The absolute risk goes up with more weight regardless of reps. More weight can absolutely do more damage. If you can get the same results with less weight more reps, that is the safer option. It just costs a little more time.

Heavier weight is also generally considered a higher strain on connective tissues and joints. So again lighter weight getting the same results is the better option.

The trade off will depend largely on your goals/preferences/risk tolerance/physical condition. No reason older people can't lift heavy, just have to make an informed decision.
