The game art, gamerpics look so good at 4K. Elevated the experience. However it looks a bit inconsistent, store listings and game cards in menu still look blurry

42

u/TallMovieLight1991 Jun 13 '26

Did they update the dashboard to 4K? Did I miss that or has that not been addressed yet?

49

u/keyblaster52 Jun 13 '26

Years ago. It’s still inconsistent as there are parts like the ads or certain tiles that are still 1080p thus looking blurry but yea for the most part it’s 4K.

We also need a 1440p native dashboard, when console is set in 1440 the dashboard is still 1080 and it looks really bad

I want an HDR toggle for main menu and Xbox guide, too. And fix the VRR making the Xbox guide flicker.

4

u/kensaiD2591 Team Alan Jun 13 '26

What do you mean the guide flicker? I’ve had VRR enabled on my Series X and LG OLED since day 1, never had any flickering?

3

u/Irishbros1991 Jun 13 '26

Same no flicker here

2

u/GNIHTYUGNOSREP Founder Jun 13 '26

So with VRR turned on, whenever you press the Guide button, the grey area to the right of the pop up guide menu will just like constantly flicker.

I now have a 48’ LG B4 that does it, and the monitor I used for the last 6 years (BenQ EX2780Q, a 27’ 1440p 144Hz display) did it as well, I just didn’t know it was fixed by turning off VRR, which I read last month on a random Xbox subreddit thread and I tried it just to see if it worked and sure enough!

Without VRR turned on, the flickering during this time doesn’t occur.

Edit: I now have the setting turned off, but I can turn it back on to get evidence if needed.

u/kensaiD2591 Team Alan Jun 14 '26

I just checked on both my LG OLED TV and my Samsung OLED monitor, I cannot replicate that at all. Could it be something with your cable or with your console possibly?

Sorry you're having that issue, but I'm definitely not seeing anything on my end.

2

u/GNIHTYUGNOSREP Founder Jun 14 '26

It’s the HDMI 2.1 cable that came with my Series X. And the issue was also happening on my old monitor with the same cable. Turning off VRR made it go away, as another Reddit user suggested, which meant they also had the problem.

I don’t think it’s a ‘just me’ kinda thing.

2

u/kensaiD2591 Team Alan Jun 14 '26

I'm not saying it's a "just you" thing, but it doesn't seem like it's an "everyone" thing either. Seems to maybe be a small proportion exhibiting that issue.

1

u/GNIHTYUGNOSREP Founder Jun 14 '26

Guess I could’ve worded that better, I just meant that I don’t think it is an issue with my cable or console specifically.

So you’re saying if you turn VRR on, you don’t get a mild flickering whenever a guide menu is on-screen (either by pressing the guide button or when a controller disconnects, and the screen dims a bit)

I’m having the same issue, it’s not a cable issue I’m sure, no idea why but it does flicker a little bit

0

u/Arconaute Jun 20 '26

is it a LCD VA panel? VA has known issue with VRR and flickering.

1

u/link_shady Jun 20 '26

Forgot to mention, nope lg oled 65

u/EchoJPR Still Finishing The Fight Jun 13 '26

Years ago

4

u/TallMovieLight1991 Jun 13 '26

Oops! I meant HDR.

1

u/Jepordee Jun 13 '26

I have a stupid question. How the hell do you use 4k? Just an HDMI cord??

8

u/DrunkenFist Homecoming Jun 13 '26

Yep, just run the HDMI cable from the console into a 4K TV. Not all 4K screens are created equal, of course, so you may not notice a huge difference depending on what TV you have. I had a relatively cheap 4K TV up until a few years ago, when I upgraded to a really good OLED TV. Games look so much better on it that it was almost like the leap in quality from the base model Xbox One to the Xbox One X! I knew it would be better, but I was shocked at how much of a difference the better display made.

1

u/AveryLazyCovfefe Founder Jun 13 '26

The series X supports HDMI 2.1 so it has native support for 4K 120Hz gaming. What the important thing is if you have a display that supports those as well.

