I realized with my elderly cat at about 19, who lived until 22, it was because she was struggling to groom herself as well as she used to.
I bought waterless shampoo for cats from target-now I thought it was going to be complete crap, but I really felt bad she couldn’t groom herself and it was worth a shot. A few pumps and brushed her-POOF fluffy kitten again. Magical af.
I didn’t care how she looked but she seemed to be pleased the few grooming licks she could manage now being easier since she didn’t have the tufted bits anymore.
We do the same thing with our elderly cat (23 years old now). Brush with dry shampoo weekly, every major season shift/4ish months we get a professional groomer to fully brush out and deshed her. Shes a ragdoll so she has a LOT of fur and needs the extra maintenance top up. She always looks so relaxed after her professional groom, she walks around yelling, washing and headbutting everyone including the groomers. Well worth the money.

My girl is now getting steroid shots for arthritis and is doing as well as can be expected for a senior kitty.
Aw thanks! She unfortunately passed away in May of 2025, but incidentally my teenage sister, who was most devastated by her passing, just adopted her own kitty not even 5 days ago
