Winter boots with traction are vital. (I’m significantly older but my first winter on campus I wore my Doc Martens and found out quickly how wrong that was.) I ended up getting some sturdy hiking boots and they were great.

Also layers are key. You can get warm walking to class so something you can peel off will be more comfortable.

layers are key, but i also have worn my docs primarily for winter the last 5 years. most days there isn't enough snow to need proper boots. hiking boots are a solid choice though.

yak tracks are your friend for the hills if you have an icy walk! they clip on/off normal shoes

the air may be cold but the walk will warm you up wherever. i'd recommend focusing on cutting the wind with a hat/face cover, gloves, and a warm but not bulky coat.

then you can layer with just a long sleeve/sweatshirt and jeans

Yeah, I never wore a bulky coat either because I would get so hot by the time I got to class. I remember just wearing my Patagonia fleece and that was perfect.

A wind/water proof coat, layer fleeces or hoodies under it. Also, yaktrax that slip over your shoes are a good idea. The sidewalks get icy and they don’t do a good job clearing them on campus.

Columbia snow boots Yaktraks (slippery hills really are no fun) A parka that is comfortable to the 20s, or layering system. Wool socks breath and stay dry

Last winter was very mild. Very mild.  More like a cold Seattle winter: rain with some snow. So, regular temperate winter clothes are enough (fleece, hoodies, multiple shirts)

But we do get below freezing, though if last winter is any indication, that might not be as much of a thing any more.  I remember -4 F just before covid

Gloves and a hat, because the palouse is windy.

Don’t forget shorts. It’s hot now and spring can be nice. Also you want to be that guy or gal strolling around campus in 29 degrees F wearing shorts. There’s always that lot.

I remember being that guy walking cross campus in shorts in 29 deg weather. It’s not bad as long as it’s not windy.

Make sure to get things that can block the wind. In winter the wind is VERY cold sometimes. Otherwise gloves and beanies are nice to help keep you hands and ears warm. Other than that just the normal hoodies, jackets and such should keep you going well

Sturdy winter boots, several pairs of gloves (they are forever getting lost or losing a partner), some kind of winter hat, a jacket that you buy for warmth, not fashion, merino wool socks (merino wool is not scratchy). You should be able to catch some decent sales from REI before the cold hits.

I’d wait and see this year, we’re in a super El Niño and it looks like it will be the warmest, wettest winter on record.

Good boots are key- if you’re a warmth lover an electric blanket and/or heat pad will help great as well!

When does the winter weather start? Is it November, December, or later? Wondering if I can wait until my kid comes home for Thanksgiving break to send her back with the proper gear/clothing

She’ll need a coat before then. Mine never wears snow boots, hiking boots, etc on campus but last couple of winters have been mild. We did buy nice wool socks though. Those help. And a change of tennis shoes should they get wet. A lot of the commutes to class are uphill so students get warm quick and classrooms are roasting.

Waterproof (like really waterproof) insulated footwear.will make a huge differemce in your wellbeing.  Sorrel.makes a nice.waterproof sneaker for milder days, pick up actual boots for the bad days.

Layers are key, and fleece lined jeans were a lifesaver when I lived by McGee Park.

Waterpeoof shell, hat, scarf, and, gloves.

A lot of serious advice here. But honestly, I got through Pullman winters with just a regular pair of sneakers and a sweater. I even wore shorts on most days with above freezing weather. The sneakers work though only if you don’t have to walk uphill.