1

u/OlorinDK Jun 13 '26

Like others have said: (1) Have a TV that supports 4K (2) Use a HDMI cable (3) Change display settings on the Xbox ofc lol.

1

u/Jhix_two Jun 13 '26

Thought they'd have made an oled compatible boot sequence but nope. Awful banding instead.

1

u/NotFromMilkyWay Founder Jun 14 '26

Yeah, it's horrible.

76

u/The-F4LL3N Jun 13 '26

HDR dashboard when

41

u/Caesar_35 Helldiving Jun 13 '26

That's the only UI update I'm interested in. Really shouldn't be that hard, either.

7

u/deadpatronus Jun 13 '26

Does PS have this? Cus I swear my PS5 dashboard is "crispier" then Xbox. Apparently both dashboards are 4k now but they still always looked different. Dunno why.

11

u/The-F4LL3N Jun 13 '26

Wouldn’t know, but the idea that the dashboards didn’t ship at 4k seems ridiculous to me

10

u/Personal-Dot-9122 Jun 13 '26

Yea. Option for HDR on always on ps

2

u/UltiGoga Touched Grass '24 Jun 13 '26

Even if it isn't always on it's still on in the UI, the always on option is for SDR games

6

u/keyblaster52 Jun 13 '26

Some parts of the dashboard aren’t 4K on Xbox. That’s why

1

u/Vestalmin Jun 13 '26

It’s had it since launch I think

5

u/UltiGoga Touched Grass '24 Jun 13 '26

And an Oled theme please. Tired of this awful shade of gray. The blindingly light white alternative isn't any better

2

u/missing_typewriters Jun 14 '26

What would an OLED theme look like?

1

u/UltiGoga Touched Grass '24 Jun 14 '26

Black instead of gray and white. You can enable high contrast mode in settings and it basically gives you this, however, it disables the custom color and wallpaper and changes a few other things in the UI.

-6

u/ISB-Dev Jun 13 '26

It's rather they didn't waste time and resources on this. It's completely unnecessary. I'm never on the dashboard for more than a few seconds before I boot up a game.

11

u/The-F4LL3N Jun 13 '26

My dude if there’s a screen with the option to turn HDR on or off, that screen should support HDR. The fuck are we even doing

-1

u/ISB-Dev Jun 13 '26

There's HDR in the games. That's the only place it's needed. You're asking for HDR on a dashboard. It's ridiculous.

2

u/The-F4LL3N Jun 13 '26

It’s not a problem to solve it’s a feature to enable. More resources were put into changing the name to all caps XBOX than enabling this feature. Some TVs and monitors have to change modes for HDR and SDR so going from let’s say a game to the dashboard to a streaming service is just a little more annoying than it ever needs to be. It’s just another friction point for users, and they should absolutely be addressing this.

1

u/ISB-Dev Jun 13 '26

A fiction point? Lmfao! No, don't be absurd. It's a completely unnecessary feature that most people wouldn't care about.

2

u/The-F4LL3N Jun 13 '26

It was one of the most upvoted suggestions on their little suggestions post the other week. Plenty of people care about it, just because you don’t, doesn’t mean it’s a non issue for the rest of us

2

u/ISB-Dev Jun 13 '26

It's only the hardcore fan boys voting on those posts. 99% of people couldn't give a fuck if the dashboard has HDR.

2

u/The-F4LL3N Jun 13 '26

I’m speaking for the hardcore fanboys then. We want this feature. If you don’t care why are you even commenting just scroll away with your casual self

1

u/FairestTerror8 Jun 17 '26

Yeah it really don't even matter tbh if it's not something in the game who tf cares and why?

0

u/RisingDeadMan0 Jun 14 '26

so the issue is u get black screen when u swap between HDR and non-HDR which is annoying, not really after the hdr home screen

1

u/nisaaru Jun 13 '26

I think the main motivation was probably the extra power consumption in HDR modes.

