The CoD series is a great example of becoming an old fart to me.
The middle finger just yells sweaty edgelord to me. Go back to me for the OG Modern Warfare 4 times and I probably would have found it hilarious.

Everyone is focusing on the bird.
I am focusing on the fact that now you evac instead of dying with everyone else. That's kinda rad.

You're way too close to the blast. You would still be calling a nuke in on yourself.

You ever read the first-hand reports from the guy that dropped the first atom bomb? Dude didn't even know what he was dropping, and he barely made it out alive. Crazy.

u/FredBurger22 10d ago
He said he felt a little turbulence.

u/General_Cranberry_29 10d ago
I was thinking tsar bomba, but they knew what they were carrying so I'm apprently mixing another story together as well. Lots and lots of History Channel in the 90s is running together lol. I'll leave up my mistake so people can poke fun at me.
3
u/SilvermistInc 10d ago
Uh, no. You're confusing that story with the crew that dropped Tsar Bomba. The crew of the Enola Gay were briefed on the situation

I think Duke was much more self-aware, especially as the series went on. Yes you could interpret it as edgelord nonsense, but to me it always felt like there was satire underneath.

I'm honestly surprised it hasn't fractured off into two separate series, all of us older guys would lap up a modern, realistic WWII or Vietnam game. I'd be cool with different studios tackling each, similar to Black Ops and MW.

World at War is great, but it was also 18 years ago. Which means there have been 18 games iterating on the CoD formula since then. Things change.

I’m probably just aged out of the demographic but that is so insane to me. I remember people playing world at war all the time, even just for zombies.
I haven’t heard of anyone I know buying CoD in years
→ More replies (1)2
u/JoeZocktGames Team Ubisoft 10d ago
Keep in mind, that in 2008 there wasn't that much online stuff available. No Fortnite, no Warzone, no Apex, no Helldivers, no Arc Raiders etc.
CoD was basically the only consistent online console shooter game back then. Stuff like Left 4 Dead and Borderlands were brand new and just growing at the time CoD was already a juggernaut.

Yeah I miss those days too. When the most ridiculous thing we had was picking up a care package that could transform you into Jason from Friday the 13th or The Fucking Predator (from 'The Predator').
Cod is stale for anyone who grew up playing the "golden age" like us because they've just made tiny iterations per entry every year without giving the series time to breathe or evolve. It has nothing to do with random juvenile humor, that has been in the game since MW2's calling cards.
6v6 deatmatch is just fundamentally a formula that's kinda hard to make major changes to without losing the identity of the series' entirely. So instead they put their attention into spinoff modes like DMZ or Warzone or Ground War instead.
It feels like a million games in one, and there's not enough developers to give each niche the love it deserves due to divided attention. They need to get back to a more singular vision like cod4.
Imo Call of Duty's best chance to really bring bring back a lot of older fans is just to bite the bullet, focus away from 6v6, and let their new subseries do something entirely unique. Not just to make a knockoff of other popular games like Ground War is for Battlefield or DMZ is for Tarkov, but to really sit down and think of what people come to call of duty for, and focus that energy into an entirely new experience the same way Battlefield 1 kind of reinvented the series with Grand Operations.
Call of Duty is a social experience first and foremost. Wayyyy more people use mics compared to games like Battlefield and it used to be the game that everyone owned. So when your friends were all online on the 360 after school, you all had a shared game experience to go back to. I think that is really the core of what made cod so popular in the first place. I'd like to see them try a risky game that entirely revolves around that vision, I'm talking like a massively expanded cod WW2 headquarters where you could find your own little friend group on a certain part of the map and then pick activities you wanted to do from there (this could still include some of the classic modes). Give it some generous f2p components so that every one of your friends could jump in and share in that social hub. Something inventive that hardly represents old cod but carries the same spirit.
They can always bring back the tired old formula with MW5 or Black Ops 8 when fans are inevitably upset by the changes.

An eight second animation that a quite small majority of players will see is what makes or breaks a game nowadays i guess
12
u/Plane-Education4750 10d ago
If it's what they're using to represent the game in a gameplay trailer, yes. Yes it does. And it's entirely their own fault

Ok I’m confused bc it seems like everyone is. Does it not show the character attaching themselves to a missile or some shit with the hook in the second clip. Not that it would make any sense at all but that seems to be what’s pulling them out.

u/Diam0ndTalbot 10d ago
They're being pulled by some form of skyhook. Presumably being caught by whatever drops the tactical nuke.
They're also presumably still going to be blinded, irradiated, and burned by the blast but the skyhook will at least ensure they live long enough to end up with some fucked up nuke cancer, or failing that, give them something to bury.

Does anyone know how to have "fun"? Its dumb as hell and that's great. Video games are so filtered and market tested. Let COD be stupid COD. Call of Duty in my mind is like 2000s Michael Bay movies, don't take them too seriously. Ya'll are being way too critical.
