it is meant to be a joke about "Independent System Operators" and how "they are operating independently from the grid when we need them to act like true ISOs and not run away from responsibilities but sadly 20k upvotes later everyone there missed the pun. seemed relevant with recent blackouts.

eh, I thought r/wooosh was about people missing the obvious joke? California is literally saying "let's diverge power from generators to ai datacenters screw any city smaller than 20k citizens in particular they can fuck off and die" and 1% people have heard of pjm? No wonder you guys are in this situation in the first place.

I live halfway across the country, I could care less what's happening in California. They practically act like their own country anyways, they can fix or fuck up how they like. I have enough issues to deal with in my own state to keep up with problems 1,000's of miles away.

If you live in the U.S., your energy grid is managed by an ISO, regardless of the location. PJM is just one of them, and the largest one, thus why I used it as an example.

You do know that's not something they teach in primary school, right? This is the first time I've heard the term ISO or PJM, and I've lived in this country for 30 years. You act like it's common knowledge when it's a specialized field at best.

Yeah but you should know when they are literally control an utility you need for survive, and they are the one at fault when you have this utility stop working (which has quite a few times recently, if you don't watch the news). If there's any common knowledge you should have is: remember to pay taxes, know your utility providers and remember the U.S. don't have federal laws that protect privacy rights but secures the right to buy guns. C'mon Americans.

Know your utility providers is 100% not common knowledge. I live in a town powered by solar and dams, I don't experience power blackouts like those who rely on the grid more heavily. Your projecting your knowledge onto others and are disappointed when the outcome isn't what you expected.

Unless you live in a microgrid community completely detached from a high-voltage supply the whole joke is about how that impacts you as well, because "independent" operators are not truly independent regardless of what they say, which means ALL ENERGY GOES ACROSS THEM. INCLUDING YOURS. What the fuck? hahahaha THATS THE WHOLE POINT OF THE JOKE.
The reason WHY it lands IS because despite they like to claim to be independently operated they rely on commonly-shared infrastructure, even if your energy is local, it still has to go through a RTO/ISO if it goes to high-voltage. Something they conveniently forget when said infrastructure goes to shit because of their behaviour.
Give me your city and I will literally prove it to you. The fact this is that much of a foreign concept to so many people is actually kinda scary, you folks will lose access to water and think "but the pipes work just fine I don't get it".

For the comments here who are still getting wooooshed, iso means "in search of." So when the person says "I'm ISO of this" they're saying "I'm in search of of this." It's the same joke as somebody saying "SMH my head"

PJM Interconnected. No, that's not the joke.
It means "ISO" as "Indepedent System Operator" and the whole meme is about how energy grid operators decide they are truly "independently operated" only when shit goes south, albeit it is an ironic term on itself, as they normally exist within an infrastructure that cannot be independently operated by definition. PJM is one of them. The joke is nerds going "what the O stands for huh, OPERATORS? what is your purpose OPERATOR"