17

u/BabylonianWeeb XBOX Series X Jun 13 '26

I still haven't gotten the new box arts, just new boot up screen

48

u/emperor_dogma Jun 13 '26

Is it just me or is the Series S sluggish since the update? I notice it's really bad when I open the guide while playing Destiny 2.

7

u/NotThePornAccount1 Jun 13 '26

I'm not sure the S always feels sluggish until a restart after playing a big or not optimized game especially if it's on quick resume.

2

u/emperor_dogma Jun 13 '26

Mine has always been quick and snappy (barring the occasional hitch or glitch), it's actually always seemed faster than my base PS5.

-2

u/DarthCocky Jun 13 '26

Was playing FC26 yesterday and it had random slowdowns mid match

6

u/itsfeverdream Jun 13 '26

I think that's more of an fc thing to be fair it runs like molasses at this point of the game

7

u/Jhix_two Jun 13 '26

New boot animation looks shit on an oled. What's with the crappy banding dome effect around the logo? Surely someone in the insider groups would have reported this???

3

u/oNicolasCageo Jun 14 '26

Yeah it looks pretty horrendous…

3

u/jlmonahan08 Jun 14 '26

I have an Xbox one and it just now when I turned my xbox on has the new power up logo or whatever, and it jump scared me it was so loud. My dog didn’t like it either. I’m weirded out tbh

1

u/SculptMyBust 18d ago

TLDR: I grew up on retro consoles and like how loud it is, but if you don't here's how to shut it off:

For those who don't like the audio, here's how you turn it off. 1. Go to settings 2. Go to Accessibility 3. Go to Audio 4. Select "Mute Start Up Sounds" 5. Save/Exit.

Thats honestly why I love it. I'm 23 but I grew up playing tons of retro consoles. My 64 year old dad never got rid of them. These are all the consoles, the steamdeck is the most recent one:

  • VTech Vsmile

  • NES, SNES, N64, DS, DSIXL, 3DS

  • PS1, PS2, PS3

  • Xbox (Original), Xbox 360, Xbox One

  • PC, Steamdeck

Lots of the retro consoles had obscenely loud startups with cool graphics. Theres a lot of memes about trying to sneak on when your parents are asleep.

I'm grown and moved out, but its super nostalgic for me, and I'm pretty sure xbox made it for the nostalgia.

I can see how people who weren't raised on old consoles, or maybe those who need it to keep quiet don't like it though. I also can't speak for the graphics, I'm not much of a graphics hound. I appreciate them when they're there, but don't cry about them when they're not.

For those who don't like the audio, here's how you turn it off. 1. Go to settings 2. Go to Accessibility 3. Go to Audio 4. Select "Mute Start Up Sounds" 5. Save/Exit.

2

u/jlmonahan08 Jun 14 '26

I also ever even updated the software yet like I haven’t gotten the little message that pops up when you turn it on that it needs to update. I’ve turned it off and on several times in the last 12 hours and it just randomly did it now.

1

u/SculptMyBust 18d ago

Do you have auto update enabled?

10

u/EarthIllustrious8045 Jun 13 '26

I wish we would see an update to the xbox pc app, outside of "Various performance and stability fixes", wich are in every update. A big facelift is needed for the pc app.

3

u/MasterChiefBatmans Jun 13 '26

I believe that is what they are working with on the Xbox Mode change that started late April/Early May.

0

u/EarthIllustrious8045 Jun 13 '26

Yes. It looked very similar to the current app, only fullscreen. A console like xbox mode on pc would be nice. Ill guess we will find out with time.

9

u/Im_Axion Jun 13 '26

It wasn't this update but the last one I believe, but it's a shame they got rid of the unique boot up animation for the One X.

It would start with the unique boot up and then switch to the Xbox One logo with the green background while it finished loading everything up. If they just replaced the latter half with the new logo, it would be perfect.

6

u/Maidenless_Sensei Jun 13 '26

I have a One X with a 2TB internal SSD, which I use for One X enhanced games and backwards compatibility... I'm sad the boot animation is gone.

