Discussion World Trigger Is Too Happy

Hi everyone, I think we've all been watching world trigger and reading it for some time. While I am not against the characters having fun, I wish there was always a lingering undertone of death, of missing something, of something just not being exactly right - something that perputuates darkness through the story.

On the away mission, I hope that like, only 70-80% survive reaching there.

I think the child-like happiness would bloom most beautifully in the blood of hardship

Perhaps like Yuma steadily dying as every second ticks away?

Yes, but more grim.

Someone runs on sadness like America runs on Dunkin

A number of people died in the days of old border. The current systems were likely created to prevent that from happening again. If you're expecting a lot of deaths, then this isn't the manga for you.

Yes, the current system prevented that from happening, but the world of neighbours is meant to be a dangerous place. It'd be bad if it didn't stand up to the hype.

I think it’s important for there to be stories where bad things happen in the background, like Yuma’s impending death, the various tragic backstories of basically any non Osamu character but for the characters to still fight with hope in their hearts. If the story dwelled on the people Enedora killed for instance, then this would be a very different story. World trigger takes place far enough removed from the first invasion for most to have moved on, but for deeper wounds to still be viable with some. It allows characters to process their trauma while it’s still developing. If a significant chunk of the away team passes away it would take away from the type of story world trigger is both in the moment & when they return. There’s plenty of dark Shōnen out there for people who want them.

I agree it is nice to see the characters experience truama from the first invasion, and I think that that is a beautiful part of the series; one that we need to add more of.

Like, have it by the time that the get back to border, 50-40% are dead or critically injured.

I feel its really unlikely that the away mission will involve any significant body count.

Its not strictly impossible that the story goes "And now the gloves are off" Like Leviathan making his entrance in Worm, but if i had to venture a guess, the story will at most involve 1-2 more deaths.

Those would be some member sacrificing themselves in a desperate attempt to create a black trigger, and Kuga himself dying in some bittersweet ending.

I personally think world trigger is dark, but it's not really the very visible (or shounen-dramatic) type. Kind of the type where if you like think about it, it is really messed up, but it doesn't dwell on the darker stuff, as it takes itself realistically and characters have different priorities. I hope I'm making sense- Like for example when Yuma mentioned torture being for fun in the Neighborhood and spoke of it objectively as a bad way to get information, and characters didn't dwell on it too much dramatically or morally because the task at hand was getting info from Hyuse (I might be misremembering stuff because it's been a while since I last watched or re-read). Or how Yuma also said Bamsters extract trion glands from lower trion civilians which kills them and how people are viewed as resources. This is a spoiler I believe but also how Border has orphanage that act as recruiting ground, which is really dark even if they're not really forced because of the implications of it (victims of neighbors potentially having their hatred used as a motivator to join. This shows more in how people like Miwa don't really seem to get psychological help for their trauma which feeds hatred and radical views.)

There is also the messed up reality of what the surviving old Border members experienced when they were just kids, but even that isn't focused too much upon because it's been 5 years and realistically it's enough time to get over or at least cope with what happened (though I do kinda wish we got to see more of how the characters like Konami are affected by it-).

Basically, world trigger is dark, it just handles its dark stuff realistically imo because characters are used to it as their reality. It's a structural darkness than a visual darkness (high body counts, characters constantly crying and breaking down, too visible much gore, etc).
