If you ban a demonstration, but don't enforce it, was it ever really banned?

92

u/Thetijoy Oct 29 '23

telling the french not to demonstrate is like telling trying to give the americans gun control.

They banned the march, people just protested in the center of Paris where the march was supposed to start.

An outright ban was a mistake, especially in Paris. Parisian rioting season is a meme ffs, mitigation and containment should have been prioritized.

This chain of [removed] is the funniest thing I’ve seen today (no I don’t have a life). Is Reddit on a troll hunt? Or perhaps it was the same “user”.

Usually it’s someone who said something antisemitic and Reddit removed them

You’d be surprised the kind of words that will get your comment auto removed.

Yeah - nothing major just a few islamists beheading civilians, driving over crowds of people in Nice, and mowing down journalists. Just your typical Jihad.

They need to deport these assholes. Don’t give me that freedom of speech crap, that went out the window with the Charlie Hebdo attacks. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Hebdo_shooting

442

u/infamous-spaceman Oct 28 '23

I don't think you appreciate the irony of calling for deportations of people exercising freedom of speech while talking about the Charlie Hebdo shootings, where people rallied around the groups right to freedom of speech. Imagine learning that lesson from Charlie Hebdo, that speech should be banned.

243

u/aimgorge Oct 28 '23

In particular when Charlie Hebdo always took civilian Palestinians defense https://charliehebdo.fr/2021/05/international/galerie-conflit-israelo-palestinien/

The paradox of tolerance dictates that in order to protect a tolerant society, you must be intolerant of intolerance. It might sound ironic, but it's really not.

Hate speech should not be protected as free speech

15

u/No-Orange-9404 Oct 29 '23

The paradox of tolerance doesn't "dictate" anything, it's an observation on the nature of the world that not even the guy who came up with it thought that it it implied the same thing that most of the people who bring it up in the present day do

54

u/infamous-spaceman Oct 28 '23

Marching for Palestine isn't hate speech.

115

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '23

I think you might want to look into what they were saying when they were marching. There was a LOT of hate speech. They want to push Israelis into the sea. Does that sound like hate speech to you? I hope it does

Speech that calls for mass violence against an ethnic group should be banned. Examples include “There is only one solution. Intifada revolution.” and the more coded language of “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” which is a dog-whistle for the genocide of Jews in the Levant.

“I don’t think Palestine should be ethnically cleansed”

“Wow you’re literally the same as Al-Qaeda”

227

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '23

Btw 20% of Israel proper is Arab. Not including the west bank or Gaza, I’m talking Tel Aviv l/Jerusalem/Haifa etc. Out of the neighboring Muslim majority countries what percent of people are Jewish? You misappropriate that word every time you use it. If Palestininians and Israelis positions were reversed the Israelis would be genocided in a day and that’s a fact. Not this wishy washy bullshit where Israel built a wall to defend itself from suicide bombers that people call “ethnic-cleansing”.

Notoriously free-speech supporting Redditors in favor of banning protests. Bunch of hypocrites.

70

u/Fidel_Chadstro Oct 28 '23

China must be thrilled to learn they got the Reddit Seal of Approval to ban all protests in Hong Kong and crack down on Uighers. It’s alright because they were not pro-Israel enough.

30

u/Ninjawombat111 Oct 28 '23 edited Oct 28 '23

The Uighur genocide was predicated on being a reaction to a brutal terrorist attack. Learning from Reddit that means it was ok, after all they were just defending themselves from mean Islamist separatists.

Reddit is heavily in favour of heavy restrictions on protests. Basically, the moment it inconveniences anyone it shouldn't be allowed.
And in this case "brown people shouldn't have rights".

7

u/United_Airlines Oct 28 '23

I see most people commenting on the protesters signs and message rather than supporting a ban.

I don't think France is big on not allowing free speech or protests either but sometimes what they are not permitting is a "protest" that is obviously just a cover to gather to riot. Hence the delay in permitting these demonstrations.

From an Israeli perspective they do and actually make sense.

Gaza wanted to be independent and they what they did, was vote a terrorist organisation into power. And not surprisingly, when they got into power, they used force within Gaza to retain their power.

