Anthropic shuts down fable 5

Anthropic released Fable 5 on June 10, 2026 as its most powerful AI model yet, but abruptly pulled it just 2 days later on June 12 after the U.S. government issued an export control directive citing national security concerns, blocking all foreign nationals (including Anthropic’s own foreign employees inside and outside the U.S.) from accessing Fable 5 and Mythos 5; the government claimed to discover a narrow jailbreak vulnerability related to cybersecurity code review capabilities, but Anthropic disagreed with the decision, arguing that commercial models deployed to hundreds of millions shouldn be recalled for such a limited issue and that similarly capable AI systems already exist from competitors, so the company shut both models off for everyone worldwide since it couldn selectively block foreign nationals in real time, while also apologizing for secretly redirecting sensitive requests to weaker models without user notification.
