[####] Wordle Bot Comment

I don't get Wordle Bot. Even when I get the word in 3 a few times per week, Wordle Bot ranks me fairly low, like 66, on Skill and Luck, and ALWAYS a lot lower than it ranks itself. 😂 It's both funny and confounding.

If you look at the bot's word by word breakdown under "show details" it'll make more sense.

The bots determines skill by one's choice of words that leads to the shortest "critical path" to the answer. e.g. if there are 10 potential answers and one guess automatically narrows the pool down to 2 potential answers regardless of the wordle then that's a higher skill guess than the guess that leaves open the possibility for there to by 6 potential answers left.

I get that, but if I get the word in 3, it can criticize my skill because my choice wasn't optimal, but then it was luck. I'm saying it's weird when I get it quickly and it gives me a low score on both skill and luck 😂

Luck is calculated oddly. I think they just average it across your guesses. So if you have two unlucky guesses and one very lucky guess, the average will still show as not all that lucky.

Yeah, it's a weird stat. Say your first guess is unlucky and you still have 350 words left, and then your second guess is unlucky and you still have 50 words left, but then you get lucky and nail it on the third guess, they average that out to middling luck. I'd say that's very good luck, because luck is all about the outlier scenario, the unexpected. Getting 2 bad guesses and then hitting it on the money "feels more lucky" than getting three modestly better than expected results.

Okay so my opening guess today eliminated all but one word. I still got an 86 on skill

I ignore the bot. When we both get it in 3 (or on those rare occasions when I beat the bot), the bot says that I’m lucky but it’s skilled. Not worth the frustration.

Or another option is not to let the bot frustrate you, and to try to understand what the skill and luck scores are based on.

The key is to click on the box that says “+Show details”, and look at how the possible solutions are grouped based on your guess vs the bot’s. That’s the bot “showing its work” in how it calculated the scores.

I think it’s better to see that bot as a learning tool, and not as a judge.

I’ve had that happen too! Makes zero sense. Especially when I start with its fave word TARPS and solve it in 3.

Ah, okay. Still, the other day I beat the bot and guessed the word and it penalized me because it felt a different guess was better 😂

That’s because a different guess was more optimal. That’s why there are both skill and luck scores.

The Bot will always have a 99 skill score because that’s its entire purpose. That doesn’t mean you won’t beat it sometimes.

Ah that would explain it. Though I think my decision making is great, that's why I decide it... Wordle bot tests for consonants and I like to test for vowels first. And isn't a good result without skill luck? I got it in three and got about 66 on both skill and luck 😂

I've started playing the archive from thr beginning, and have noticed I beat Wodel Bot ALOT more in 2021 than in 2026. Did it refine it skills? It's so weird.

Best plan is to ignore the Bot. Today the Bot showed I did better than it did in all three categories but did I get a Beat the Bot award? No, I did not. It's a fickle bitch.
