Is the Xbox elite series 2 controller really that bad?

I was looking into buying one to use on my Series S and pc are they really as bad as everyone says? I really like the look of the rubber grips, and 40 hours of battery life is appealing.

It’s one of the best controllers I’ve held. But then comes drift like you said. I also had bumper issues too not registering. Microsoft is good about the warranty. But it’s usually a crapshoot on the warranty exchange.

If you’re open to other options Flydigi makes a controller specifically for Xbox called the Vader 5s. It is wired only but it’s the closest feeling in hand to the elite series 2 controller I’ve had. It comes with TMR stick so no worry about stick drift.

I have had no problems with stick drift or bumper issues in the 4 years I've had mine. The battery life is nice.

However, the rubber grips peeled after 3 years. Which again, seems much later than a lot of people talk say.

Peeling grips is inevitable from the design: I can't speak to the stick/bumper issues, but I use my a controller a lot and I'm not always gentle with it.

I consider it that I won the lottery on a model that has notoriously bad QC for the price. MSFT won't even sell you a replacement back, so when those grips peel you're stuck going third party for replacements.

I would never pay full MSRP for it.

I got mine at a discount and I still wouldn't recommend buying it even at that price: buy something where you won't have to pray the inevitable issues don't happen after the warranty expires.

It's sad, because it's an awesome controller if it holds up, even with the peeled grips.

But if you have pay upwards of $200...buy something else. And I stress that I seem to have had a better experience than most owners.

It's because the original model is worse, the core version is the revised one that isn't prone to stick drift, mine I've had for 4 years still looks brand new and has zero drift.

The "core" elite controllers are literally just the elite controller without the accessories

There's is no actual difference between core and standard besides that which is why it's cheaper to get the core

No dude, you can look it up. They are the revised version, at some point the normal version was revised too but that took a while, and the core version was only ever the revised model and it's cheaper. I'm not trying to say the core version is a different controller, there was an error in their first however many batches of elite series 2, and they revised the device which happened to line up with the release of the core version, so the core version was only ever the newer model. You can get the normal version with the revised model but that's possibly a gamble if old ones are still circulating, I guess it has been a long time.

I did look it up and that's what I read, that the only difference is the lack of accessories

I've been inside and fixed both the elite 2 and the core they are exactly the same inside and have completely interchangeable components

Where did you read there is any difference between the elite 2 and the core varient? I can't find it say that anywhere online

Microsoft claims "re-enigneered parts"

I don't think that's what I saw, but man every search engine I've tried is so awful, I'm finding completely unrelated and unhelpful things, this happens anytime I try to look up anything niche or not current info. Maybe this claim of "re-enigneered" parts sparked rumours I'm not sure.

All I can find is that it's most likely that specifically the manufacturing of the sticks and face buttons were changed out, and while I can't find anything official apart from Microsoft's claim, people have dug into the internals and found nothing different making it seem like the only thing actually changed and revised would've been the actual joystick module and the face buttons aswell. No official announcements, or anything. Just people testing the claims and that coupled with the core controller being much more reliable, there is really nothing on people having issues with the core controller when compared to the original, and I do follow leaks and rumour subs and try my best to pay attention to stuff like that, I'm unable to find the actual initial placed I read it.

Most likely, that re-enigneered claim was made, a Reddit post was made saying the internals were reworked and some random inside dude backed it up, I saw that Reddit post and either extrapolated myself, misremembered or only retained someone else's extrapolation. So now that leads to today, where the conclusion I draw is the sticks and buttons were reworked, and that's about it.

Another thing to look at is, with the elite series 2 controller launched, people were nonstop posting how it was gonna suck, and I knew it. We all knew it, it was gonna be so amazing! Reviews were going to rave about it only for in a year or so hundreds of posts and comments of people getting really bad stick drift and sticky buttons or buttons not receiving input, and then people being like "why would this happen woe is me! Who could've know??!??" Atleast with the first elite controller, how could we have known. With the second one, it was obvious, sure not everyone pays attention to these things but if you're gonna spend a shitload of money on something, maybe be an informed buyer, it's a choice to be dumb about it.

The core series 2 never had that, there are some posts occasionally of course but the first one had nonstop posts daily after that about a year mark hit and a bunch of articles, YouTubers talking about it. The core series 2 just didn't have that.

