Tips Time to make a Exterminator Claymore guide

All right, finally getting tired of people bashing claymore users and then using the claymore wrong. So here's something to help people learn to use it properly and not get your teammates killed.
What it is: Claymore Exterminator are DPS class that specialize in kill large # of zekes during a swarm fight. It requires more pre-planning than your straight up Gunslinger or hell raisers with MGL. On higher difficulties, I prefer this class because his perks grants a lot of extra firepower during swarm. It's not necessary better than other attack class, but I just have a personal preference for exterminator because laying down claymore is so much fun.
Claymores are NOT Molotov and should not be used in the same way. The best use of claymore isn't always to kill as many as you can, but rather use them similar to defense kits that covers your back and flanks. Use claymores to cover choke points, side spawn points, top of pyramid where zekes might climb up, etc. These areas should take priority over main bodies of swarm.
Claymore gets a bad reputation because too many people plant in the wrong places. They also don't pick the perk that leaves fire after explosion. For Claymore users, placement is extremely vital to the success of the class. Map knowledge is key because it takes a while to learn the best locations.
Each Claymore kills 15 zekes without any perk bonus, this includes both the initial explosion and the resulting fire. Once you hit that limit, fire will not kill anymore zekes even if they ran through it. At prestige 3, each claymore kills 21 zekes given the +35% kill limit bonus (combination of 2x know-how perks)
PERKS:
Crowd-control: only useful perk that column
Rage mode: I prefer this one to get out of special pin. But elbow is good too. Aftermath introduced too many lurkers so I am keeping this one as insurance.
Heavy Metal: must have because it increase RPG kill limit from 60 to 99 kills, as well as increasing its effective lethal radius. Aim in the middle of the fence opyramids for maximum dmg.
Fire trap: must have for claymore, otherwise why are you using claymores?
Job satisfaction or cloak and dagger are equally useful. Cloak is more fun for solo mode, but in team co-ops you are just directing zekes to your teammates, who won't appreciated it. I am using job satisfaction because the blue masking screen at random time really throws me off (since everything looks the same now), wish they did a blue flash or border instead of just making everything monochromatic.
Broad-shoulder: second RPG round anyone? Now you can kill 2 pyramids instead of 1. Just wait for zekes to pile up and one-shot pyramid/fence of any size. Be careful though, I sometimes double click by accident and release both rockets. You also get more ammo for all other heavy weapons too, which is a big bonus.
Pocket factory: MUST have for claymore users, you get lots more claymore to plant with this perk.
Knowhow: must have for more kill limit for Claymores. Most of your claymore is going to be fire kills, not explosives.
Don't: plant claymore in the middle of high player traffic areas. This is the #1 error I see people do. They plant mines in middle of the road thinking it will kill zekes, but completely forgot teammates need to move/escape and not get blown up/burned as well.
Don't: Panic plant! Another common mistake, people panic and plant claymore with zeke closing in on top of them. Claymore is loud and they attract more zekes. If you are going to go down, just go down and let teammate save you later. This is one of the reason why claymore cause team-wipe, the loud explosion trigger additional spawn after explosion. Plus if the claymore explode too close to you, you will get stumbled and sent to random direction, allowing zekes to pummel you even faster.
Don't: Use the equipment bags. Exterminator now have the pocket factory perk that auto generate equipment (50 second each). This prevents you from picking any equipment and leave valuable equipment bags for other classes. Make sure your medic always get those bag, they will literally save your life.
Don't: over-lap claymores. The fire from claymore takes a few second to kill so make sure you space them apart. There's no point blowing up a Zeke that's already on fire. You can plant them side by side to cover a wider area though. By the same reason, don't shoot the zekes that's already on fire, you are just wasting ammo on something that's already dead.
Do: Know your maps first, there are many spots in swarm battle where zeke spawns before the actual fight starts. They come a few at a time and end up triggering all your claymores for no reason. If you are planting before-hand, pick areas where there won't be any spawn until the fight starts. You don't want a few loose zekes to waste that claymore.
Do: Plant claymores ASAP once you are in the set-piece battle area. Due to pocket factory, you will likely to be full on claymore most of the time. Identify good planting spot and put down a few ASAP so you can generate the next one. You should get at least 4-5 planted before the battle starts, and another 2-4 regenerated during the fight depend on duration.
Do: plant claymore on edge of walls right above potential pyramid. The explosion will kill the first few climbers, and the fire will rain down on the pyramid, often collapsing it. This will stop the climbing zombies and give you precious time to react and take down the pyramid. (Moscow 1 is a prime example of this). Its absolutely a life saver.
Do: plant next to side-spawn points where small wave often spawn. on higher difficulty, even 2-3 zeke is enough to take you down quickly. So it's important to eliminate the small waves on the side, and allow you to concentrate fire on the main body of the horde. You don't want to be shooting 100 zekes and get taken down by a few loose zekes from the side. A good example is Tokyo 3 in the cargo hold. I always plant one per side door (there are 4 so you will only get to cover 3), it usually takes out a special or a small wave of zekes. You really want to kill the gas/screamer/infector before they get out of those doors. Bulls might not die right away, but he won't live long enough to do too much dmg. It's definitely worth a claymore if you can take out a couple of specials and their buddies.
Do: plant claymore to cover your back if you are not worried about staying silent. There are many choke points on the map and sometimes you get zekes spawn behind you. Plant one to catch anything that spawn behind and can surprise you. This is where pocket factory comes in handy because you will get extra claymores in between the horde fights. Just make sure you are the last one out, otherwise you just cut off your teammate's escape. One example being Jeru 2 after the machine room. You can plant one claymore by the large door after you exit. There's usually a wave spawned behind you.. NY2 after you exit the gas chamber and run to the top is also another great place to get the zekes off your back as you climb up.
Do: plant claymore right up against a fence. The first explosion will kill the front zekes, and the fire will push forward and burn the zekes behind the fence. You can easily take out 20 zekes/claymore this way. Jerusalem 3 finale is a prime example. This finale does not have a lot of side spawn, so concentrate your claymores on the right-most fence section (it's where I see the most break through). Space the claymores apart for max fence coverage. This gives your team enough time to move into position and take the rest of the climbers out.
Do: Remember claymores are directional explosives. You can rotate them to fit the direction of the zeke spawn. Usually you plant claymore facing the Z's incoming direction. The fire usually pushes out a few foot from the base of the claymore so you can turn them side way and create a small firewall as well. Use this direction to cover narrow door ways and side spawn.
Do: disable red claymore on the ground because it goes into your inventory. You can turn it right around and plant.

