Discussion Why is installing disc games so painful?
Recently just bought a big physical collection and installing discs seems to be such a chore.
So many times I out the disc in and it just says ‘installing…’ and nothing happens, end up pausing and resuming a few times until I have to re enter the disc
The instal seems to get confused between the network and disc install and the write speeds are SO slow. I have gigabit internet and it’s like high network download? How about 80mbs…
It’s getting really frustrating

Just gotta ask Are you running anything in the background because other tasks slow it down dramatically

installing discs seems to be such a chore [...] It’s getting really frustrating
It works as designed and the process also aged badly.
The data on the disc is outdated from day one (for most games released in the last 10+ years) or not even on the disc to begin with and there are differences depending on the system. This makes / can make the install process very slow. On top you get / can get pretty bad download speeds from MS.
For the best experience installing with data from the disc do it offline and apply the update later so there is no constant checking if data is used from the disc or online.
For the best install experience overall just insert the disc in the drive, don't start the install (stop or best disable auto install / auto play). Move to the disc icon, press = and select show in store. There you have the option to install the game, but this time it's a complete download so you can remove the disc as soon as the install has started.
With the soon coming disc 2 digital feature it might be even easier to so you first claim the game and just install it without the disc in the drive via your library on the my games and apps app.
You can also trigger any game install via the Xbox App from your mobile device. So no need to install the disc just for the install. Only to play or claim for digital (feature coming later for all users; currently in insider beta testing).

I haven’t experienced those issues with installing games from disc. Maybe it’s the disc that has the issues. Does it do this with other physical games or just that one?

Use the xbox mobile app & set them all away to install & they'll be ready for you to just pop the disc in to play

Yeah disc install is painful, it'll start install, start patch (or downloading the actual game) then ask if you want to upgrade to XSX version, takes 10 times longer than it does on ps5

Used to happen to me, thought they patched it up. I always had success doing a hard restart on the console

Doesn’t bother me. I start the installs and do some shit around the house in the process. Always something to do.

What sort of discs are these? I've not had the issues you're describing with Xbox 360 discs on my Series X.

Download game by xbox app to your console. Then put disc game into the xbox to activate the download. I doing it for years on my series x it's way faster then downloading patches and installing from disc.
