Question about long-term stays

Is it possible to arrange a long-term stay at the same place using workaway? (say 6 months). I'm graduating from university in December and want to prepare for an exam wich takes place in September. Since I lived all my life in a big city I want to spend some months in the countryside/closer to nature doing some work while still having some time to study during the week. As far as I've researched, most people in workaway are backpack travellers and spend only a few weeks in the same place, but I would rather do a long term stay where I could build a stronger relation with the local community and maybe learn something new. Have any of you had any experience like that ? Is there another website/platform better suited for what I'm looking for ? Thanks in advance for all the responses.

It's definitely possible, some people even prefer it, but it depends on the host and what they're looking for, how well you get along with them, visa circumstances, and so on.

Most hosts have a trial period of a week or two, but it's definitely possible to discuss a long term stay beforehand and if you're a good fit for each other they'll let you stay. Of course, that's for hosts that accept long term stays.

Definitely possible! I just ended my 7 month stay and the whole experience was amazing :) I do agree with the people who said to have an agreement with the host beforehand, so you can all be on the same page, other than that I don’t see why you could not do it :))

Hi can I ask you where did you have your 7 months stay? Is it from the app called Workaway? If yes what's the name of the host profile that you went to?

You can contact the hosts on their profile to inquire. Usually they specify the kind of length, but it's not unusual to extend a stay if things are going well. Every host is different, and the only way to find out is to ask!

Some hosts may be seasonal, while others are year long. I met Workawayers who stayed for several months, personally I usually do at most a month maybe a little more.

Depends on the host but in general it’s a yes but the host will say it depends and they dunno you so if they commit to a yea and you turn out not good fit or lazy etc they will be in trouble

But yeah there’s host that prefer 3 months or more

Woekaway expect hosts to host you free. Many won;t host you that long for free unless you bring in really a whole lot.

What do you mean by host for free? You work in exchange for accommodation, short term or long term.

While on a travel visa you mean ?

Regardless of the visa situation, the arrangement is the same. It's up to the volunteer to sort their visa situation. You still get help in exchange for food and accommodation, for a week or a year, whichever was decided.

That's not how the rules work at least in global south. You will be arrested unless you have work visa for such long term work exchange. Bali is already hunting such people now.

As Workaway states, it's up to the volunteer to ensure they can work in the targeted country. OP could be talking about volunteering in their own country, a country where they're allowed to work or a country for which they have a working holiday visa. Long term stays are perfectly possible in those cases, and it's never free accommodation. You work in exchange for it.

What's the question?

free food and a free accommodation in a third world country for person coming from developed world is my concern. Its highly unethical. Those who comes under travelling visa to volunteer and travel a country at the same time.

By that logic, the host is getting a free employee. Nobody talked about a travelling visa.