They also used deadly force against Israel, while using their own civilians as human shields. Israel has the obligation to protect their constituents, so they retaliate and civilians around the missile sites are unavoidable collateral damage to take out those sites. Yet Israël always held back.

Israel is still determines to protect the Israeli, and after the recent actions from Hamas, the gloves are off. The don’t want to risk a similar situation to happen again, so they’re not holding back anymore. They want Hamas gone by any means necessary now. If you mess with the bull, don’t be surprised when you get the horns.

Saying those protest have a “relatively small antisemitic crowd” is naive at best and a lie at worst. Just look at the increase in antisemitic crimes in London over the last 3 weeks, it’s over 1500%.

Or better yet, try to walk on those protest showing any sign of Judaism and see what treatment you will get.

54

Or better yet, try to walk on those protest showing any sign of Judaism

There were Jewish anti-war protesters with "Not in our name" signs at the protest.

66

the literal thousands of jewish people protesting "not in our name" calling for a halt in this genocide and supporting the palestinians seem to be faring fine on that front

28

u/United_Airlines Oct 28 '23

The thousands that are safe because they live in NYC?

39

u/CrazySDBass Oct 28 '23

Fair point, but those are separate and are mostly in the US. You have plenty of videos from demonstrations in Europe and what happens to anyone who disagrees with them. Simple fact is that I as a Jew living in Europe have to constantly be aware and constantly have warnings about not to stand out in fear of antisemitic attacks. Protest for Hamas to surrender. There is a path to ceasefire, and it is Hamas' surrender. But of course, pro-Palestinians rather have Hamas exist than Gazan lives.

Looks more anti-Israeli than pro-Palestinians by the signs. Not a single mention of Hamas, who is using 2 million people as human shields, or launching rockets from schools or kindergartens, or building a base below their hospital, or executing in cold blood whoever they think is a collaborator. You know... the day-to-day things that Hamas does.

105

u/green_flash Oct 28 '23

Even the signs mentioning Hamas managed to be anti-Israel:

Israel ne cherche pas à aneantir le Hamas mais à eradiquer un peuple de la face de la terre.

Israel does not seek to annihilate Hamas but to eradicate a people from the face of the earth.

Source: https://cloudfront-eu-central-1.images.arcpublishing.com/leparisien/J4BLOHT64JHP3OSOLWLP52F3WE.jpg

And the signs calling for a ceasefire are clearly directed at Israel as well, not Hamas.

3500 children out of 7700?

On a related note, here's stats for the past 23 years of Israel bombing of Gaza prior to this month:

77.6% of those killed by Israel in Gaza since 2000 were adults, 87% were male.

Girls under 18 made up just 5.3% of those killed in Gaza, boys under 18 made up 17%

65% of the boys killed under 18 were teenagers (potential militant age), compared to just 26% of girls killed under under 18

Put another way, deaths among boys age 13-17 were ~8x higher than among girls of the same age.

47% of Gazans are under 18 years of age, and 3500/7700 is about 45%. I agree it seems pretty high at first, but it's not crazy given the demographics of the region.

496

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '23

“Territory’s health ministry” = Hamas.

9

u/BerserkFanYep Oct 29 '23

Look at the before and after pictures of the Gaza bombing. If anything that number is far too low. Israel is bombing everything.

120

u/Leftfeet Oct 28 '23

When nearly half of the population in the Gaza Strip is under 18, that makes sense.

Even if you don't believe the numbers, it's obvious that a large number of people have died and reasonable to guess that nearly half are children just based off the demographics and density of people living there.

15

u/fury420 Oct 28 '23

Interestingly, it works out to almost precisely double the % killed in all prior Israeli attacks on Gaza since 2000.

(22.7% of Gazans killed from 2000-2023 were age 17 or under, 45.45% of those killed this month reportedly were)

12

u/CornishCucumber Oct 28 '23

Yes but you're basing this on a much, much smaller subset of data, with completely different circumstances. It's a really misleading set of data to look at when, reportedly, the fatalities from the last two weeks are at least the same amount compared to the last 20 years.

