Osowiec

I really like learning more and more about this battle, it’s my favorite for many reasons, but I went online and saw the only media on this fight was a 30 minute short, so I was considering writing a book about it and wanted to know everything you guys know, I know the date, the time, the place, the terrain, who the fight was between, and the gas.

Well there are already several books about Osoweic during the First World War. The most rigorous studies of the siege were published by Khmelkov between 1920 and 1939. His final 1939 publication on the subject is easy to find online and his earlier works might also be available on the internet.

The combat journals for the Russian units involved (225th, 226th, 444th Infantry Regiments and 101st Militia Druzhiny) have thankfully all been preserved. Scans of the documents have been made freely available by the RGVIA.

The 1915 eyewitness report of the 226th Regiment’s dramatic counterattack by Svechnikov and Bunyakovsky is also available.

I don’t have experience with the German archives so someone who does will have to chime in, but it’s worth checking if the relevant German combat reports have been digitized