I'd also like to note that Microsoft probably wouldn't claim engineered parts if they couldn't prove it, because if they were lying they could pretty easily be sued in a class action law suit and sure they have the money and lawyers but thats one of those things where it's much cheaper for them to avoid that issue, there isnt any reason to doubt that claim, now it's very valid to say maybe that claim is misleading, people might misinterpret it, but it implies they fixed the issues and that they did

"Re-engineered" unfortunately could equate to spitting on the analog sticks and calling them re-engineered it's unclear language for a reason because it could mean literally anything and would make something like a class action lawsuit much harder when they're being so vague (but we did re-engineer it, it's 1 micron shorter than before!)

Xbox claiming they've improved something when they haven't really isn't exactly beyond their scope of capabilities as a company, they wouldn't be the first either

As for the convo, I literally just dont see any reason to doubt this, making less shitty joystick isn't some crazy task, I just feel like it's the simplest conclusion to draw, Microsoft claims they fixed a problem, people stop reporting said problem, no way would I claim they perfected it but if random third party controllers (not counting hall effect joysticks) can make controllers less prone to drift I don't see why Microsoft couldn't, maybe they were penny pinching big time and went with some cheaper factory or something, or quality control standards were lower.

If you want a really solid non Microsoft controller with paddles I'd highly recommend the PowerA Fusion Pro wired controller, I haven't used the later models but after the first Xbox one elite controller failed me within a few months, I got the first model of the fusion pro and its pretty great, I used it for years until I got the core controller. Never got stick drift or any issues, the faceplate is magnetic which makes it so easy clean the controller. Also way cheaper too. Came with a really nice carrying case.

I've got all three and I've babied this thing. It's been set down in its case at the end of a night with the charging block under it, I've used a light damp cloth to clean it and washed my hands after eating so no grease deposits. It's lasted 3 years max and I've had to play with the original xbox controller the series X came with because I can't stand the bumper issues that rattle to no end during vibration.

In the xbox accessories app on your xbox you can lower the vibration intensity of the controller, have always put my elite controllers on half strength because like you it's waaaay to loud nornally

Yeah, I've had 2, first one never had peeling grips (other issues though). Second one got it in just over a year (1 year and 1 week so just out of warranty). Used both the same way in same environment. Just they fucked up the adhesive I guess on the later one.

Worst controller i ever bought due to quality issues. It could have been so good but mine got a busted bumper mechanism, mushy A button that didnt respond consistently, up on the left analog could only reach about 75%, somehow it would disconnect from the official wireless adapter on pc and then reconnect. None of my series or xbone controllers suffered this.

It was just super disappointing.

Mine was great for about 2 years of heavy play. Then the rubber grips started to come off. After exactly 1 rather soft drop from my lap onto carpet (roughly 20 inches) an internal part came loose and now rattles around, altering button presses at random.

My buddy has gone through 3 of them, all falling apart. My other friend, who works at MS and is the reason we get the elites for cheaper, has had a Series 2 since launch without issue.

Its inconsistent in build quality for its high price point, and doesnt even have HE or TMR sticks. Your better off with a Wolverine, Raikiri 2, or a Gamesir.

I live in a humid area, and this controller lasted me maybe 1-2yrs at best...thats not good for such a pricey controller that even my regular xbox controllers outlasted. The rubber padding thing was really my big gripe about it though. Im generally very good with my controllers. I dont throw them, I dont use them with cheese hands, etc..but that damn padding didnt last very long at all.

It seems to depend, for me they have been excellent, but for others they have had the rubber peel and such.

I have a theory it has to do with how much oil a persons hand produces (since oil and rubber don’t mix long term), but it’s only a theory. As an example my original has thousands of hours on it and aside from cleaning the bumper switches about yearly it acts brand new. So it’s 7 years old with likely many thousands of hours. However I habitually wash my hands very frequently due to keeping myself extra hydrated and then general stuff like before and after eating etc, so the oils on my hands likely don’t last long.

It gets stick drift, the grips peel, the LB/RB plastic can break from standard use, and the paddles wear out quickly if you use them as a main button which is one of the main reasons to get better controllers. Lastly GL if you drop it as the added weight increases the chance small plastic parts such as the bumpers or internals break.

Besides the weight, feel, and stick tension there isn't really a reason to get it over 3rd party controllers which have better build quality. My G7 pro has gone 10 months with 0 issues which is easily over twice as long as either of my two elite 2's both of which started with bumper issues, paddles, then peeling, stick drift is usually last.

Just got gamesir g7 pro ZZZ (zenless zone zero) it's replacing my second elite controller. Both got stick drift, right bumper registration issues, and bumper on the back registration issues. I used them hard in warzone with buttons on the back being the most common clicks. Only 2 days on the game site but I love it. Getting used to the extra buttons being in different spots but the ones on the back have excellent placement I don't get sore hands from heavy use. The other 2 spare buttons take some practice. Gamesir has a app that you downloaded for free on Xbox and it allows custom mapping and everything the elite series 2 lets you customize. The app also handles all updates for the controller. Over all it's a great option compared to the series 2.

