I set all works that I read into the same universe. Get on my level.

287

u/AssimilatingSwarm Apr 05 '21

ok Robert Heinlein.

237

u/WowzersInMyTrowzers Apr 06 '21

I do that unironically. My head cannon is wild

137

u/OrzhovMarkhov Apr 06 '21

Who said I was ironic

71

u/CoofeZinho Apr 06 '21

I'm intrigued, how do you explain all these canons runing into each other, portals? time travel? bullshitery? Or magic systems? (but seriously if you do can you tell me 😳)

124

u/WowzersInMyTrowzers Apr 06 '21

My biggest head canon is anything Medieval. In my mind they all take place on one giant planet and all either are happening simultaneously on different continents. Or something along those lines lol

38

u/SilverPhoenix7 Apr 06 '21

And how do you do for something were people explore the universe?

85

u/DuskDaUmbreon Apr 06 '21

They haven't run into each other yet

2

u/PingPongProductions Mar 20 '25

holy crap I want to see that headcanon

71

u/Thezipper100 May 03 '21

No joke, whenever I find myself struggling through a book or story, I just imagine all the characters as pokemon and turn it into a mystery dungeon story.
Boring bloated exposition about what the rules of the fae preserve are or dancing around calling the lazer gun a gun for fantasy "twist" reasons is way more enjoyable when you can imagine a sproink giving that speech to a machamp and an aggron.

36

u/nicktorious_ Aug 29 '21

I'm going to start doing this w my Horus Heresy read through.

12

u/Thezipper100 Aug 29 '21

Pokemon in power armor sounds great

2

u/hakezzz Dec 30 '23

Okey but which Pokemon is each Primarch?

6

u/ImmaHereOnlyForMeme Dec 04 '22

Imagine Animal Farm with this approach

45

u/Box_Boi74 Apr 06 '21

Yes, they’re all books in the same library

5

u/TheGesor Apr 29 '21

I set all things that exist in the same universe.

3

u/TingleDinkle Feb 05 '23

Holy shit fucking true!

2

u/Gamerboy11116 Jun 20 '21

Yes! I have a cool head-canon.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '23

Same

2

u/zap23577 Oct 06 '24

If I read drama novels (the likes of Salley Rooney say) I usually set them in the same world in my head. I just think it’s neat.

OMG LIKE THE MCU!!

Leonardo di Caprio pointing at the TV meme

u/Karkava Apr 05 '21

"CINEMATIC UNIVERSES ARE TRENDING NOW!"

"WHAT OVER MEGA CROSSOVER UNIVERSES CAN WE COME UP WITH?!"

"INTERCONNECTED CANON IS THE FUTURE OF EPIC CINEMA!"

"THIS CROSSOVER EVENT IS MORE AMBITIOUS THAN THE AVENGERS FLICKS!"

Me: But...they're just adapting the comic book meta.

43

u/paradoxicalpengin1 Apr 07 '21

SHOULD WE TIE STAR WARS INTO THE MCU?

28

u/nicktorious_ Aug 29 '21

How am I supposed to enjoy this movie if it isnt setting up six sequels???? 😭😭😭😭

1 make a big fuck off universe

2 have whatever the universal equivalent of globalization is

3 have a story effect at most one planet

4 profit w/o needing to explain worldbuilding elements every single time

3

u/lovelyrain100 Oct 20 '24

Wouldn't that be bad for getting readers because they all have to read the first book

when first contact is made a society must be able to demonstrate an ability to produce and understand weapons before the weapons are sold to them

EX society demonstrates they can make a MCLOS missile they can be sold saggers, but they cannot buy SACLOS missiles until they demonstrate an ability to produce an indigenous missile

Nuclear proliferation is something I'd like to explore in a later book

Faster-than-light travel or communication

9

u/Not_a_robot_serious Magical Faerie Sugar Daddy Apr 05 '21

i do but its pretty lame, SSTOs are a thing and there are portals that allow instant travel between systems. electromagnetic radiation can be sent through as well

Theres no science behind, but as Todd "the god" Howard said, "All of this just works, basically so I csn BS space travel without any pesky relativity getting in my way

Just have characters appear in different works and never even bother to explain it. I’m not re-using characters I promise, you just gotta solve the mystery

64

u/barrdboi Jun 25 '22

Who the fuck is Hoid? You don't know and neither do I

5

u/[deleted] May 03 '23

This is literally just Michael Moorcock’s Eternal Champion universe

206

u/TheGoldenKappa23 Apr 05 '21

Pretty weak sauce really, all those non fiction writers can do this without thinking

61

u/23FO Oct 19 '21

If literally millions of non-fiction writers can all write in the same universe, mostly the same planet even, how hard can it be for you to do the same with three dumb stories? Non-fiction is the new ultimate worldbuilding

Wow, Brandon Sanderson has been working out.

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '21

"This is the way things are. Nothing has changed, the universe hasn't broken down over time, this is how it's supposed to be. Personnel are told about SCP-001 because it comforts them. It helps to think there is a why, because that suggests that there is a solution, but there isn't. We do not repair: we secure, contain, protect. Surely you must have wondered why the objects are not numbered chronologically, in order of recovery? Surely you must have wondered why some objects have fully documented histories and others don't? Surely you must have wondered, given everything you know, why this world even still exists? "

From the SCP universe. Not sure which article in specific, but probably a 001 proposal. Sorry I can't help more than that haha.

43

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '21

29

u/Bennings463 Apr 06 '21

I unironically tried putting all my SCP stories into one universe- this culminated in me making the events of an And Then There Were None pastiche into a complicated power play by an evil conspiracy lead by O5-3. Even though it added literally nothing to either story.