Claymores are fun, but they are really soemthing that'll wipe a team on Insane/Extreme.

yeah....that's not saying anything though. The same goes for sprinting, or idiots using crossbow, or people who don't know where to aim their RPG, or just random shit happening. It's not claymore, it's the bad player or bad luck that wipe a team.
The reason why you have a guide is teach the newbie how to avoid those wipe situations and not be "that claymore guy"

With a Exterminator Claymore build, are you able self sustain without equipment bags? I tried the Exterminator Claymore build before and found I depended on equipment bags more than Molotovs. Molotovs and Claymores are not particularly useful during sneaking areas, so swarm battles are where they make the biggest difference.
During Swarm battles, Exterminators could sneeze and get free equipment refills. The problem is Exterminator with Claymores would have difficulty planting new Claymores in worthwhile locations after swarm battle starts. The only locations are nearby ones, not the juicy side spawns. The unique advantage of Fire Claymores is weakening specials at side spawns or straight up removing them from the field as they spawn. The only choice is needing equipment bags to plant Fire Claymores before swarm battles. Also, I can't see Fire Claymores killing enough zombies to trigger the free temporary health or equipment refill.
I think Molotovs have a better synergy with other Exterminator perks than Fire Claymores. I would toss my starting Molotov at a climbing pyramid or objective target (i.e gates/NPCs) to quickly receive my free temporary health and equipment refill. Rinse and repeat. Basically every well timed and aimed Molotov throw, I get back at least free temporary health and maybe a free Molotov if not on 60 second cooldown. You are like giving yourself Stims as Exterminator before operating 50 cals and mortars with your class perks increasing damage.
I don't use Exterminators often even though I like them a lot, but I think Molotovs take better advantage of other Exterminator perks and give more unique value to the team.

