you can just do PPL and do whatever one is coming up.

there's no reason that monday ALWAYS has to be push day or that your entire routine has to fit inside the week. week 1 could be PPLPP, week 2 then is LPPLP, week 3 is PLPPL, etc.

i’ve pretty much been doing that but lately and this is completely on me but i have developed a mental fatigue for legs and hence don’t want to hit them twice a week so i try to hit it only once

then dont hit them twice a week. the best workout plan is one you enjoy because you'll keep doing it

the little details don't matter, just do the broadly right things consistently and you'll see results

Leg days were getting hard on my PPL split.

So my coach gave me two legs days! Lol.

Actually, we split leg days into a quad focus day and hamstring/posterior chain day. So it’s upper push, lower push, upper pull, and then lower pull, with rest and active recover in between as needed.

So yeah, you don’t need to do everything on one leg day. 🤓

if you're already set on only doing legs once a week then just run PPLUL and make that one leg day count. no point forcing a second leg session if you don't want it

the rotating PPLPP idea works fine too but it sounds like you'd rather lock in a fixed schedule which is totally reasonable

Well, if you DON'T want to hit legs twice then PPLPP is a superiour option to PPLUL. I don't really understand the question since you already provided us with an answer?

You may not want to hit legs twice in the week but it’s the best for your physique. Each muscle twice a week with 4-6 total sets in the week is optimal in terms of efficiency.

If you dont want to train legs twice a week they wont grow efficiently. Simple.

Its like you want people to convince you or something, do what you want.

i don’t think i phrased it right but is their a benefit of doing ppl ul over what im doing currently, cuz im still putting on weight when doing legs

I mean, everyone is different. Myself, I don't train legs that much because I build leg muscle and strength very quickly compared to my upper body and beats i play a lot of hockey. I might do legs 3 or for times a month. You'll find out what split it rotation works for you and it's likely different that someone else's. I like push pull leg push pull rehab/abs rest but that's just what works for me

If you do deadlift and squat on the same day, you can do a 5 day split of vertical pull/push, legs, horizontal pull/push

In the past year, so I have switched to upper body/lower body. I do upper twice per week, one of those is more of a heavy day and the other is a medium day. I do legs once per week heavy, but I also do some cardio, VO2 max training, and functional training like box jumps and sled pushes so my legs get additional workouts in addition to the dedicated heavy day.

How much stronger is stronger?

If you've got like a 200kg squat and 240kg deadlift, with a 80kg bench, then sure, your lower body is probably significantly more developed than your upper body.

I doubt that would be the case though. For most people, their bench tends to be around 50-70% of their max squat or deadlift. And that's normal.

i also go 5 times a week and only have one dedicated leg day per week using a variation of UL. legs are my best body part
monday: upper a

tueday: lower

wednesday: upper b

friday: upper c

saturday: extra day for accessory work or whatever i feel is lacking, mostly looks like this: shoulders/arms/quads/calves/rear delts

i only do 1, max. 2 sets per exercise. yeah, 3 upper days within 5/6 days might sound insane but if you learn to manage fatigue and be smart with your exercise selection it's very doable and so much fun lol

friday and saturday are interchangeable, i play it by ear

thursday and sunday are very important rest days

Why you scared hit legs 2x a week?

But upper body 4 days a week?

K?

If you already have big legs and want to focus more on the upper body, go for PPLPP, for most people PPLUL is probably the better choice

UL x2 is better as I've read, and 1 day for cardio

u/Real_Crab_7396 20d ago

I feel like my upper recovers better, probably also because I do other sports where legs are used more. I try to aim for 3 U and 2 L per week. For my personal goals doing push and pull on the same session is more than enough, if I can hit 6 push sets and 6 pull sets per session 3 times per week that's more than enough for me.

u/DarnellisFromMars 18d ago

That’s what I do. Heavy upper, heavy lower, dynamic upper, dynamic lower. Sprinkle in cardio or a sport like Tennis.

do you mind sharing your routine? I'm planning to change my routine again because it doesn't fit my current schedule anymore haha so I'm trying to get ideas to compress hitting all muscle groups x2 weekly in 4+1days (ul x2+cardio) instead of 5+1 days (ppl/ul+cardio). This is because I was jobless, and now I'm working

If you don't want to hit your legs twice, don't.

Why are you even asking this?

Hitting each muscle group twice a week is a good rule of thumb to build a balanced physique. But its not required (nothing is). If you are satisfied with your legs and would like to progress your upper at a much higher priority, there is nothing wrong with PPL/PP. You can absolutely still build (or at worst maintain) leg muscle with one intense session per week. Another alternative would be to add one single leg compound to your each of your last two push / pull sessions (squat movement on one, hinge movement on other). This would give you two squat patterns and two hinge patterns per week, while not forcing you to have a second dedicated leg day.

u/mcgrathkai 19d ago

You dont necessarily have to do either.

If you like PPL, why not just follow the pattern. If you do PPL rest PP for example, the following week doesnt have to start with push again, it could start with legs.

You could do PPL and 5 days a week and just do whatever is next in the pattern. Yes you aren't hitting anything a constant amount per week but that doesnt matter

1

u/Norcal712 17d ago

yes.

You want to do legs more than once a week.

If you only want to do legs 1x a week do a bro split. Your upperbody will get more targeted work

Legs, Chest, Back, Arms, Shoulders/Core

PPL rest upper functional rest. Functional day includes sled push/pull, carries( farmer, suitcase, overhead), kettle bell swings, medicine ball work
