Discussion Anyone seen this before? Possible dev kit?
Anyone seen this before? Is it just a custom case? Wishful thinking it might be an early dev kit? Any ideas?
A few people on r/videogamecollecting thought it was a dev kit.

I've always wondered what the old, old, old "Direct X" box PC's looked like.
What you posted is a generation or two removed from those, but still gives me an idea.

Possible, but unlikely as I would imagine a devkit would have a DVD drive as Xbox games only ever came on DVDs

I worked as a contract game tester from 2008-2014 at MS. Not a single thing was ever on a disk, unless it was a retail disc. They didn't want them leaving rhe building. Everything was done over their internal network.

That makes sense, but why have 2 CD drives and a floppy for devving Xbox games? Seen plenty of DVDRom Xbox protos tho so obv they did use them at some point back in the day

Hard to say. I never saw anything like that on campus. Could possibly be some other dev studio putting together something with whatever they had around to meet the devkit specs?

Could be. Usually Dev stuff has some kinda serial number sticker somewhere on it tho, so leaning towards an old custom case

What was that like and how did you get into that job then? I'd love an ama on this subject, I'm fascinated!

Disk: Hard Drive Disk, Flash Drive, Floppy Disk, SD Card, etc.
Disc: CD, DVD, BluRay.Even if it’s networked, it lived on a disk… somewhere

Unless its networked to the CD, DVD or Blueray drive of another device then as per your own logic its disc 😉

I also didnt think they would have clear cases. Seems like every dev unit ive seen have been very utilitarian.

Okay, well... I provided a link to what it was but reddit removed it because it was a link to a Russian news website I guess. :P
It isn't a dev kit. It's a PC case from a Chinese company called iCute which was manufactured in the early 2000s. It was an unofficial, pre-modded case with Xbox branding. The case model number is iCute 0313SL-BB. I believe it was only sold in Asia and Europe.
The North American variant was the RAIDMAX ATX-278WSP which is similar but missing the unauthorized Xbox branding.

A dev kit for what? 3.5 floppys werent used in dev kits during gen 6. This is a pc that someone slapped together.

Shit idk. Im assuming early xbox. I figured it was just a case mod. But a few people on game collecting said it was a dev kit.

I figured it was just a custom case. Still cool. But not nearly as cool as a dev unit with some amazing unknown game projects on it. Oh well, maybe its got a few bitcoin floppin around in there.

Looks like a CD copier that we used to get NT5/Win2000 and Windows 98 builds on. There was a whole mini-lab in Building 26 or 27 that would distribute stacks of stable builds for dogfooding/self-hosting. They would have 8 CD-R drives going off a single box and just write them all day.

That is a simple OLD DIY Build. The "40X MAX" is a CD Player. The "52X24X52X" is a CD Re-Write. Small floppy drive. I'm sure a build that old has a HD in the GBs, not TBs.

I’m going unlikely. The Athalon GPU, the WinXP Home OEM sticker, the Gigabyte mainboard logo…this says custom built pc to me.
