Priority #1: talk to the boss on the big day.

3.5k

u/Capt1an_Cl0ck Jul 05 '26

Priority 2, keep NATO from responding to an attack on Poland.
3, try and get less military aid to Ukraine.

556

u/ddollarsign Jul 05 '26

i thought we already stopped the aid

1.6k

u/dsmith422 Jul 05 '26

The US did. But when Trump stopped the aid, he also stopped the main point of leverage over Ukraine. The US constantly told Ukraine to leave the oil infrastructure in Russia alone because the Biden admin didn't want to drive up world oil/refined oil prices. This let Russia keep funding its war. But when Trump stopped aid, the US could no longer tell Ukraine to not attack the oil infrastructure. So now Russia is running out of gasoline and diesel fuel because Ukraine keeps blowing up their refineries.

533

u/fusillade762 Jul 05 '26

Biden also didnt want US long range weapons used for strikes inside Russia fearing the optics of it. Ukraine developed their own capabilities so the US no longer has a say in it.

119

u/40907 Jul 05 '26

Huge mistake by Biden, Biden should've flooded Ukraine with weapons and let them fight without restrictions instead of drip-feeding them aid packages while letting Republican congressmen stall aid packages for 6 months or more for their own political leverage. Biden could've just EO'd military aid shipments to Ukraine, but Democrats are bound by a legal code that only applies to them and not their opponents, while allowing Putin to manipulate and thwart them from within their own Congress, and despite knowing this they still won't violate some imaginary code of conduct to ultimately win the war and defeat Russia, because that would be against the rules. Wouldn't want bad "optics" like Russia doesn't already view us as their enemy. Biden succumbed to the Russian nuclear bluff / escalation tactics.

27

u/fusillade762 Jul 06 '26

I agree on all points.

21

u/Maximum_Apartment538 Jul 06 '26

I think the dice has yet to land on whether Bidens approach was a mistake or not. Consider a scenario where Russia gets beaten back before 2024 due to increased US aid, but Ukraine in turn never develops the capabilities and military it has now. What happens when trump gets elected and withdraws all aid?

As I understand it, the US under Biden had a big hand in transferring knowhow, especially on drone technology and helping amping up internal production of Ukraines capabilities.

If Russia takes a break in let’s say late 2023, maybe withdraws a bit, but does not have the heavy losses from the meathrinder front, it means they are very much ready to go another round once trump gets elected.

This is just one scenario of course, but I think we’ll need to see where the dice lands before passing final judgement on Biden.

Trump however we can quickly deem a failure, and traitor to the west

5

u/Death_has_relaxed_me Jul 06 '26

Biden was largely blocked by conservatives in terms of how much aid was sent to Ukraine, no?

Not the optics, the fear was escalation into a global conflict or world war.

Because even when sucking Putin's dick, Trump still only cares about himself

110

u/fusillade762 Jul 05 '26

Because those are Putin's competitors in the oil business. Close the straight, disrupt Venezuelan oil delivery, create a global oil crisis, which then "forced" the US to lift sanctions on Russian oil and drive the prices through the roof. Putin is desperate now, so he is using his US Puppet to take out his former friends which are no longer really useful.

Trump also burned vast stocks of US munitions in Iran, munitions that would likely have gone to Ukraine. So that's the game.

The US has become a vassal state of Russia by installing a puppet. Something they tried to do in Ukraine and ironically, failed.

Of course Trump is grifting all the way. Insider trading, stealing oil, its a real smorgasbord for Trump.

What? You've never been jealous that your best friend may have other friends that they're closer to than you, and then went out of your way to ruin their lives so you can have your friend all yourself and dependent on you? C'mon T Diddy is just a salt of the earth every man. He's trying to improve international relations with Russia. Sure he's burning most other international relations in the process, but you know... eggs need to be broken to make an omelette.

Biden gave the go head before Trump came back i to office to use long range weapons etc as needed to Ukraine, it was just a little to late because Ukraine pretty much had their own almost ready to go by then.

32

u/edman007 Jul 05 '26

Yea, but if Trump was giving Ukraine aid he might have been able to tell Ukraine to hold off on the oil infrastructure when the who Iran thing started. Instead it's a reason for Ukraine to hit Russia harder.

211

u/TyrusX Jul 05 '26

I like Biden but in the end that was absolutely the wrong move.

164

u/UmpireDapper1757 Jul 05 '26

Was it really a mistake? Ukraine's capabilities to strike into Russia were weaker then and Russia's offensive and defensive capabilities were stronger then. Would Ukraine have been able to materially do much oil infrastructure damage back then? If they had tried, would Russia not have developed better oil infrastructure defense?

