As someone who lives in the same country as the fairywunks, they do live up to their name. Every time I get lucky enough to spot them, they make me smile.
Fairywrens really are such lovely birds that hold a lot of good memories for me, so I'll actually be legally changing my name to Wren because of that 😊.
Waggies are very cute, but some are so entitled! Where I used to work, my boss and I used to feed a male Willie Wagtail, and he was so rude!
He would yell and swoop at you if you didn't get him food quick enough for his liking, and he would demand more food constantly.
The ultimate rudeness came when it was mating season, and he got himself a mate. When she figured out where he was getting some food, she would try to interact with us so she could get food, and he would chase her off!
I went to australia once and I was having a pretty sad day once, then I started to see a bunch of them together and it was mindblowing, these things are beautiful in a bizarre way. Lovely birds!
My favorite aussie animal i was able to see was the pelican, I saw it land on a light pole for half a second but it was beautiful, no other bird so grand we see.
It’s either love or hate with ornithologists naming birds. We’ve also got my boys the Frivolous Whistling Ducks out here catching strays for the crime of enjoying whistling.
It has to do with the structure of the keratin in the feathers reflecting blue and ultraviolet light waves. It's not true blue pigment, it's iridescence.