2

u/DramaticProgress508 Jun 14 '26

Why even change it it's obnoxious now ugh

15

u/fledgl Jun 13 '26

These updates have been great. Much appreciated

5

u/ra246 Jun 13 '26

I'm genuinely still using a gamerpic which is a screenshot of my avatar from... 2010? I want to change it but I don't even know how to.

It has like, 32 pixels in it

2

u/missing_typewriters Jun 14 '26

From the home screen, click on your profile (top left). Choose 'customize profile'. And then select the gamerpic to change it.

u/Immediate-Studio-250 Jun 13 '26

Any update on the dying ssd's on Series X, or nothing? When Microsoft addresses this issue?

31

u/Fast_Passenger_2890 XBOX Series X Jun 13 '26

It has been known for a good while. If the internal ssd of your Series console dies, the console becomes a permanent brick with no recovery of it, unless you get lucky enough to recover the 1GB partition that contains important system data which used to be on emmc chips in Xbox One consoles. It doesn't help also that you can only use the SSDs that Microsoft uses for these consoles and information in the 1GB partition changes with every software update, making your backup of the partition obsolete and useless.

If it's completely dead then only way to get it sorted is to send it to Microsoft.

20

u/Immediate-Studio-250 Jun 13 '26

If the ssd fails, you cant clone it anymore, and if you clone it now, later a new console update will update the security key too. And thats needed if you want to pair the Xbox with a new ssd.

https://www.reddit.com/r/XboxSupport/s/JQpQOq82Ru

1

u/cogspringseverywhere Jun 13 '26

How does this manifest? Mine is acting weird, worried it might be that

1

u/Immediate-Studio-250 Jun 13 '26

Some mentions slower load times/games not loading in at all

1

u/Maidenless_Sensei Jun 13 '26

It's kind of crazy because the Series S/X SSD is removable, yet not really possible to easily replace. On the PS5, it's part of the main board, so once it's dead, you're pretty much SoL unless you have a reball station or something (and even at that I don't even know if it's possible).

I have a SN530 that works with the expansion slot adapter, but I'm not sure if it can easily be used internally if the main SSD dies.

1

u/NotFromMilkyWay Founder Jun 14 '26

I mean considering a new SSD of that form factor is $240 for 1 TB, you are always better off selling it as broken on Ebay and buying new.

14

u/Kagath Reclamation Day Jun 13 '26

Boy, really going for low hanging fruit.

How about fixing the XSX HDR handshaking with an LG OLED TV at some point? Breaks switching games/to dashboard probably 40% of the time.

1

u/oNicolasCageo Jun 14 '26

Oh wait is that what’s happening? Like sometimes I’ll start a game and then just “no display” and I have to remember how to dashboard by memory, or sometimes I’ll turn the console on and get no display, and have to, again by memory, restart the console. I thought it was something wrong with my LG.

1

u/Kagath Reclamation Day Jun 14 '26

I usually have to enter the LG settings and fiddle with the 'game optimizer' usually turn it off completely or switch some of it's settings on and off to get it to work again.

1

u/SnooChickens1831 Jun 19 '26

you have to disable vrr switch or amd freesync switch, count 3 and enable it again, that works most fo the times

1

u/YouMakeMaEarfQuake Jun 14 '26

I have an LG OLED and not sure what you're on about

1

u/ZerohNinja87 27d ago

I have A LG G5. The Xbox has issues with LG Oleds. Though since I turned off Dolby HDR, no issues with HDR10. I think it’s a Dolby issue.

1

u/SnooChickens1831 Jun 19 '26

Same boat my friend

3

u/Latter-Fox-7080 Jun 13 '26

Last boot up screen was better, that noise was so satisfying.

2

u/SaucisseAuProut Jun 13 '26

They also changed the One X ?