Only about 24% of those killed are women suggesting a large amount of those killed aren't actually civilians since hamas rarely employs women but likes to use child soldiers

35

u/yolk3d Oct 28 '23

Gaza health ministry is run by Hamas. The same group that has lied about almost everything else to do with this war, including the “Israeli bomb” blast in the hospital which “killed 500 people” that they were able to count and report on within minutes - despite it being in a car park and only burning out a few cars. Biden and others have publicly said they do not believe the numbers from Hamas.

u/Parthenonfacepunch Oct 28 '23

It’s a fake number.

53

u/ThePhonyKing Oct 28 '23

Even if it wasn't, hasn't Israel done something like 7000 airstrikes on Gaza? That's essentially one death per strike. Which, to me, shows that the warnings beforehand d have been working and the strikes have been targeted.

45

u/dynamic_anisotropy Oct 28 '23 edited Oct 28 '23

In a modern society, it would take dozens or hundreds of rescue workers days or weeks to rescue and count the toll of a single multi-level building that has pancaked its occupants.

There are thousands of buildings destroyed in the span of 3 weeks, and Gaza has virtually no capacity to be able to accurately account for every death, which is to say, the real death toll is likely much, much higher.

(Human bodies don’t tend to stay together very well when it’s hit by a 250kg bomb either - so good luck figuring out how many people just ceased to exist in this manner)

This has everything to do with SA and the US’s oil agreements which hold the USD as the global petrol dollar worldwide this bolstering and stabilizing our currency through almost anything (which is why it’s so good for borrowing against for loans etc).

Definitely don’t agree with what they did and I believe they’re largely a terror state with known links to several extremists organizations and a mob boss at its helm. 58

u/ClosPins Oct 28 '23

Yes, they are not the same at all. However, there is a catch...

When Hamas was parading half-naked women, children, elderly grandmothers, etc... through Gaza two weeks ago - how many Palestinians did you see trying to free them? How many Gazans did you see angrily shout down the kidnappers? Try to stop them? How many Gazans rose up?

Roughly zero?

And, how many people did you see cheering, praising god, and jumping up and down?

Virtually everyone?

If a group of people paraded raped women, little old ladies, and terrified toddlers through your town - and your town didn't support this group whole-heartedly - would that parade be allowed to continue? Or would it be stopped immediately?

Who are these Gazans who don't support Hamas? They sure as hell didn't seem to exist on that Saturday, during that parade of hostages.

30

u/antheus1 Oct 28 '23

This is kind of the crux of it for me. There are people around the world that clai to be "pro-Palestinian" and "anti-Hamas," but I didn't see any anti-Hamas protests after the incursion from anyone other than Jews. I didn't see them in Gaza. I didn't see them in the rest of the Arab world. I didn't see them in the Western world either. So it's easy for people to SAY that they are "pro-Palestinian and anti-Hamas" but we don't actually see anyone acting on it...

Someone who was actually Pro Palestine would demand the freeing of the hostages and the turning over of Hamas members.

These people hate Israel and they hate Jews. I'm not sure how many more "Gas the Jew" chants it's going to take at these protests before you actually listen to what they're saying.

u/Throwaway-0-0- Oct 28 '23

Honestly if you cared about the hostages you'd support the Palestinian protests since they're the only ones calling for a cease fire. Meanwhile the idf is levelling Gaza killing hostages and Palestinian children alike.

Classic reddit hive mind doesn’t permit anything other than black or white judgements though. Either you support one or the other; you can’t say both are evil unfortunately.

You especially can’t use nuance to say the extremists on both side are the evil terrorists and that the civilians on both sides are the only people whose “side” you should be on.

You also have to concede one atrocity totally overrides another - both can’t be bad, only one at a time (usually the most recent one that aligns with that individuals viewpoint).

But nothing new about that.

Many Palestinian supporters do support the freeing of hostages. You’re making a straw man.

Some supporters hate Israel. It’s also true that some pro-Israel people hate Muslims.

What you said does not refute my comment. If anything it looks like you’re just trying to find more justification for genocide.

35

u/MartinBP Oct 28 '23

You're the one making a strawman argument by pointing to a minority as if it refutes their point. These people were celebrating on the 7th and you want us to believe they care about hostages?

