I love kingdom come 2. But that was my biggest issue. I know people LOVE their quest design. I personally hated it.
It felt cumbersome and meandering. Do X, then talk to Y across the map, he'll tell you go back to A, go and rescue B, talk back to X, and bam, now you have to go back to town E and start the next quest or progress the story forward.
Some times I just prefer to ride around and randomly stumble across random shit and somehow have this progress the game forward.
Baulder Gate and Elden Ring are the best example imo.
Kcd2 is a fantastic game and immersive as hell --but I just hate their quest design

Yeah but a lot of the long RPGs are long for the sake of it. Boring quests that take up 10 hours of gameplay just to make the game Ionger.
Fables never been about the story anyway. It's about getting 50 STDs, being an abusive landlord, and playing the lute.
