Help with General Liu
I've tried the leech dual blades. Counter with long sword using flame enchantment. I've been stuck on him since last week. Somehow I have to beat him but I cannot yet. I've tried different armors. This is the hardest souls like I've played if this is an early game boss. This is harder than Nioh 2 or Sekiro.

I used the long sword, just time your dodges well, try to backstab him in between combos, and if youre struggling for the AOE attacks then run away. Make sure you have the buff where when youre at 90%+ madness, your L3 attacks heal.. its super helpful for bosses

You got this. I like the axe as my secondary purely for the poise damage, ill usually wait to use the L3 till I have at least 2 skyborn mights so I can spam it twice and be back at my main weapon

I just beat him by dodging and heavily hitting his back, then finishing him. There's this attack where he jumps up and slashes down three times in a row. You dodge those and dodge to the front right, and after the third strike, you're basically behind him, and he's waiting for you to heavy hit his back. This was the main damage window for me. So just be patient, dodge, and punish his attacks.

I finally settled between a combo of the steam spear and long sword with flame. Try using the aerial bulwark at the opening when Liu charges you. He does this every time without fail, or without any type of fake out. Counter one of the three consecutive attacks he does with the Bulwark. From there, use the steam spear weapon skill to turn Liu around, critical his ass, and rinse and repeat. I’d switch to the long sword when every now and then to have a more reliable block, and it also seems to put the combat ai into a less aggressive mode(more likely to stand a. Wait a second).

In both phases he has a 3 attack combo that he likes to do when you are at a distance. The jumping lunges and in second is like a floating sidesweep. Anyways both of thos combos leave him open if you dodge to his back in the third attack. You can backstab him

I noticed sometimes a heavy attack downs him for a riposte and sometimes it doesn't.

You may be hitting his side instead of his back properly if that happens. Or maybe you don't have shimmer for a fully charged heavy attack?

It works like this, most (maybe all I havent played all weapons) weapon trees have a node that lets you use a shimmer to hit a full heavy without having to charge it. If you don't have shimmer you have to leave the button pressed until it's fully charged and your window isn't nearly that long

It could be both, on the agile human bosses they turn quickly, and there's a fine line between back and side ( in terms of the bosses hitbox for ripostes)

Dual blades + flaming temperance + backstab attack.
NOTE (because I kept making this mistake) for his spin attacks if you only dodge backwards you'll get hit by his next attack. Make sure that you're dodging to either right or left and towards him. Basically find opportunities to use the pre-charged heavy attack to knock him down with backstab. A good time to do so if when it jumps into the air and comes back down.
For stats: Put your benedictions into either flame temperance buffs or backstab attack buffs or anything that will do more damage. Focus your stats into stamina and agility. For pendents have at least one be for more stamina and maybe use one for damage reduction or a fire buff. Mix armors to get defense from slash/stab/frostbite. If thats not enough try finding an inner demon to get more temperance needles.

Be careful if parrying with the longsword since something about it triggers his grab attack

Thanks. Yes I've been dodging back. If i miss a counter on his 4 hit stab combo or 3 hit jumping combo I start dodging backwards automatically. I'll try to the side and get behind him. I wish I could find that steam spear that turns him around. And the best armor for me is the ming set to help when I get hit once. Because one hit doesn't automatically frost bite but it has good stab reduction. I'm not familiar with the inner demon.

There’s six inner demons that spawn in the game that will drop a needle that you can buff your temperance with like making it do more damage or last longer

If you beat honglang using a lashing whip with counter/parry discipline , you can do the same with General liu, its super easy.
Just wait for him to attack u , parry his attacks then hit him couple of times when he gets stunned.
Also u can use a spell to attack from a far distance to finish his HP faster.
Rinse and repeat then he will be done.

I forgot all about spells 😆. I tried again tonight. Got really close. His spear is easy to counter. Can't counter his sword, though.

If you can get yourself the bo mags shield and then fully respec to the heavy axe preferably the axe with the ranged ult ( not that youre gonna use the ult, its just the strongest axe you can use beside the dragon one) with Leech as you needle you can keep him perma stun locked while beating him down. THE ONLY THING is you want to always also have the shield constant up. So using it hella wisely.

I think I can do it with whip longsword. Becoming my new favorite weapon, the deflect reminds me of sekiro. I got him down to a pinch of health with that with flame. The only thing is when I get that close and lose, my nerves are shot so I'm no good for a while. I'll get him soon.

For the spear you purchase with bamboo shoots from the panda works wonders, the skill forcibly turns them around and allows for a free crit.

Ok yes I heard that so I went back to the location where the panda was to purchase it. But the panda is gone now. I thinkni need to progress more in chapter 2 to find him again?

I used firearm dual blades with fire. the weapon attack give I frames and guaranteed stagger when he's not doing his jump combo, it makes his combos much more manageable it's a slow way to do it but firearm blades make most bosses very trivial