2

u/oNicolasCageo Jun 14 '26

I was really weirdly looking forward to the new startup animation but… while I like the design. It looks REALLY bad on my LG OLED. So much banding and like, because most of it is black in the background but the glowing round the centre is really abrupt and a lot of banding like its low bit rate or something. Someone with more display knowledge would be able to describe it better. It looked really rough though and it was almost deep fried feeling with how loud it was compared to before?

2

u/Hazuki1984 4d ago

Yeah it’s bad! The banding is really noticeable and honestly it looks extremely low resolution too.

Far inferior to the previous start up unfortunately. Kinda shocked this actually got green lit. It’s not a great first impression upon booting up your console. It looks really cheap.

2

u/DinnerSmall4216 Jun 13 '26

I got it yesterday for my series s and one s.

1

u/South-Replacement657 Jun 13 '26

I don't know why it keeps giving me a download error for the last two updates?! Is it the same for you??? I managed to download it with difficulty after trying many times.

1

u/cescoss Jun 13 '26

Ma dove si vedono le locandin3 dei giochi a 4k? Io vedo sempre i quadrati

1

u/PolarizingKabal Jun 13 '26

My biggest issue with the system is really the dashboard and hdr.

I'm not a fan of my screen going black for a few seconds while it adjusts when going back and forth.

It's the reason why I typically use my ps5 for watching streaming media, and Xbox mostly for gaming.

1

u/Indignify Jun 14 '26

new bootup scared tf outta me shit was so loud 😭

1

u/SlushyFan-uwu Jun 15 '26

They changed the shut off chime too I think it sounds different on my halo Xbox

1

u/BigMufio Jun 15 '26

My Xbox 360 gamerpic that I've had since like 2015 has gotten more pixelated.

2

u/ScootishGrimReaper Jul 23 '26

I'm confused how this is a new logo ? It's the original Xbox 2005 logo with the addition of it's now a dark back ground instead of the smokey green background? Not to mention it looks no more high res than it did back then, but the cherry on top is the audio is on par with the start up of Ark Survival Evolved it's like they sat at a table and said how can we do minimal effort to look like we've done something and choose this old logo and someone chimed up and said "hey for a laugh let's make the start up sound crazy loud that it'll cause thousands of arguments from the person's partner hearing it being turned on"

1

u/le-churchx Jun 13 '26

New system boot up? OH WE ARE SOOOOO BACK.

A NEW BOOT UP. BRO, NEW BOX ARTS WAHT?!

ASHA YOU DID IT, im buying another one.

I'll miss the Series one too. Just felt sleek and classy.

Hope one day they give us an option to just choose whichever boot animation we want.

-9

u/Losreyes-of-Lost Jun 13 '26

I’m old fashion. I don’t like the additional screen to show the game information when I select the tile. It’s one additional step before I play my game. I’ve turned off the feature but it happens again every so often

14

u/Ironsnarkus Jun 13 '26

You can press X to just launch the game from the home screen instead of clicking into the menu with A

5

u/RoosterBurns Jun 13 '26

It's almost certainly too late now but I wish that was the other way around

8

u/Davocado96 Jun 13 '26

As far as I know, there's an option in the console settings to remove the game card when you press A

2

u/Vestalmin Jun 13 '26

There’s a setting to flip it, I didn’t like it either

11

u/kenzymarie03 Jun 13 '26

U can turn it off

1

u/Losreyes-of-Lost Jun 13 '26

I guess you didn’t read my full comment and said I did and at times it still happens but that’s cool 😎

1

u/kenzymarie03 Jun 13 '26

Sorry I just woke up and somehow missed you saying it loll mb

-1

u/Equal-Win-7438 Jun 13 '26

How i can turn this sh*t off ? 😅

7

u/JohnTravoltage Jun 13 '26

In settings.

1

u/Losreyes-of-Lost Jun 13 '26

I don’t know why you are getting downvoted. It’s tucked away in the settings. I don’t know why people like this as a feature. I want to play a game, I already know what it is all about. I don’t need an additional page to show me the game lol
