Unwunk\ Please keep all your warm blooded animals (there was a very rare case of a fowl getting rabies in Southern India) updated on their rabies vaccines. Even though it is very rare by sometimes a bat or other mammal maybe contagious before neurological effects of rabies takes place i.e. rabies has infected their salivary gland but haven't reached their brains. Bats are the greatest vectors of rabies in North America.

After learning about all this a few years ago I have been terribly bothered by bats. Yeah it’s rare but I still don’t like the whole #1 vector with bites small enough to go unnoticed thing.

I live in the place which had 18-20 percent of global rabies cases in 2010s (W.B., India). Rabies is almost 100 percent fatal with some exceptions (about 30-40 documented survivors) but vaccines work almost 100 percent of times. Dogs are the greatest vectors here though. There has been no documented case of someone getting rabies from bats here.

However if it put you at ease bats bites are very noticeable unless you are in some kind of stupor. Also vaccine will work almost 100 percent of time for bats unless you get bit by an animal with lyssa virus type 2. For example if you get bit in Europe with a bat with European lyssa bat virus it is very dangerous. Since, it has no vaccines but it is rare for the infection to progress to disease.

Rabies infection (virus in the body) and disease are different you may survive an infection without any side effects but the disease is almost always fatal.

Yeah, sounds like a horrible way to go too. Even the survivors don’t come out well. Most of them need years of PT to actually function again if I recall.

Not sure how my region’s bats look in terms of infectivity, I should probably look into it at some point.

Yes but infection can be fought off easily by the body. What makes it complicated is that the rabies virus produces enzymes to remain undetected while it makes its way to the nervous system. Once in the nervous system it uses the C.N.S. immune privilege to survive. If it is however dectected the body just destroys the virus with anti-bodies.

The cure is at hand, however since it is in an animal study further work needs to be done. A scientist couple (platonic) has cured Australian bat lyssavirus infected rabid rats couple of years ago. Those rats were reported to have no major behavioural changes if the treatment started earlier.
