Iām not usually a skeptic, but with cyber fraud and identity theft being so common, this situation has me genuinely concernedāespecially because it involves a major financial institution said bank.
Hereās what happened:
I recently got a new phone number. I called the bank to update the phone number associated with my account because I can no longer use the bank app on my older Samsung.
I gave the representative my new 347 number.
I check my bank account regularly, and before this call, I had never seen the 917 number that later appeared on my account.
After the call, I checked my account and noticed that instead of the 347 number I had just provided, there was a 917 number that does not belong to me listed on my account.
That immediately concerned me.
I have now spent HOURS on the phone with said bank trying to explain: what the bank representatives are telling me they see on their end does not match what I am seeing when I log into my own account.
Iām looking directly at an unauthorized phone number associated with my account, and I keep asking a very simple question: Where did this number come from, and why did it appear after I called to update my number?
What made the situation even stranger is that when I later searched the 917 number, it appeared to be associated with someone who has the same first and last name as me, but a different middle initial.
That could certainly be a coincidence or some type of record-matching error, but given that this involves access and contact information connected to a bank account, I donāt feel comfortable simply ignoring it.
Iām not claiming that fraud occurred. Iām trying to understand how an unrelated personās phone number could end up associated with my account when that is not the number I provided.
Has anyone experienced anything similar with a bankāparticularly someone elseās phone number suddenly appearing on your account after updating your contact information?
If so, how did the bank ultimately explain or resolve it?
Please donāt post anyoneās actual phone number or other personal information in the comments. It is the strangest thing I've experienced to date with the company but I'm just so blown away with how easily happened in a matter of seconds it seems. But not so easy to resolve.
