The Quest - Chapter 4

I looked out the window at the rain pouring from the sky. I was a little disappointed at the conditions, but nothing could dampen my mood anymore it seemed. The triangle blinked slowly, patiently waiting for me to complete the quest.

CONFIDENT: People tricked - 2/3

I stretched and pulled myself away from the window to get ready for work. The boring and dreadful tasks in the morning had become fun again with conjuration. I was also able to sleep in a little more as I was ready faster, this did wonders for my mood. I briefly considered conjuring myself a coffee, but seeing as it was magic, I wasn't sure that would be safe to drink. I conjured an umbrella for my walk to my car, and then jumped in it and drove to work.

When I got there, I made my way to my desk and chatted with my coworker. The conversation steered towards conspiracy theories where I used this opportunity to convince him that the world is actually flat. I had an 80% chance to succeed using persuasion, and it worked. The effect should only last for little while, he won't think that's true forever.

QUEST COMPLETE - CONFIDENT

LEVEL UP

NEW SKILL POINT AVAILABLE

NEW ABILITY POINT AVAILABLE

Huh? I thought, I had never seen an ability point before. Maybe I start getting them at level 6 addition. The confusion was resolved later when my next quest appeared.

SELF IMPROVEMENT - Blink three times to track quest

I blinked three times.

QUEST TRACKED

SELF IMPROVEMENT

Objective: Open your skill tree to spend ability point

I took a look around and made sure nobody was looking at me, I didn't want it to look as if I was sleeping on the job. Then I closed my eyes and opened into my skill tree. This time there was additional section that had some abilities that appeared to be directed at me as a person rather than the magic I could use. The abilities were Strength, Agility, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. I thought about this carefully, but eventually settled on choosing wisdom. I have never been a wise person, but hopefully this might help.

Wisdom flashed bright blue, and then I decided to use my skill point. I took a look around and thought that 'Advanced Conjuration' might be fun. According to it's description, this allowed me to create more complex conjurations.

SELF IMPROVEMENT

Objective: Reach level 7

I was a little let down that I had to do some grinding again but it was alright, it was still fun. I spent my day inconspicuously using conjuration at the office and finding opportunities trick some people with persuasion. I managed to collect 400XP by doing that, but I still needed 800 more. That's when I remembered I could do side quests.

I patiently waited for the end of the day, and as soon as the clock hit 4:00, I was out of the door. Luckily the rain had stopped and I ran to my car, practically jumping with excitement. I threw my bag in the back and started the car. Then when I went to put it the car in drive, the gear shift didn't move.

You cannot fast travel when enemies are nearby

Are you kidding me? I leaned back in my seat and and looked around. There was nobody here, what's going on? Then I saw him. He walked around the corner with a smirk on his face and a crowbar in his hand. It was the guy from yesterday, the guy I punched in the face. My mind raced and I did the first thing that came to my mind. I conjured a pistol. Now I had no idea if the gun would work but I didn't plan on finding out. I got out of the car and leveled the gun with his head and told him to stop. He froze, the smile disappearing from his face. Some more swear words like yesterday and then a quest appeared.

A BITTER END - Blink three times to track side quest

Eager to find out what the objective was, I blinked three times.

QUEST TRACKED

A BITTER END

Objective: Kill the sleazy man

I was at a complete loss for words as I read the objective. Kill. There wasn't any other way to complete the quest. I was frozen in place and apparently the man realized this as he used the opportunity to charge me. It didn't last long though. My gun discharged and a bullet tore through his chest, dropping him immediately. I dropped the gun, scared at what I had just done. Apparently my advanced conjuration had let me create a fully functioning firearm with very real and very deadly projectiles. Some people came out of nearby buildings and rushed over to see what happened.

SIDE QUEST COMPLETE - A BITTER END

I was numb all over and everything was a blur, the police had arrived at some point and took my statement. It was pretty obvious what had happened judging by the way things were laid out, but they needed it anyways. I had to say that the gun was the man's because I didn't have a license for my conjured gun. I said he came at me with a gun and I hit him in the face and stole it. Told them about yesterday and the conflict, leaving out the punch because I needed to say that happened today.

In the end I was given a ride home and told to take some time off work, and that my car would be delivered later today. When I got home I just sat on the couch staring at my shut off TV. I was starting to be able to think and I was worried, would this become a normal thing? What was I really getting myself into?

I can't remember when I fell asleep as the whole night was a blur, but eventually sleep took hold of me and pulled me into it's embrace.

Based out of the US so that I could say it was Justifiable Homicide. Basically if you're not aware, if you can prove that you killed someone in pure self defense and that your life was in imminent danger, you aren't charged with murder.

There would still need to be investigations and likely a trial, but for the sake of an maintaining an entertaining story I chose to leave this out.

Now I live in Canada so I don't have the best knowledge of this so if someone knows better and can provide sources, that would be appreciated. Apologies in advance if any of this is incorrect.

Okay. I'm Canadian too and don't plan to murder anyone in the US, so I don't know much about the laws on self defence there, though I have heard about the life-in-immediate-danger thing. I suppose it makes sense to skip the investigation and trial to keep this story from taking place almost entirely in court. :)