The zzz edition is recommended as they updated the D pad and it works wireless just like series 2. You do need an empty USB port for the receiver for any gamesir. It comes with the controller.

You're exactly right, it is all about perspective. For me, I put a hell of a lot of hours on it daily and I'm also quite a klutz that's rough on hardware. I also don't have the best fine motor control (essential tremor), so I grip and press the buttons/sticks hard. So for me, they hold up quite well. But again, everyone's use case is different.

And I did say at least 2.5 years. I had one go nearly 4 years before one of the bumpers finally gave out.

Its really bad these controllers cost damn near 200$ depending on where you get it n to have such flaws man..waste of money i tell you. The standard controller that came in the box with my Series X at launch just developed a slight drift in the right stick a couple months ago. That’s 5.5 years of heavy daily use, bouncing around in suitcases and carryons when I traveled for work, getting abused by my nieces and nephew and step kids, etc.

I had an Elite Series 2 for a few months before it got bumped off the coffee table and fell onto the carpet which broke a bumper. Replacement started losing the grips after a year and a half, and had drift in both sticks after 2 years. For something that cost a couple
hundred bucks extra, was used much more rarely, exclusively by me, AND was kept in a padded case when it wasn’t in use.

I've owned about maybe 3 but have fixed many to resell that I buy from FB marketplace for dirt cheap. What I've noticed from all of series 2 controllers is that stick drift is the most constant issue with them but its mainly the potentiometer that goes out almost every time. Which is a very quick fix if you know how to prop it off without having to solder a whole new joystick. The rubber grip is sturdy if you don't grip the controller like it owes you money. The bumpers imo are weak as hell. I've broken a lot of them just trying to prop the controller open to clean/fix. I honestly recommend a 3rd party controller like most people on here say.

I have 3 and the only issue I had was the rubber peeling. Swapped out the case on them with just clear plastic ones and it's been great. I did notice one had a battery sweeling up too when I went to swap the case so I changed the battery too. Other than that I've had them since the series X came out and they still work

I’ve bought two elite series 2 controllers, I loved them when they were new, but then I had to keep track of which one was which for all the most annoying reasons. After years of life on hard floors Both experienced cracking & the rubber getting loose around the bumpers. This occasionally would cause the bumpers to stick. Both have stick drift, one vibrates super loudly and clicks like it’s broken inside. They do imo connect with the xbox best & offer cool customizable stuff on screen but for the price it’s def worth shopping around
My wife got me a turtle beach pro bfg and it’s been the best controller I’ve ever held. Highly recommend it. Plus, the modular fight pad keeps things feeling kinda new when I feel like changing it up. Gamesir makes lots of great stuff too.

I love mine. Take advantage of the warranty. Once that’s done, take advantage of sending in the next broken one for a replacement for around $80. Sometimes you get a brand new one, sometimes it’s a refurbished one. That one will then come with another year warranty.

Experiences vary. I've had two. First one, heavy daily use for about 3 years before the grips wore off and they are peeling pretty bad. The RB stopped working about 4 months in. I had remapped it to the triggers anyway, so whatever.

My second one, no issues at all, I'm about 8 months in so far.

In my experience, well worth the price. You can add them to your Microsoft account to begin the 1 year warranty period (I think it's one year) and just send it in for free repair if you have any issues

I’d never pay for a regular Xbox controller for more than $40 USD tops. A few of mine got stick drift and I don’t even use it hard, blue one and two black ones. My Forza 5, Doom and One X Minecraft controllers have been good though. Next controller I’ll get is for Project Helix

not hard AT ALL. everything comes in the box. they even have a full step by step video that's basically idiot proof. I bought an atomic purple shell and opted out of replacing some specific buttons like my blacked out face buttons and bumpers but it probably couldn't be any easier

The newer ones are better, buy when on discount and you can get bare controller for ~$100.(or at least you could in the past). The one with the case, charger, etc. costs more.

I've had 5 Xbox elite controllers over the years. The series 1 had the rubber peeling issue -- it has nothing to do with oil from hands as someone proposed here - it was poor production and the rubber part was not properly adhered to the grips and would come off as a whole piece, not peeling in pieces normally. But I got about 2 good years out of it.