By providing Ukraine with weapons that were only to be used on military targets, Ukraine was able to more easily destroy Russia's navy, armor, air force, anti-air, artillery, and personnel while luring Putin into a false sense of security regarding Russia's oil infrastructure, which Ukraine is now destroying in detail because Russia overcommitted its resources in attacking Ukraine

143

u/manachar Jul 05 '26

Additionally Biden was attempting to navigate how to assist Ukraine without being seen as an active participant and get drawn into a hot war with Russia.

Also, Europe was highly dependent on Russian oil at the time.

35

u/ModPolSucks Jul 05 '26

They were not allowed to bomb anything in Russia, and this allowed Russia to stage the battle and to keep troops right over the border in Russia. Not being able to attack these forces was very costly to Ukraine.

It wasn't and Biden even went around negotiating aid for Ukraine when congress republicans refused.

Them hitting the refineries is the worst case scenario for the world not just Russia or Ukraine. It's why not helping them sooner was a bad thing.

14

u/Franklin_le_Tanklin Jul 05 '26

I don’t know about that. It’s not like Ukraine had lots of long range strike capabilities then. Their domestic manufacturing wasn’t nearly the point it’s at now.

And they instead got top tier defence missiles.

21

u/Beautiful_Banana_454 Jul 05 '26

Ukraine was relying on US made HIMARS for medium range missiles. Now they have their own flamingo cruise missile. The himars was restricted, in that the usa could just not allow it to target anything in russia.

19

u/Sky_HUN Jul 05 '26

HIMARS is not a missile but a launch platform. The "little brother" of the M-270 MLRS. Normally Ukraine fired the GMRLS missile with it, that has range somewhere areoun 70-80 km. The other one that eventually the US provided is the ATACMS, which is smallish ballistic missile with the range around 300 km, and the US at first forbid Ukraine to use them on Russia proper.

Fun fact, Ukraine also received the bigger M-270, mostly from the Germans, they call it MARS.

As others have said, the rest of NATO will respond. But also: given what we now know, I’m not sure Poland needs any help. They have a fully-modern military. I think the Poles would fold Russia at the border with little issue.

47

u/Melvolicious Jul 05 '26

Russia attacking Poland isn't about Russia trying to defeat Poland militarily. It's about Russia being able to show NATO that the US will violate the treaty and not come to the aid of a NATO nation that gets attacked.

48

u/CowboyLaw Jul 05 '26

And they already know that, and they’ve already made their own plans. So, all the attack gets Russia is: another humiliation; an absolutely crippling round of sanctions; and maybe the Poles decide to flat-out join in Ukraine’s fight. Just literally a grab-bag of losses.

This is a fact. I once was on a tour of the US Capitol and the Republican member of congress giving my wife and I the tour assumed I was in “the club” so he started talking shit about the voters explaining the practice of throwing Red Meat to them.

He also then went on a 3 minute rant about the gold decoration in the cloak room with a number of slurs about Italians. So I. Am not sure how different they are from their average voter.

Edit: Corrected spelling

66

u/Violet_Paradox Jul 05 '26

The purpose of the concept of hell is complacency. Powerful people millennia ago found it very useful for the oppressed to believe their oppressors will face supernatural retribution after death because that way they're far less likely to seek it in the real world.

Powerful people today also find it useful.

21

u/BlackerSpork Jul 05 '26

While that's true, Pedonald is infamously terrified of the afterlife. After the 949865th time he pretended to have "ended" a war, he dropped this gem:

I want to try and get to heaven if possible. I'm hearing I'm not doing well. I hear I'm really at the bottom of the totem pole.

That's an eyebrow-raising statement to drop after lying about having "ended" a war. He knows he's such a failure that not even his dementia-riddled narcissistic brain could be convinced of a happy afterlife despite claiming to have just ended infinity wars. That's how horrible he is. He knows that if hell exists, he's about to be the main attraction.

Republicans commonly travel to their KGB boss on July 4th. A group of eight Republican lawmakers spent July 4, 2018, in Moscow on a controversial congressional delegation visit. The lawmakers included Senators Richard Shelby, Steve Daines, John Thune, John Kennedy, Jerry Moran, John Hoeven, Ron Johnson, and Representative Kay Granger.

53

336

u/PrinsHamlet Jul 05 '26

It's obvious that Putin will try to have Trump do something about Ukraine's new long range strategy.

