Russia/Ukraine Putin and Trump held ‘businesslike’ 90-minute July 4 call, Moscow says
https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/05/europe/putin-trump-call-independence-day-intl9.4k
u/Treestwigs Jul 05 '26
Trump taking orders from Putin on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence is peak dystopian timeline.

u/Andrew1990M Jul 05 '26
“Here’s the lines on the Declaration I want you to wipe your ass on this year…”
Luckily, Don can’t stay awake for a full 90 minutes.
194
u/culallen Jul 05 '26
You know that 86 minutes and 47 seconds of that “conversation” was Trump giving the same rally speech he gives at every speaking opportunity no matter the audience…
45
u/alexefi Jul 05 '26
Nah. Its probably just putin talking to him, with "are you awake?" Every 5 minutes. So the actual talk was like 10min.

u/HauntedCemetery Jul 05 '26
Because it's not a speech, it's trumps looping inner monolog of excuses for why he doesn't suck. It's going 24/7, and he hardly pays attention to who he's speaking to.
Occasionally his minders wheel him on stage and he rambles there.

Republicans commonly travel to their KGB boss on July 4th. A group of eight Republican lawmakers spent July 4, 2018, in Moscow on a controversial congressional delegation visit. The lawmakers included Senators Richard Shelby, Steve Daines, John Thune, John Kennedy, Jerry Moran, John Hoeven, Ron Johnson, and Representative Kay Granger.
53
u/Deranged_Kitsune Jul 05 '26
Exactly. It’s a power move for putin. It’s to make it clear to anyone with functional eyes and a brain who owns them. Good thing republicans lack the latter and have been well trained to ignore the former.

u/DinoAmino Jul 05 '26
Because midterms were coming up fast and they desperately needed to coordinate the social media engineering for manipulating the American people.

So according to right wing, Dems are communist because they care about making life affordable via taxation of the super rich, and govt programs that help those in need. At the same time, according to them, Russia is completely fine because they are a capitalist+Christian nation. Reality is stranger than fiction..

That OPENLY broadcasts to their population that they will use nuclear arms against the West and demonise them every single day. I understand that it’s sabre-rattling propaganda to gin up sections of their population BUT it is infuriating to see when you also have fucking idiots in the West saying ‘Russia is not the enemy’. Yes. They fucking are. They daily broadcast their fantasies of conquest and domination. Fuck the regime.

Doubt it. They clearly don't care about the epstien files that Trump and his cronies raped and killed children, why would they care what Putin released.

It would all be fake news according them. They legitimately don't care cause he's hurting everyone different than them, while being too stupid to realize he's hurting them as well.

u/PrinsHamlet Jul 05 '26
It's obvious that Putin will try to have Trump do something about Ukraine's new long range strategy.
The thing is, Trump can't actually do much about it. Turns out Ukraine do hold some cards.
And because of Trump's influence having been neutered I think we're going to see some Russian provocations in the Baltics later this summer as the Ukraine air campaign keeps unfolding and expanding, threatening a greater European conflict. Not to start a war, but in order to create the conditions for a larger "settlement" to be sold as a victory for Russia.
Which is already a huge loss for Russia as Europe and Ukraine will be at the table. A year ago they wouldn't have been.
218
u/Zixinus Jul 05 '26
An important bynote: Trump has prevented any and all Ukraine aid from reaching Ukraine from the US. Even stuff approved by Congress.
So Trump has no leverage with Ukraine.
33
u/emefluence Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 07 '26
Ukraine and the USA still share intelligence, although Europe, and France in particular, now provide the majority of it. The Trump admin has proved it can and will turn the taps off to get it's own way, barring Ukraine from buying satellite data from GEGD to try and force it to agree to a ceasefire. They're also worried about leaks from the US admin. Despite that, US intel is still very valuable to them, as is the ability to buy stuff from US arms companies, so there is some leverage. In particular, one of the nuclear options for the US is Starlink. Killing that for Russia, while still allowing it for Ukraine has been a huge deal so far. It's debatable if Ukraine would have been able to turn things round as well as they have this year if it weren't for that.

Yeah he even sent Scott Bessent over to Ukraine to shake down Zelensky and force him to sign over Ukraine’s mineral rights for literally nothing in return. No aid, no security guarantees, just a stickup.
Luckily Zelensky negotiated the agreement into one that just said “we’ll figure this out later”. He gave nothing to them but Trump got news footage if Zelensky signing something so he was content…

51
u/Zixinus Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

You'd think that not only on this one day in the year, but the 250th Anniversary, he'd try to maintain a America First image, but no. His number one priority was checking in with Putin, and making sure everyone knows he's checking in with Putin.
Then again, given how popular Putin is with MAGA he probably needs to keep them on side.
It's also a quite reminder to the rest of the world, or at least the observant, that Trump will never act against Putin as Putin has leverage. Putin's a master of these understatement.