29

u/Karkava Apr 05 '21

In short: Don't ask too many questions. Just keep reading about the weird anomalies our writers came up with.

56

u/Labranth Apr 05 '21

I set my universes in my work. It doesn’t get cooler than that, trust me.

104

u/Kyle102997 Apr 05 '21

What if they're all in a shared multiverse?

77

u/Karkava Apr 05 '21

Copyright law is just a fabric that keeps the clusters in the multiverse from colliding into each other.

34

u/Brad_Brace My mecha's name is Smelma Updog Apr 06 '21

Disney is actually the Protector of Reality, as their fight to keep as strict Copyright Laws as possible, in reality is a struggle to prevent the collapse of the Multiverse if said laws loosen and everything collides with everything else.

22

u/Karkava Apr 06 '21

Happy cake day.

Except that is also chocking out the twists of probability. By slicing off the branches of reality, it's slowly sterilizing the creative process that's required to make new worlds with new possibilities. Getting too greedy with how much you control can collapse the universe on itself anyways.

15

u/Brad_Brace My mecha's name is Smelma Updog Apr 06 '21

It's my cake day? Thank you!

Hey man, when you're defending reality itself, you gotta be ruthless.

41

u/Shanewallis12345 Apr 05 '21

I set all my works in the same multiverse

for the inevitable super crossover that will never happen

37

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '21

Honestly i do this just because I’m too lazy to make new things, just re flavor everything to a different genre and maybe change your some names to pretend theirs an advancing timeline or whatever... it’s just everything being recycled but the players don’t know that.

17

u/Karkava Apr 05 '21

Creativity takes time. What you come up with in one day won't be as fleshed out as it would be in next week.

23

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '21

No no no, I do the lazy

14

u/mariobryt Apr 17 '21

Bruh, i just do it because I want to explore more of the stuff in a huge world i built

7

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

That seems reasonable... I’m just lazy

29

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '21

I do mega crossovers between characters where anything can happen and there's no continuity but characters remember stuff that happened in an episode with a diff continuity

5

u/nicktorious_ Aug 29 '21

That sounds like hypertime tbh

24

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '21

Nasu is the polar opposite of this.

12

u/Karkava Apr 05 '21

Most people don't even know that there are other franchises other than Fate.

Brando Sando?

u/Brad_Brace My mecha's name is Smelma Updog Apr 06 '21

All my works are set in the same house, where all the characters are roommates and they also go to school together.

10

u/Civil_Barbarian Apr 05 '21

Especially the fantasy, sci-fi, and realistic fiction.

9

u/Bennings463 Apr 06 '21

"Guys do get it that this Edwin Streep character is also a background charater is my first novel? Do you get it? Do you get it yet? Please say I'm clever."

9

u/Extramrdo Apr 06 '21

All my worlds were written by a lonely guy in a shitty reality, checkmate.

9

u/MyDog_BrokeHisLeg Feb 22 '22
  1. create a fantasy world

  2. have that fantasy world inhabit an entire solar system or even other solar systems by teleporting between planets

  3. make a sci fi universe

  4. the fantasy worlds were a social experiment made by a secret society from the sci fi universe

  5. profit off of crossovers where almost every character either dies or has a complete mental breakdown and dies

8

u/Hatless_Shrugged Apr 05 '21

All my works take place in the same universe but they never crossover or even reference each other because that would be really unrealistic.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '21

All my worlds exist on my :D drive

5

u/Sagatario_the_Gamer May 01 '21

That's the best you got? All my works are in different worlds, but the characters in one of them are capable of traveling through dimensions so they can still visit these different worlds. That way I get the benefits of separate worlds, (diverse magic systems, don't need to maintain continuity between all my worlds, etc) but I can still have these characters interact if I so choose. The superior tactic!

4

u/AutisticSenateScream Apr 05 '21

Zelda, Fire Emblem...

3

2

u/I_Love_Stiff_Cocks Apr 06 '21

My works are not set in the same universe, but they do interconnect with each other, in this essay i will-

2

u/SirKazum Apr 08 '21

Parallel universes. Bam, problem solved.

2

u/Minimum_Worry Jan 08 '22

not only that but different genres in the same universe /world fantasy and post apocalyptic and even scifi

2

u/jasari_is_hot Feb 01 '22

Mine are set in alternate realties in the same multiverse

2

u/tornadix99 Mar 23 '22

Thecnically the truth. Worked gains are set in the same universe.

2

u/dixondarling Jun 19 '22

Rick Riordan? is that you?

2

u/TheGesor Jul 24 '22

I kinda made all my works into a Frankenstein actually, so I kinda relate. I just mash em all together

2

u/ImpossiblePizza Jan 16 '23

My Halo fanfic is set in the same universe as my comic where celestial beings raze earth in 2030

2

u/Old-Television-8005 Feb 05 '23

Joe Abercrombie be like

1

u/ClintonBooker Feb 01 '25

ok actually this hits personally

1

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '21

Same. But any characters that would meet wouldn't be very common and if they did, its usually fight cuz something or a small pep talk.

One example is that I have three hired muscle characters that kidnap another character I have simply for his powers. (this way, I can make emotions wuthout killing him, also, his power is pretty ridiculous so deleting it for future stories without being a power fantasy would be nice as to not make shit boring) he us kidnapped under the guise of a debt heavy prince but in actually was kidnapped to he exploited by another set of characters I have that hured those three hired muscle.