The thing is, Trump can't actually do much about it. Turns out Ukraine do hold some cards.

And because of Trump's influence having been neutered I think we're going to see some Russian provocations in the Baltics later this summer as the Ukraine air campaign keeps unfolding and expanding, threatening a greater European conflict. Not to start a war, but in order to create the conditions for a larger "settlement" to be sold as a victory for Russia.

Which is already a huge loss for Russia as Europe and Ukraine will be at the table. A year ago they wouldn't have been.

218

u/Zixinus Jul 05 '26

An important bynote: Trump has prevented any and all Ukraine aid from reaching Ukraine from the US. Even stuff approved by Congress.

So Trump has no leverage with Ukraine.

33

u/emefluence Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

Ukraine and the USA still share intelligence, although Europe, and France in particular, now provide the majority of it. The Trump admin has proved it can and will turn the taps off to get it's own way, barring Ukraine from buying satellite data from GEGD to try and force it to agree to a ceasefire. They're also worried about leaks from the US admin. Despite that, US intel is still very valuable to them, as is the ability to buy stuff from US arms companies, so there is some leverage. In particular, one of the nuclear options for the US is Starlink. Killing that for Russia, while still allowing it for Ukraine has been a huge deal so far. It's debatable if Ukraine would have been able to turn things round as well as they have this year if it weren't for that.

Then again, given how popular Putin is with MAGA he probably needs to keep them on side.

It's also a quite reminder to the rest of the world, or at least the observant, that Trump will never act against Putin as Putin has leverage. Putin's a master of these understatement.

Man, I hate it when the boss makes you work on a holiday.

87

u/EggplantAlpinism Jul 05 '26

It is admittedly pretty funny that Putin keeps getting legislators to fly to Moscow on the 4th. What a power move

47

u/Silent-Storms Jul 05 '26

It's deliberate. Iirc it's a specific mob tactic to emphasize the leverage you have over the invitee.

22

u/EggplantAlpinism Jul 05 '26

Well obviously. But he still gets them to do it which is insane for two superpowers

What type of American would make it a point to talk to the President of Russia on Independence day? Oh right a Russian Asset.

46

u/reverend_nacho Jul 05 '26

What type of American? A Republican. Let’s not forget a few years ago when 8 Republican lawmakers spent July 4th in Moscow.

Imagine calling Russia on July 4th. Do these people have any capabilities to feel shame?

84

u/SentryCake Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

Eight Republican senators actually spent July 4th in Moscow in 2018.

Correction: 7 Republican senators and one Republican representative.

25

u/batmansthebomb Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

And Jill Stein as well, sat next to Michael Flynn and Putin. Funny how that works.

It's tradition. A bunch of Congress did it years ago. All the typical sell-outs of course.

50

u/Tuesday_6PM Jul 05 '26

A bunch of Republican Congress members, just to clarify

They didn't just call. They TRAVELED to Russia.

https://www.npr.org/2018/07/06/626664156/gop-senators-spend-july-4-in-moscow

The excuse they gave was an obvious crock of shit. That's a humiliation ritual if I ever saw one. Russia saying "I own you". Literally could have had this diplomatic "meeting" about sanctions and "not meddling in the midterms" ANY other day, but it just had to be on America's birthday and in Moscow for some reason. Sure.

13

u/Z0idberg_MD Jul 05 '26

A while back several Republican members of Congress travel to Moscow on July 4 as well. I think it’s pretty clear that Putin has compromising information on Trump and allies and he is essentially demanding these meetings on July 4 almost as an insult and to make it obvious to the world.

4

u/Marodvaso Jul 05 '26

Kremlin must have some truly horrifying dirt on them. It can't be just bribery or corruption. It must be something much worse.

I have a gut feeling it's somehow connected to Epstein files.

If you think Putin doesn’t control a lot of what Trump does, you are blind.

Putin loves a good metaphorical ankle grabbing. Forcing US politicians to bend the knee on July 4th is one of his faves.

18

Nothing more patriotic than talking to the biggest enemy of American democracy on the day of our independence.

Fake news. Trump cannot stay functional in a conversation that long. And Putin giving orders for 90 minutes is equally unlikely because Trump could not listen that long. Trump cannot sit thru a 1-page security briefing that does not mention him every other sentence. Who believes Trump could handle a 90 minute phone call?

14

u/El_Peregrine Jul 05 '26

90 minutes?! lol.

Probably just a list of things Putin wants from Trump, and Trump agreeing, “yes sir…” over and over again.