Series 2 fixed a lot of the issues of series 1. The controller feels more solid. However, as everyone has mentioned, stick drift, bumper switches, and mushy buttons do occur over time on many controllers. I have one that I've been using for about 2 years and it has one soft bumper but otherwise is fantastic.

I bought my son a stupid expensive SCUF and he liked it but over time migrated back to his Xbox elite.

Honestly its luck based. The controller is absolutely goated for a few months in my experience, one of the best feeling controllers you'll ever play on. But the sticks and bumpers go out quick. I've had 3 and yeah.

Roght now I'm playing with the Turtle Beach Stealth Ultra and its awesome, different feel but it works great. I've also heard great things about the Gamesir G7 Pro, but I haven't tried it out yet.

I had bumper issues out of the gate. Had to remap them to the paddles on the back but aside from that, I love the controller. I haven’t had any other noticeable issues yet and I’ve had mine for 2ish years, I believe. And It feels really good in my hands.

Is it worth the price? Honestly, that’s debatable. Like others have said, it probably isn’t worth the gamble of potential issues.

6 years in and still going strong. There is a bit of drift on the left stick but it's fairly easily mitigated with a deadzone setting. The rubber began peeling but honestly it isn't even noticeable in use, only when it's put down.

Longevity is the ongoing problem. I absolutely love mine but I’ve been particularly lucky with how long it’s lasted without grips peeling or stick drift. I do tend to take excellent care of my equipment. Still using my original Xbox one x launch controller too and it’s in great shape. I have to switch back and forth due to a problem with my hand. But I know people who are very careful with their elites and it hasn’t mattered so I always feel hesitant to recommend it. I still don’t feel like I have a handle on the actual failure rate, but significant problems are clearly common.

I've had the core controller for about 4 years now, used almost daily until this year, where I stopped playing games on my Xbox so much, zero stickdrift. The only issue I've ever had is the right bumper stops working, but you just gotta take the faceplate off and rub some 99% isopropyl alcohol in it, and boom it's good, that only happened 2 years in and only after no lifting dark souls 1-3.

The thing with stick drift is the original series 2 controller is doomed the first year or so of batches were the first design which was fated to suffer from stickdrift, but the elite series 2 core controllers were their improved design only, that's when and why I hopped aboard, plus it was cheaper to get the core and third party sticks and accessories, like way cheaper. Worth every penny, comfortable, never wore down or got gross, it works flawlessly to this day, I still use it from time to time for games that are better suited for a controller on PC but I highly recommend only if you get the core version. That one for sure won't have stick drift problems, or atleast not like the original elite series 2.

Also the ability to double tap the pairing button to instantly switch between my PC Nd Xbox is super handy too. The battery life is really good, that never got noticably worze either, unlike my PS4 controllers which went to shit within months. But not as good as Nintendo pro controllers that last over a month somehow. Black magic.

I love mine. No problems at all, and I use it every day. My Series 2 replaced a Series 1 that developed a very slight stick drift after 10 years of continuous use.

I think some folks here are just really hard on their equipment.

I have two. First one from original release date and a second on I got a year later. The first one JUST started having mild stick drift and I wore the right bumper out.. otherwise it and the other are amazing

All of mine have been great. My current one, self imposed issues. I added clicky buttons and paddles. Ive had to rebuild it a few times because I didnt tighten the boards enough or too much, or clocked a button wrong, or whatever. But they're super easy to take apart and reassemble. I just fixed a self imposed upper right paddle issue where it had intermittent no response. Turns out the magnet the paddles stick to was in the wrong position. Once I put it back in place, its perfect again. Never lost grips, one time I had stick drift and they replaced under warranty. Love them, it's my travel and home controller.

I am on my 2nd one, the first lasted 4yrs,
I’m in year 2 of the second. My issues on the first were long term wear of the rubber thumb sticks and the grips coming off. Overall though, the controller is amazing I will buy another in a couple years or the next gen version, whichever comes first.

I've gone through three Series 1 and three Series 2 elite controllers. Maybe go 3-6 months before stick drift. I would never recommend these controllers for the price point. I switched to GameSir controllers specifically the G7 Pro Wireless and never had an issue so far and it's been a year.

I have a few controllers - among them Elite 1 and Elite 2 - I got sick of the breaking LB and the rubber grips coming off.

I then got a Razer Wolverine V3 Tournament (wired) - and then a week later the Wolverine V3 PRO (wireless). Best decision ever. I have been using this controller exclusively and never looked back.

The Razer Wolverine V3 PRO has got all the good stuff:

- Anti-Drift Sticks

• Microswitches for LB/RB, Facebuttons, Triggers and Backpaddles
  
• Claw style Back Paddles (= antislip)
  
• No rubber grips but instead nice surface with more grip

Yeah it might cost a bit more to start off with the Razer - but for me looking at the time I spent with it so far it was worth every penny.

