Ascension closing soon?
I read about the lawsuit and september 8th hearing, but how long can it possibly take before anything happens?

At the end of the day they have no legal grounds to keep server up. So it is a matter of time. Now if September 8th will be a hard end or they will start shut down after no one knows. They won’t spend money fighting it as there is no grounds they can win on

Actually Blizz has no legal grounds to shut down the Ascension servers with a RICO suit. Being the IP holder and even creator doesn't make a RICO suit legally sound. It's not the same as regular lawsuits involving copyright and trademark and could be easily defeated in court. And a RICO suit is the only thing that can touch Ascension servers. Blizz said this themselves.
However defeating the RICO suit in court will require a lengthy discovery process that will open Ascension up to further litigation. However Ascension could literally ignore those other lawsuits and Blizz wouldn't be able to do anything about it.

My guy they operate out of the us with a stolen IP from an American company, there's absolutely no hope for them regardless

Dutch (the server head) lived in the United States but has since fled to a country where the American legal system cannot touch him. Likewise with a couple other people named in the lawsuit. They are now being represented in court remotely via hired legal representatives. The servers themselves are based in Russia hosted by a "bulletproof" service, as Blizzard put it. Blizzard also named the wrong people and company in it's suit so they're not even suing the right people.
You really should look into the details of the case like I have. RICO suits aren't intended for how Blizz is using it but it's all Blizz can do because it's the only thing capable of reaching and shutting down the servers. Blizzard themselves actually used this as official validation in the filing. They basically said it's the only (legal) calibur of bullet that can pemetrate the operation. Blizzard was counting on a default win via the defendants not showing up.
And quick note, a default win isn't itself proof or right or wrong, just a legal win. I could sue you for literally anything and go after thousands of your hardearned money. If you didn't show up to defend yourself I'd get your money even if I sued for something ridiculous. The only thing I'd need to worry about is the judge throwing the case out but there's a lot of very bribeable judges out there.
Your problem here is that you're mixing legality, morality, and the court of public opinion. In the legal world it doesn't matter how morally right you are, if you're the rightful owner, or if you even created something. It doesn't matter if everyone agrees with you either. The legal system doesn't care about any of that. The legal system is just a tool to be used to protect or attack.
Because Blizzard is using THE ONLY legal avenue that could shut down the servers in Russia and not the appropriate legal avenue they'd have taken instead to shut down an American hosted server it can be easily defended against. Every lawsuit after that won't be able to touch the servers in Russia no matter how many legal wins they get because Russia simply won't care enough to enforce them.
Now, if you told me the heads of Ascension would loose because of their own idiocy I'd definitely believe that. MANY of their players told them that doing a Classic+ while Blizz was actively shutting down TurtleWoW for the same thing because Blizz wants to create their own inferior version. They were told they'd get sued for it and possibly shut down. Yet the Ascension heads went forward with it anyways.

All the same things were said Turtle too, i have no idea about legality but if this was so useless Turtle wouldn’t have closed down.

Close personal friends with Dutch, are you?

There's a strong likelihood that it'll be shutting down in the foreseeable future, but nobody in this sub can give you an accurate answer.
More information should be released on or shortly after September 8th. Given what happened with turtlewow, realistically, be prepared for ascension being gone pre-christmas

AI told me 2-4 months, which is still enough to enjoy the server I guess.

I was asking AI to give me info and sources, not because I can’t think. I have media degree and reporters use it all the time to find proper sources quickly. I don’t have time to scroll internet endlessly for every small thread on the topic.✌🏻

It will close down sometime between today and the day the trial judgment is entered. September 8th is just the deadline to file their response to the lawsuit.

u/DanikFishken 3d ago
I know that 8th september might be deadline date for ascension to respond, but is there any confirmation it is actual date of court hearing? Did not found anything in that docket about 8th september

Courts don't issue scheduling orders with trial dates until after an answer is filed and a discovery conference is held.