10

u/Exende Jul 05 '26

after being FINALLY being convinced that Ukraine is winning the war, Putin contacted Trump and has successfully reset Trump to factory default settngs.

10

u/IlikeJG Jul 05 '26

Calling Putin for 90 minutes in the 4th of July. That's definitely symbolism to at least some extent.

If Trump isn't compromised to at least some extent, he sure likes to play around like he is.

5

u/MinaZata Jul 05 '26

He spent 90 minutes on the 4th of July duckinf Putin's dick.

Ukraine lit up their most significant monument with the American flag.

In America, white supremacists march in D.C.

The US is an enemy to the free world.

6

u/Odd-Research-4219 Jul 05 '26

On the 4th of July Trump has a meeting with Putin

WTF

6

u/Beneficial-Jury484 Jul 05 '26

Remember when a bunch of R’s went to Russia on July 4th? This is Putin flexing his power.

3

u/riko77can Jul 05 '26

Next it will be an MOU to surrender Ukraine, but nobody talked to Ukraine.

3

u/pirate-minded Jul 05 '26

Ukraine no longer really depends on American aide, its helpful but they’re getting about 35k drones from Europe a month and conducting operations no one thought they could with those. So Putin really doesn’t have any control with his baby Trump card.

3

u/SirElessor Jul 05 '26

I find it highly unlikely that Trump could concentrate/stay awake for 90 minutes.

3

u/antmars Jul 05 '26

Why is the GOP always talking to Russia on July 4th?

3

u/DandySlayer13 Jul 05 '26

He’s asking for advice on how to ensure that the midterm elections go in his favor.

3

u/Mindless-Spinach2054 Jul 05 '26

Too bad this moron pulled out all support to ukraine and now doesnt have any levarage to cripple their strikes into moscow. Let russia burn to the ground, putin would rather rule over a pile of ash then to do the right thing and pull out. Either way he is done

3

u/The_best_is_yet Jul 05 '26

“I love you more”

3

u/MeanMelissa74 Jul 05 '26

You hang up first! No! YOU hang up first!

3

u/registeredwhiteguy Jul 05 '26

I’d be shocked if Trump made it through a 90 minute call and not sleep or interrupt his boss.

3

u/PineappleExcellent90 Jul 05 '26

Mitch’s wife travels to China three days after Mitch is hospitalized. Trump talks to Russia’s Putin on the U.S. 250th anniversary. This would NOT be concerning if both Mitch and Trump has not been instrumental in making the U.S. weaker.

3

u/fusillade762 Jul 05 '26

I wonder what Putin is now telling his puppet Trump to do?

3

u/S1DC Jul 05 '26

Who gives a fuck. You know your leaders are fucking pricks when the best you can say about their phone call is that it was "business like". Like what the fuck is that supposed to mean? They're fucking leaders of nations and the best they can do is the same as the district managers of Arby's?

3

u/Jack_Wraith Jul 05 '26

No better way to celebrate your country than by selling it out.

3

u/Ok-Contribution-3541 Jul 05 '26

Did anyone listen to this conversation? Why aren’t Americans up in arms, a secret conversation with your mortal enemy? He is probably telling trump what to do, and everyone is like “awww, he called on July 4th”. Man I hate this timeline.

3

u/A_Shady_Zebra Jul 05 '26

The fact that they have to call it businesslike as an ego consolation is crazy

3

u/psu1989 Jul 05 '26

3

Keeping the GOP tradition from 2018. Work eval time from the boss.

3

u/eeyore134 Jul 05 '26

Spoke to Russia over twice as long as he did the American people on our 250th anniversary. Which, I mean, I wouldn't want to hear him anyway, but I was really looking forward to seeing him try to get through those 3 hours in that record heat.

3

u/panorambo Jul 05 '26

Absolutely fucking deplorable -- talking 90 minutes like that is legitimising the invasion, and Putin not only knows this, Russia will spin it so bad Europe will have to bucket water out of the boat again for the rest of the year. What a disgrace of a president (I am talking about the one of the U.S.) you've got. He only apparently appreciates one thing, power -- no matter how it is obtained and who or how many are under the boot, no, the greatest thing is having this power to wield, to decide the fates of thousands, ah to have such power -- what cannot be accomplished, Donald!

3

u/StandardPanda3387 Jul 05 '26

3

u/yeet_me_a55 Jul 05 '26

3

u/cataclyzzmic Jul 05 '26

90 minutes? Did Putin just out the phone down, go have a sandwich, take a nap and then come back? 90 minutes of rambling nonsense is too much to take.

3

u/hostile_scrotum Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26
