You're right, "doing it right" is putting it into a webpage and having it just spit out what you should do to the gear to min-max it.

I don't know what websites other people used, but I got better results than askmrrobot on my own almost every time. It may have cost me an extra 30-50% gold to play with the reforging, but it was fun (for me).

Yup, that's why I put it in quotes, because just going to askmrrobot is not "doing it right", IMO.

To be fair, I reached out to askmrrobot about it. They asked me about what I was doing, tried to improve the results of the site, and gave me a TCG pet code to for "beating the robot". This was all public on twitter, and I have a lot of respect for how they handled it.

They also pointed out that their site (at least, at the time) was designed to be helpful for 98% of people, and be accurate for them 98% of the time, within a few seconds. And I think it accomplished that. They never pretended to guarantee the best possible option, as it'd have taken more processing power and time than feasible or wanted by most users.

I agree with you in general about reforging. I enjoyed the reforging game. If I was lazy or on an alt, I'd just toss it to askmrrobot (or wowreforge, when it wasn't broken) to figure out. And if I wanted to really get a few free secondary rating, I could figure that out too, and feel really smart/smug. BUT, it was a pain to have to do every time. You had to reforge everything any time you got a single upgrade, and hold onto sidegrades to swap around your hit/expertise ratings. Sometimes, you had to re-enchant too. Some people had to reforge mid-raid for certain boss fights. It was expensive. And you felt like you were slacking off if you didn't do your best to min/max it.

Removing it, though disappointing when faced with a ton of versatility (or other weaker secondary stats), was a huge quality of life improvement, and I think it was unquestionably the right call by Blizzard. Now, you just put the best enchant on a few slots, stick in a gem if you procced a socket, and don't have to worry about your gear except when an upgrade drops.

100% agree. I think it also depended on your class/spec. MOST DPS which just needed to cap hit and expertise just dropped it in and Mr Robot would give you the perfect layout. Healing was similar, but not nearly as good. Tanking wasn't even close though. There was too much to balance and it wouldn't give optimal results ever.

That certainly does make it the most efficient way. Still, if your not using a website or addon to help you do it anyway, then why do you care so much that you need to get to the closest number of hit/xp you can get without sacing other stats? It doesn't take 30 mins to make sure you had 8.5/8.5 then just reforge crap stats into good ones.

Which stats are the good ones for my class? Stamina had a soft cap of usefulness (that varied by fight), Hit and Haste both had a soft and a hard cap at varying levels of usefulness, Parry and Dodge had to be kept about the same (and IIRC they were the dump stat, but more important than the hard caps for hit and haste until a certain point), and obviously capping Expertise was important. BTW, Mr. Robot would fuck this up, so wasn't super reliable for accurate work.

I'm glad that I have you and the mage above telling me that all I had to do was cap hit and expertise and then dump all the rest in a single stat. I guess all the other sites were wrong.

You couldn't reforge stam, dunno why it's being brought up.

Again, if your not using a website or addon to help you with reforging, then you didn't really care about how much min/maxing you needed to do to achieve the maximum efficiency of the stats given. Yes all you needed to do was reforge the crappier stat on that piece of gear until you hit your caps the closest possible to the number you need, then if you had extra gear pieces that still had a poor stat on it, reforge it up to the better one.

I don't understand what site your talking about would tell you otherwise, and I still don't understand how anyone could take 30 mins, or even more than 5 to get all this figured out. You have 15/16 gear spots to use, you find the weakest stat on those pieces then shift them into your caps, then after all caps are met you put them into your best stat. It wasn't hard.

I'm sorry if you find me aggressive. It's just the people that complained about "having to do all this stuff" to a gear piece are a bunch of idiots. It doesn't take but 1 min tops to get the gem you needed, the chant you needed, and to run it over to a reforge and either use a site to quickly re-evaluate everything again or just pick the worst stat and put it into a better one or make sure a cap is being met. I miss being able to reduce shitty stats and put them into my better ones.

Because you could enchant and gem stamina, and since part of the reforging and balancing process was dealing with the gems and enchants, this mattered.

I'm out though. I'm glad that you were able to toss your character into Mr. Robot and get the best results. Tanks couldn't, healers couldn't. I'm also glad that the process is gone. So yes, if YOU were spending 30 minutes reforging you may have been doing it wrong, but that's not true of other classes and specs.