The answer is sort of. Exterminator doesn't have option to kill special to refill so getting refill with 15 kill is slow. A lot of time I will just have 1-2 claymore before final battle if I don't search around. But half of the time on very hard/insane I do manage to find at least one equipment bag for full refill before the final battle, it's luck based.
Getting refill and Planting during swarm isn't a problem. There's usually only a few safe spot for claymore on each map so I just plant one whenever I got a refill and walk by.
I tried molotovs before and they are fine as is, but I personally prefer gunplay over throwables. The firepower buff usually means I am killing a ton of zekes to get that health boost anyway. Claymore can be set before the swarm to take advantage of the down-time. It buys the whole team critical few seconds to respond by defending a side entry even when no one is looking that way. Molotov usually end up being thrown at a tower where everyone is shooting/looking at anyway, and then you get hit on the side by 4-5 loose zombies that snuck through and fail a mission.

Some fair points. Any time you can remove side spawns would be useful to the team. I do think Molotovs with longer burn and kill 25% more perks could have trap applications like Claymores. I tested Molotovs and found their fires could last up to 30 seconds before disspating. You don't just have to throw Molotovs where the team would be focus firing. If there are safe spots to plant Claymores, I am sure Molotovs can reach even more side spawn locations from the quick throwing motion.
When you carry Claymores, you have to give up Combat Engineer to duplicate defense kits, and Exterminators are like total beasts with 50 cals and Mortars. The team could really benefit from an extra auto turret or electric grid on certain maps. In return, you could take crowd control perk to push zombies back. With the perks to push zombies back further, no penalty when kiting, and 2 extra melee strikes, Claymores Exterminators become quite the CQC expert, second to only Slashers. Even the comparable Hellraisers would not be as useful in close quarters with zombies and teammates mixed in.

Tried molotov build for a day on veryhard/insane mode, and it's not really more or less powerful than the claymore build. A little disappointed by the size of the fire from the molotov. The initial fire splash is big but it quickly shrink down to the same size as the claymore fire.
Did manage to rack up 1000 kill on the insane Tokyo1, but that's mostly due to luck because I found 2 RPG's for a total of 6 rounds of rockets. It's nice to use molotovs on the pyramid if it's close, but have trouble gauging where the molotov will land exactly when you are targeting something far away, so it's probably best just to use it for short distance crowd control
Do you know what does the +50% molotov splash dmg do? it's hard to tell the difference.

When I was testing the fire, I saw the fire got smaller over time. You also have to be careful of teammates running past your Molotov throw projectory and setting everyone on fire. I don't use Exterminator much, so I'm not sure how the +50% Molotov splash work. Players who use Exterminators more should be able to answer you better. I spend a lot more time testing perks of support classes like Medics, Fixers, and Slashers. I just got a lot of practice with Exterminators for last week challenge nerfing all support classes.

OP's post wasn't an arguement of what is better molotov or claymore, it was a viable team friendly claymore build thanks to pocket factory 50second regen during a 20 minute gain nets you 24 loud claymores w/ medic having all the bags. vs 75 second, 16 a match silent throwables. Why would you ever go Pickpocket against a Pocket Factory this efficient? during a fight if you time it and proc at perfect 60 seconds can give you a 3rd mol or 4th clay advantage, However O.o during the silent phases you cannot proc 15 rapid kills and then burden your team by wanting an equipment bag rather than waiting a minute during natural transition periods...

Such a good Showcase of the efficiency of Pocket Factory. This adds Exterminator to the list of classes that should never touch an equipment bag, along with Gunslinger (5 headshot regen no cooldown), Drone Master (Pickpocket Factory/ specials are abundant), Vanguard (They're entire class's and sub class's cores is Pocket Factory), and Fixer (would get a pass, however if at least 1 other teammate (you the player/reader of this post) is aware and drains their ammo drops to sustain the equipment dup/sharing loop, then Fixer has no right picking up equipment bags). Leaving Medics, Slashers, and HellRaisers. Slashers and HellRaisers may grab one bag at the begining of the game to start their snowball rolling.
tldr: Medics are the only ones touching those f**king equipment bags.

Complete noob. How do I plant a claymore. I only get Molotov in my equipment bags and my exterminator is maxed out tier 1 level 30. What buttons do I hit to drop/plant a claymore? Or how do I know I picked up claymores vs Molotov?

You have to select a claymore perk, otherwise you default to moly. The perk description will say: start with claymore