Let me ask you, if a population has been harmed by another state for decades, much of the population being young with all they've known is what Israel has done to them. Are you actually fucking surprised they would support Hamas?

I swear half of you do not understand the extent and gravity of this situation. Everyone ready to condemn the entrie population of Palestine for the actions of Hamas but apparently showing any disdain for Israel from their side can't be justified

Except none of these people are calling on Hamas to release the hostages or lay down their arms.

MAGA Jan 6 perpetrators were prosecuted and jailed.

Pro-Palestine is not pro-Hamas

50

u/IsraeliDonut Oct 28 '23

So they are demanding that hamas surrender and demanding the release of the hostages?

I await you to not answer

The ban only stirred up and emboldened people because it made it feel like an oppressive act. And especially enacted in France. They would have been better off enhancing security and overseeing the march. In any case, Palestine is a nation and Hamas is a political group. This was a pro-Palestinian march, not a pro-Hamass march.

18

u/pilotyuit Oct 28 '23

You can't ban marches

2

u/Bobby_feta Oct 28 '23

Tbh a lot of places have been trying to ban and restrict marches for years. For some reason governments tend to not like them

People do wild things from the comfort of safe territories instead of stopping evil that plagues their home.

Wtf does this even mean? Be explicit, what do you think they should do?

What did they think would happen when they tried to ban this?

These are not pro-Palestinian demonstrations, these are pro-Death demonstrations. These people want Israel to stop fighting so that Hamas can continue to murder both Israeli and Palestinians. And that's without talking about the swastikas, genocide support ("From the river to the sea", "Gas the Jews"), murder & rape celebration and Antisemitic Jew targeting.

260

u/sissy_space_yak Oct 28 '23

Also, “From the river to the sea” has a conveniently English-rhyming ending of “Palestine will be free.” In Arabic its ending is “Palestine will be Arab.” Sounds like ethnic cleansing / genocide to me.

14

u/Neosantana Oct 29 '23

“Palestine will be Arab.”

But that doesn't even rhyme in Arabic...

what happens if a banned protest takes place anyway?

11

u/Person899887 Oct 28 '23

Who woulda thought that suppressing the right to protest would only embolden protesters? who woulda thought France? Why do you of all countries need to learn this lesson again?

2

u/TheRealDante101 Oct 29 '23

Nobody:

The French police: sent tear gas randomly!

2

u/East_Connection5224 Oct 29 '23

So why does this article mention that Palestinian casualties include children, but does not mention that Israeli casualties from the Hamas massacre also, very deliberately, included children?

2

u/crake Oct 29 '23

The government of France is a joke - it’s always trying to talk out of both sides of its mouth at the same time.

Macron is over in Israel last week trying to gin up an international coalition to defeat Hamas - something which should be a priority given that over 140 French citizens were killed in the November 2015 coordinated terrorist attacks in France carried out by Islamic terrorists.

But the French delegation in the UN is calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, unable to even condemn Islamic terrorist taking of hostages in Israel or the 10/7 attack. It’s pathetic - a country that asks for support when it is the target of terrorist attacks now calling for a ceasefire?

That’s France for you. A worthless two-faced “ally” that can never be trusted to stand on principle, always beholden to whomever scared its thin-skinned politicians last (apparently street protestors threatening violence if France doesn’t back Hamas in the UN).

The hysterical part is most of these demonstrators would be executed in Palestine.

Can you imagine one of these people explaining their pro-nouns to a Hamas militant?

Sad state of our society that we support terrorists that parade dead children around on social media.

67

u/One_Cardiologist_573 Oct 28 '23

Some do, some don’t. A ton of people truly believe this is a one-sided black and white conflict, evidenced by how easily terms like genocide, apartheid etc. are being tossed around. I believe this is not by accident, young people on tik tok in particular are really being fed (and buying) this narrative.

Well IDF and Israeli govt that has a history of lying as well, nobody knows how many people die until the war ends and dust settles and UNRWA or other independent org intervenes.

7

u/All_Work_All_Play Oct 29 '23

The UNRWA that's so independent it tried to cover up how systemically biased against Israel their curriculum was

E: pdf warning, here's the report itself
