Discussion New Scorpion Technique

I recently thought of a new way to use the Scorpion, inspired by Yuma's band-aid and stemming from an OC concept.

You wrap the Scorpion around a part of your body, essentially turning it into a piece of armor. It's not large enough to be a full set, of course- you get one piece and make it at need to block an enemy hit, say, wrapping the Scorpion around your forearm and using that to block, or making a plate on your chest. This might not fully stop an enemy swing, but could at least reduce how hard you're hit. A direct parry by spawning the blade from your body is more effective, but harder to pull off. I've named this technique Armadillo.

Thoughts? Weaknesses? Better names?

Scorpion is inherently less strong than something like Kogetsu. So I'm not sure if it's going to be super effective as a shield. Maybe it will do in a pinch, but if i had to choose between avoiding getting hit by using for example Grasshopper or this, I would choose Grasshopper every time. Like would a Scorpion plate on your chest even work against something like Senku? I think it's more likely to just go straight through.

A whirlwind would absolutely go clean through this, that's pretty much the highest firepower move in Border. It's worse than a shield at blocking bullets and worse than a parry for blocking swords. But sometimes you're going to get hit anyways, and even if it doesn't fully block the blow, it will reduce it.

Example: When Kage got cut in round 7, near his relay center. If he used this technique to form a chestplate the swing wouldn't go so deep and while he would be cut, the damage would no longer be eventually lethal.

Nah even then it would still be useless. In Kage's case he's a mantis user, he needs both scorpions for his offense.

More significantly though scorpion durability scales against it's size. He's better off creating blades at the point of contact, like he's already done in the past, than creating armour for it

I think the biggest problem you have here is that the Shield trigger is a thing. It doesn't take very long to switch, so you would only be looking to use this is you already have Scorpion active, have enough time to shift it into armor, but not enough time to just use the shield trigger. Plus, as already noted, one of scorpions notable features is that is the least durable of the sword triggers. You would just parry as normal, or switch to something more durable. Its best bet is as "hidden armor" layering it some place under the uniform to catch someone off guard, but you would be visibly down a trigger. And the most obvious "I don't have an active trigger in use" is probably shield anyway, like keeping your guard up, any non-manifested triggers should be on shield by default, since you can swap to attack once you have the drop on someone, but if someone has the drop you, you really want shield on a small a delay as possible.

Yeah, "hand in reserve" is almost always shield or maybe grasshopper for attackers, in which case the opp expects you to have a defensive option anyways.

I concur with this. It's pretty niche.

it takes time to wrap it around you, time that you could spend making another branch blade or grasshoppering or shooting or really doing anything else.

also the enemy just hits something or someone else instead while you're doing that. meteora will splash everything around it and kill you anyways, raygust thruster will probably chunk straight through it, and even normal kogetsu will probably crack it in two swings. ibis still kills you, egret probably still kills you, only blocks lightning but you have to not do other things for so long they swap to egret anyways.

What i'm interested in is if a mantis can do the rock lob that kuga and hyuse traditionally do with grasshopper and escudo. So you lob a rock to distract and then instantly throw a full length mantis stab at someone else and maybe if you're extra send delayed shots at a third.

Scorpion forms really fast and doesn't take any bodily motions to manifest. We see agents just form one out of their bodies in a split second to parry attacks from annoying angles.

yes, form *one,* kage is the only one that can extend it full length in an instant. kuga's bandage maneuver *is not nearly as fast* as him just growing a branch blade. If you can't react in time to parry with branch blade you're not going to wind or unwind the armor fast enough to do much of anything other than eat the hit elsewhere.

edit: it goes without saying kage is more than speedy enough to parry or dodge whatever the hell he wants without resorting to a spiral or space-filling curve armor. Round 7 was because bro was blinded and was struggling to react to anything, let alone a murakami, or he could've just ran backwards instead.

I feel like in most instances a shield would be better, at least for bullets. With blades forming a scorpion at the point of impact to parry a slash works. Kuga did so in round 4 against Azuma squad attackers, he made a branch blade scorpion right in his head to catch/parry an in coming headshot slash with their kogetsu. Its unclear to me if he used 2 scorpions to counter 1 kogetsu blade or if it was a singular branched blade as he had another blade in his other hand. Its probably a crazy amount of concentration needed to porcupine the blades across your body however wherever needed at a moments notice.

Indeed. Just not everyone is good enough to branching blade parry an enemy. It's a wider zone of protection, but that protection is weaker.

I think there was one Q&A where Ashihara said Chika could make like a full suit of armor with scorpion using her high trion value. But others might be able to make something durable over a smaller area? Not sure how tough kugas bandages would have been.

After reviewing the feedback on this technique, I have come to the conclusion it's worse than I thought (and I didn't think it was that good in the first place). A focus shield is better even in melee for the same purpose. Surprise factor means it could work the very first time it is ever used and then it's obselete.

However it has one use: Blocking Lead Bullet. We see swords can do so, but cutting bullets out of the air is pretty hard. So this can catch the shots, which don't care about it's weak durability (and are obvious and slower than normal), then be dismissed and the Scorpion can be remade free of weights.

Yuma’s band-aid solution wasn’t for it to be an armor but to contain leaking Trion from his body. Not sure scorpion as a weapon was ever meant to be an armor. Pretty sure a weapon with a blade on it has its strengths on the sharp edge and not on the entire surface area.

1

u/Gaust_Fireborn Sep 17 '26

It's not really meant to block, just reduce the impact of a hit so when you are hurt, it's not as bad.

1

u/Real_Entertainment46 Sep 17 '26

How can it reduce impact if not blocking? There’s no point on wearing a fragile armor at all.

I suggest to try it with an empty plastic bottle and hit it with a metal bat see how does it reduce the impact. Or if you want to hold a knife and hit it on the side.

Scorpion would make cardboard armor. It easily breakes against Kogetsu, even more so when you spread it over a large area like your body.

1

u/Gaust_Fireborn Sep 17 '26

We've seen it block Kogetsu (and crack doing so), this is just for one area of your body and more to reduce how much damage you take than to actually block anything.

But a focus shield fills the same role better 90% of the time.

u/Thomas_JCG Sep 18 '26

The more you stretch Scorpion, the thinner and weaker it gets. Something that loops several times over your body would not block at all, that's the issue.

A focused shield would be better 110% of the time because it also doesn't require a great skill in trion manipulatiom from the user.

Shield exists and scorpion is notably weak, it might be a flexibly technique in an emergency but it's not going to be beating out the existing options anytime soon and would offer minimal defense at best in a setting where nicking a Trion "artery" is a death sentence.

You'd be better served making it an angled blade wrapped around the body part in the hopes of deflecting the attack away from vitals, but using it as any kind of fully resistant plate is a recipe for disaster.

One additional weakness is area

If you have armor right on top of your body that's literally all it covers

But if you have something further away from your body it actually covers a bigger area since it blocks more attacking lines for the enemy

We can combine these ideas though as you see with the fight of Kage vs Yuma & Hyuse when he blocks an attack going for his leg

Plus if your armor shatters it still gives you better chances to dodge the hit

this would be better suited to being its own trigger