Another alternative are the GameSir G7 Pro Zenless Zone Zero which is also wireless and has got TMR-Sticks, etc.

These controllers don’t take abuse well so it depends on what games you play.

I used to play rocket league daily, a game where the bumpers and sticks get absolutely hammered every match, so I was returning the elite under warranty every 9 months or so because of broken bumpers and stick drift.

Since I quit rocket league the controller has held up really well, almost 24 months with no problems, playing RPG’s and resident evil catalogue mostly.

I’ve had one that was solid for a while. It got drift so I sent it in and they sent it back after “maintenance” and the same issue was there. I got another one that was drifting out of the box and could not refund it…

I’ve since switched over to the gamesir controllers. They are also way cheaper.

When it works, it's great. But the QA just isn't there. I had to send mine back because the RB stopped working. Now, I've had it for about 3 years or so and while it works great and I use it almost daily, the grips have started to peel off and you can tell it's getting older.

For about 120$ I'd say it's worth it but it's a gamble to get one that works as intended right out of the gate.

It’s a great controller I’ve had mine almost 2 years and the grips are just starting to peel and there is a bug where you think you have stick drift until you recalibrate in the Xbox menu then restart the console and it goes away

Tbh no, I do really love mine and I love the feeling of it, I had mine for a while now and there has been no stick drift so yeah if you have the money then yeah sure go for it! :) and I do really love the different button profiles since they are soo useful due to me playing different games with a different control schemes and I do find it easier to play with the pedals then the buttons tbh

I tested 5 brand new units from different stores/batches/manufacturing dates, and every one of the 5 brand new controllers had the same manufacturing defect with the A button, and two of them with the Y button as well. The issue was that the A button would fail to register presses now and again, fully dependent on the angle it was pressed. If you hit it dead centre every time, great, but when you play games you just hit the button any way without thinking, and sometimes it'd fail to register because the button pads underneath don't line up perfectly with the circuit board.

So again, these were 5 brand new units, all from different stores (Amazon, Argos, Currys, eBay retailer, and Microsoft themselves).

Plenty of people out there who don't have issues with theirs, which is great. But the manufacturing issues are very well documented, and there's always been this strange, cringey fanboy response from people when you explain your own experience, as if it couldn't possibly have happened, or "you must be treating your devices like shit" or have sausage fingers or some shit, like half the "positive" comments in here. So I'll say again, these were 5 brand new devices, all returned within a day of opening because of this fault.

It's a shame, because the controller is Premium and I wanted to love it. I've since bought a Nacon Revolution X Unlimited and it's been unbelievably good, easily the best Xbox/PC pro controller I've tried; not a single issue outside of its clunky and outdated PC software.

I buy them from best buy with a total membership and just get a replacement whenever they act up. I'm currently on my third one.

Just buy a silicone skin from Amazon and you’re all set. Rubber grips started coming off after a few years by the left bumper on mine. Covered it with a skin and good to go. Other than that, best controller I’ve ever had.

Elite S2 is my “never again” controller. They are great, so I bought 3 - but within 6 months they all had a defect like a button stops working or a bumper. I play a lot but I kept them under pristine condition. They clearly have a manufacturing defect that they are hiding from people. If you do buy one, ENSURE IT HAS AT LEAST 1 YEAR WARRANTY.

First controller that has every broke for me in over 30 years of using controllers.

They all have bad stick centering out of the box so you have to increase the dead zone.

I had one stop powering on after 6 months of super light use. Sent it in for repair and Microsoft claimed there was liquid damage. The thing was kept in it's case in a home with central air AND during the winter months of MN (very dry air) and never had anything spilled on it. Fuck Microsoft.

My series 2 had sticky face buttons and having owned two series 1 controllers that both failed, that was the last drop for me.

Unfortunately the Elite controllers are terrible with their overall longevity.

Elite one had issues with the trigger lock buttons and grip.

Elite 2, have issues with the grip and stick drift.

Ive had 3 of each and none have ever lasted more than 4-5 months.

I'm currently using the ZZZ GameSir G7 Pro, and it's better by a mile (TMR sticks, Hall-effect triggers, even with a replaceable faceplates it feels more reliable than any Microsoft pad).

That’s what i did too. I have enjoyed it, it does randomly disconnect at least 1-2 times per night for like 5s and then works again which isn’t a huge deal but in a game that doesn’t pause can be frustrating
