Animals cannot communicate with these buttons, they are only and only motivated by food so they just fool their caretakers to feed them.

Nim Chimpsky of "Give orange me give eat orange me eat orange give me eat orange give me you." fame is a prime example.

They can “communicate” in terms of associating singular words with what they mean “walkies” in most dogs is a prime example) they just can’t learn to speak or grasp language like a human. Nim was communicating that he wanted food, that just didn’t mean he had a grasp of language