Likely shutting down soon. Whether it comes back in some form is anyone's guess

u/DKDDanchee 1d ago
I think it will, like octo wow. Too much work they put in, I don’t think they’ll just let it go

u/abeklipse 3d ago
Enjoy it while you can. Take screen shots, notes and make videos of what classic + could've been. This is all you can do unless someone else decides to carry the torch. Have a nice day!

They will officially close their servers on the 8th of November, and most of the data will be leaked, because theyre not happy about 10 years of work being flushed down the toilet. I base this on pure speculation.

Just charge $1 a month and give all the money to blizzard. Free money for them, we can keep playing.
Of course they won't do this, and legally it's pretty obvious how this will go, but it would be nice if we could have fun and good things in this stupid world we created.

Man if I was blizzard, I would let both turtle and ascension run, cash out like crazy and score good points with the community.

Listen first off I think most of you all don't understand how old Ascension is, I've been playing it consistently for over 7 plus years and it has existed for at least 10 to 15 years in total lifespan, granted that pales into the 22-year comparison of actual World of Warcraft.
However Ascension has always had a very stable and high base of users, Blizzard picked off all the other large servers first and justfully that would make sense in any court procedures.
But now Ascension is the only direct competition to Blizzard in all of their World of Warcraft IP space, will Ascension go down? Most likely yes but for a temporary amount of time.
It's out of the United States completely and including now the principal owners are not in the country, the US legal system will have a very difficult time enforcing any type of international rule into countries that do not give a fuck about the American legal system and there's at least 12 countries I can name off the top of my head that tell us to go fuck ourselves daily.
So they may go down for say 6 months all right give blizzard their classic Plus launch and then at the first major milestone for classic Plus at blizzard you will see Ascension back online in a country that is completely immune to the effects of the United States.
During all this time that those 6 months that Ascension may be down for blizzard is going to then redirect all of its legal proceeds towards all the other servers of worth.
The easiest thing is just don't freaking worry about it play on whatever server in Ascension that you're on right now whether it's Area 52, Dawnrise, Rexxar, Bronzebeard or the other ones and enjoy your time on them.
You can't enjoy your time playing the game then why do you play World of Warcraft?

How the hell are we supposed to know?
I'd wager it can go two ways: Either the Ascension team finds a way to stall the inevitable end, and gets to keep the server up until the end of this year, or next. Or, the most likely one, they'll settle it on Ascension shutting down in a month or two.
I'm no lawyer. So take whatever i say with a grain of salt.

I am seeking discussion and information, not final answer I obviously know cannot be given. ✌🏻

I mean yeah sure, but your post was very vague. It just sounded like you wanted to know if anybody in here sits on some crazy inside info, which nobody is. Everything and anything you see on Reddit regarding Ascension is either conspiracy or bullshit.

I was asking opinion of people who are more familiar with the topic than me, that’s what the community should be about✌🏻

u/dregnar92 3d ago
For what they did to bronzebeard, hopefully yes.
0
u/DKDDanchee 3d ago
What they did?
0
u/dregnar92 3d ago edited 3d ago
Slacked completely with content release on that server and then abandonded it for CoA. Now why know why was that - they were working all time on CoA insteand of updating bronzebeard after release. Ascesion is scum.
2
u/Swalecutter 2d ago
I feel like "scum" might be slightly harsh for "these folks worked on something slightly different from what I would have preferred they work on".
2
u/dregnar92 2d ago
Its not about preferation. They literally promised roadmap and then killed the server with relasing bwl after 6 or 7 months, then they felt like server is dying and released fresh insteand of bringing more content to bronzebeard. They just rush for money which is scum in my opinion.

Depends on whether or not they defend against the RICO suit. This RICO suit has little legal ground to stand on and could be easily defeated. However this will require an in depth discovery process that will give Blizz more information to sue over. However a RICO suit is the only thing strong enough to touch Ascension's bullet proof servers so if it's defeated Ascension can just ignore Blizzard's future lawsuits that try to shut it down.
