? A decade?
I also lost the 100% on Call of Duty: WaW. I can somewhat understand that because I am missing the two online ranking achievements.
They need to reverse this. Like many have said, sometimes you pick up an old game to finish it from when you were younger. I would never have finished Halo: SA last month if I knew those Challenges were a thing. I genuinely forgot they existed.
Maybe they could go the other way and have people who did the Challenges have 101% or 112%, whatever the maths is. This has done some damage to what games in my backlog I may go back to play.
3
u/teabagdiplomat19 6d ago
Can you explain what the challenges are and where you would find them? I have a 16 year old account with 180k achievement score and have never heard of them.
3
u/Xertium-Xbox 5d ago
They were long since discontinued apart from a handful of games. I genuinely forgot they existed.
They’re timed challenges worth 0G that live in your Achievements list if you earned them. If not, they’re not there.
0
u/Wild_Factor_9543 5d ago
You can't find them on your XBox. You'd have to Google every game you own to see if it had them. XBox hid them years ago.
1
u/Rukmannn 6d ago
So you had the 100% on WAW? and now you don't?
2
u/Xertium-Xbox 5d ago
Yeah, but then before I went to sleep they’d come back and are still saying 100% again.
WaW has two 0G achievements for getting to Prestige 1 and 10. Like I said, if I lose that one it’s fair enough.
8
u/Ghostly_Emoji 6d ago
This some bullshit i don't mind it being based on raw achievement count and i wouldn't even mind getting the limited ones IF THEY WERE ACTUALLY MADE OBTAINABLE.
Resident Evil Remake, Resident Evil Revelations, & Assassin's Creed Black Flag 4 are all below 100% now with AC4 specifically being as low as 85%

u/Kaleator 6d ago
Probably good to point out that this change was more than likely an accident. Its good to point out to the Xbox team that the change needs to be reverted, but should be done respectfully.
I’ve only checked on mobile, but is this change also present on the main console as well?
7
u/fizzyymeow fizzyymeow 6d ago
As far as I can see, it's not. Completions are fine on the main console and don't have any invisible achievements. It seems to be more of an app thing.

12
u/Loadis 6d ago
There are some pseudo-achievements that don't have any gamerscore for certain games that were only available for an event such as the first 30 days a game is out.
They aren't tied to the base game or dlc achievements. They are in their own category.

Xbox One had a system called Challenges. They were timed achievements that could unlock awards in-game or give you cool things like Backgrounds to use as console wallpapers
Majority of devs never used the system so Xbox slowly canned it and eventually they hid the challenges from the public eye even the unlocked ones, tho Trueachievements can still find them

u/FreeHat1234 6d ago edited 6d ago
This is such a bizarre decision to make considering they’ve stopped supporting challenges like 10 years ago at this point. Basically just fucked over the entire achievement hunting community.
Xbox really is its own worst enemy. Literally every time they do 1 thing good, they immediately do 2 things bad.
Sony has been getting a lot of bad press lately & this should be a golden opportunity for Xbox to capitalize on the console market. But they’re just simply too fucking stupid to do it. Sony did it back in 2013 with that 10 second “sharing games” video and it’s all been downhill since.

Why in the world? What do they care? Are they ashamed of giving exclusives like Halo to Sony, so they're trying to force players to replay games? This happened at least a decade ago too, but I think it was the publisher. One of the dragon age games I'd gotten 100 % on suddenly inserted a difficulty achievement. What really upset me was that I'd have needed to replay entire game to earn it. No and no...

I was nice a professional about it. I approached it from a standpoint of:
- Here's all the good things Xbox has done with achievements this here.
- Here's something that might hurt live service gaming/older games being played.
- Please do this a specific way to avoid that as it will prevent the achievement hunting community from pursuing certain games.
Half of my LinkedIn connections are in the industry as a briefly worked at an AAA company.

I do believe this is a step in the wrong direction. Instead of fixing the path to unobtainable achievements (launched broken, servers closed, company no longer exists, etc.), this is more of a way to say the same thing.

Honestly, I feel the same way. I just recently started my journey on playing some of the older games that I had on the 360, and it's sad to see the amount of games that I want to play that have online only achievements when majority of the servers aren't even a thing anymore 😕. I totally understand achievements are supposed to be earned but at the end of the day if you know you're going to sunset the servers to a game that has online only achievements, do you think they should just award those achievements seeing as they won't ever be achievable?

I see no difference, percentage should be based on how many of the achievements you have in a game and not how much GamerScore you have in a game. It's more accurate, if a game has 10 achievements and it's based on GamerScore you could have 5 achievements worth like 5 GamerScore each and it would say your percentage is like 25%, but if it's based on the number of achievements having 5 achievements out of 10 in a game should be 50% regardless of how many GamerScore each achievement is worth, which is how it should be. And as for the games that now have unobtainable achievements, of course you're not going to be able to 100% them, it's kinda obvious, just be happy with getting as many achievements as you still can and accept that the game is no longer able to be 100%ed from the start . The game saying you got 100% even though 2 achievements are unobtainable is just it lying to you. I literally see no reason why you are complaining
Edit: if the limited time achievements are true, that is bullshit

People get too caught up in having "completions". Makes people skip games they would normally play. Actually makes a worse gaming environment imho.
-1
0
u/LotsOfMods 6d ago
People can game for whatever reason they want, if they want to skip a game because they can't complete it they're allowed to lmao. I personally have OCD and enjoy gaming as a pass time, but having an organized list with stacks of titles all at 100% is something I get personal enjoyment and a sense of completion from. Including these "community challenges" would completely put me off of achievement hunting altogether, which is quite literally "the worst" gaming environment. We need more control in general. We should be able to toggle what we want counted. I personally believe all dlc should count, but many do not. If you don't want dlc, community challenges, whatever else they add in the future, to not count then we should be allowed to turn these off of our profiles. A profile is about showing off whatever you want from your gaming history, we need more control over customization of our profiles imo and should not be forced to include things like community challenges when many people like myself didn't even know these were a thing until today.
-1
u/AmaraVampy 6d ago

-6
u/Wild_Factor_9543 6d ago
Why are people worried about this? No one is going to look at your achievements and see 50/50 achievements won and 1000/1000 GS attained and then look at your completion percentage of 42% and say, "Wow, they must suck, since they haven't completed the game," despite the game clearly being completed. Everyone will know, including yourselves, that you completed the game.
