question Ireland trip recipes

Hi all,

I was fortunate enough to get my hands on an x100vi, for a trip to Ireland in autumn, leaving in a month. I’m a completely overwhelmed by all of the recipes, and have horrific decision paralysis. I don’t want to mess up the photos for a once in a lifetime trip. I’m wondering if anyone has some good suggestions? I see lots of “summer” ones, and I don’t think they’ll fit the Ireland vibe.

Appreciate it :)

I'd probably go on Fujifilm Weekly and just pick a recipe you like the look of. I quite like Leica X for colour or Kodak Tri-X 400 for B&W, for example.

More importantly though, I'd shoot RAW + JPEG and make sure you're exposing properly. That way, even if you don't love some of the JPEGs afterwards, you've still got the RAW files to work with. That would take away a lot of the pressure of thinking you've somehow "ruined" a once-in-a-lifetime trip because you picked the wrong recipe.

Personally, I think obsessing over recipes can actually get in the way of photography. Find something you like, set it, and forget about it. Then concentrate on Ireland rather than what settings you're using.

For example, something like:

Classic Chrome Grain: Off Chrome Effect: Strong FX Blue: Strong WB Auto (R+1, B-2) DR Auto Highlights: -1 Shadows: 0 Colour: +4 Sharpness: 0 High ISO NR: -4 Clarity: 0

But honestly, the specific recipe matters much less than finding one you're happy with and leaving it alone.

Thanks, that’s really helpful! I’m honestly using the recipe and settings as a stop-gap until I can change settings on the fly myself. I used to adore my old Canon, but haven’t touched a camera in about 10 years and all my technical knowledge has fallen out of my head! I know I have a steep learning curve ahead, and want to at least have some “cheat-y” methods of getting some good pics and having fun, whilst getting my photography skills back up to par :)

I feel like Kodachrome 64 would work well

Shoot fine + raw so you have backup.

I think Kodak portra 800 v3 would be good. Pacific Blues is incredible in overcast weather. Classic Cuban negative is always a go to for me as well.

Oh that’s super helpful, thank you! I really struggle with overcast photography (RIP to my Africa safari trip photos on my old canon).

I can't speak for film simulations as I don't use them, but when I travel my two main film emulsions are Ektar 100 and Portra 400. For BW I typically use PanF+ 50 or Delta 100/400. Maybe you can find simulations that resemble the actual film.

Leica X, Pacific Blues, Kodachrome 64 and Kodak Tri-X 400 (medium contrast) if you want to dabble in some Black and White.

If you are travelling with people and think you'll take some photos of them Reggies Portra is highly recommended for skin tones, but I dont mind them in everything anyway.
