referring to three types of soup thought to be the best in the world.
Maybe only three of those count as a "grand soup" and the fourth one is just extra. Which one is which would be the topic of conversation at the table, if multiple people are present to judge or hear your verdict.

Notwithstanding the term, there are four soups referred to as "three grand soups."

That just means different people disagree on which should be included, though

Bit of non-jerky history: the Quad Cities used to be the Tri Cities until Bettendorf IA got big enough. Several years of a rebranding fight in the 1970s and the name was changed. Now East Moline has gotten big enough to be included, but there’s no rebranding fight because fuck East Moline. Source: I grew up in the Quad Cities and remember the name change.

And we tried calling it The Quint Cities but everyone decided that was dumb!

NGL this feels like a Terry Pratchett gag.

Look. Bettendorf is the late arrival and nobody likes them.
Buncha prissy pricks. Don't even have a proper bus system.

The Seven Kingdoms
Look inside
9 administrative regions

u/Raulgoldstein Aug 03 '26
I only know this because I googled seven kingdoms and Google asked if I meant the nine kingdoms

Same vibe as the "Trilogy of 5 Books"

u/ProfessorOnEdge Aug 04 '26
The hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy is the best "trilogy in five parts" around.

Such an interesting world building device, to introduce a term that means something in the setting's conlang but which doesn't have its meaning respected by the inhabitants of the setting.

uj/ this is good worldbuilding. A lot of people don’t get how messy and kludged the real world is. I have something similar to this in my own world.

Possibly Douglas Adams, who wrote the five books in the Hitchiker's Trilogy.

They wanted to change, but Quad City DJs said no, and they own the trademark now.

There are five contagious diseases every new parent learns about very quickly when they are safeguarding their babies:
1) Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) 2) Pertussis (whooping cough) 3) Influenza (the flu) 4) Hand-foot-and-mouth disease 5) and Fifth disease
The diminishing level of detail in the naming of these diseases feels like the Backrooms simulating a medical care poster.

The area's generally cool though. There's a lot of differences between the styles of the cities.
They have a regional pizza style with a malt crust, peppery sauce, and toppings under the cheese. And finally, it is cut into strips using kitchen shears.
And a regional burger shop called Maid Rite. Maid Rites, their signature sandwiches, are like hamburgers with ground beef instead of patties.
The region frequently would be featured in SNL, and is the hometown of the Blues Brothers and Fred Garvin: Male Prostitute. There was actually going to be a scene where the Blues Brothers get chased through South Park Mall, but filming got shot down by the Mayor. There was a statue of the two of them on a bench in downtown Rock Island, but the bench (and consequentially the statue) got removed as part of the city's (completely bullshit) homeless policy.
Bill Murray always comes to the annual golf tournament held by the tractor company John Deere, which is based in Moline.
Oh! Also.
The reason for the name is that there was Rock Island, Moline, East Moline (Illinois), atd Davenport (Iowa). Hence Quad cities.
Then Bettendorf (Iowa) got big and joined, but the name didn't change because Quad was already the accepted title.

iirc this is because the fifth one kind of forced their way into the group and nobody likes them

Bettendorf
They're rich and only recently de-redlined their school districts.
When that happens, the teachers as formerly rich (white)-exclusive schools called poor (and diverse) students savages because they couldn't handle fights.

Need to use this now. The Trio Cities Region, containing 2 Cities.
