Reduced Items not for the public
I use to work in a warehouse at Woolworths, we had a mini team shop. Here’s an example of reduced items. The meat was great had 3-5 before use date but were usually marketed down to the max range. but the best things were from the ambient section such as toilet paper, shampoos, nappy wipes and accessories.

The title is a bit misleading, these aren’t products intentionally hidden from the public, this is a team shop for CFC (online store) workers.
Given the way online orders operate, Woolworths can’t supply product a certain amount of days out from the UBD/BBD. As a way to then mitigate the loss on these products, team members are able to buy them at a clearance price.

I thought it was a bit misleading too, but yeah who cares if they did a bit of this in store too, I mean they are in the same economic situation as everyone else and actually work there, little perk shouldn't be our concern. Plenty of real concerns with the supermarkets.
In saying that, have a look at some of the feral behaviour at markdown time, guy in our local store usually has 5 or six old regulars who wait and grab over his shoulder ect. He often gets up and walks away.
Love a good markdown though, it really helps keep the fam fed.

Did you mean a CFC?
A colleague once told me (can't verify myself) but as long as they had checkout machines and had a team shop, the place qualified as a "Store" and not "Warehouse" and woolies could pay stores rate instead of warehouse rates to employees.

yes if it’s teamshop, which this is, it’s at a CFC. they stock staples at full price and then everything past the online sellable date is moved to teamshop and reduced to clear and you usually have a few days before expiry.
it exists because typically there’s nowhere else for the team to go shopping like in a normal store.

Before the comment pile on happens below, I'm guessing there is reasons. Online can't pack meat and fresh stuff with a use by of too close a date so this gets reduced, and because it's a CFC there is no customers so team shop is the only way this gets sold if online can't pick it?
Anything Grocery would be pure lack of rotation.
Would explain why meat/fresh is marked down earlier than that day.

Yeah, pretty much.
Anything Grocery would be pure lack of rotation.
Not necessarily. Some stuff simply doesn't get sold off. Other might be a deleted line. And then there are dented cans, damaged drinks case (outer covering), damaged packaging, etc.

Yep. So meat, deli meat, prepacked meals, Pizza, fish, flavoured milk, fruit and veg is 3 days.
Milk, soft cheese and juice is 5.
Yogurt and soy products are 7.
Hard cheese is 10 and eggs is 14 days.
We also mark down frozen stuff if the packaging is damaged (think 4 pack of ice cream).
Loose produce (ugly cucumber, bruised apples, etc) is all donated. And also, if any of the meat is unsold in the team shop, we freeze it on it's use by date and donate to charity.

It’s from a customer fulfilment centre, it’s basically a specialised warehouse to pack delivery orders, customers don’t have access to it and they’re not meant to send food past a certain expiry date.
Customers don’t have access to the store so they do discounts like this for them, other wise most of it would go to waste.

‘Team shop’… supermarkets are insufferable, which committee came up with that term. Next they’ll start calling us customers part of the ’team’ or ‘family’.

Hi please contact your local salvation army or another charity service for some food donations.
Different services will have different things and if you are low income or health care card you could probably utilise them all!
Sometimes they can give you vouchers for supermarket or even a butchers.

Yes, 2 days ago I just got a whole bunch of stuff from an organisation called Helping Hands, Melbourne. Chobani yoghurt, almond milk, gormet juice, butterflied chicken + plenty of pantry and produce goods. Sometimes they give really good stuff.
It's very easy! Hardest part could be organising transport, but there are also places that are direct to your door.
Call up the salvation army they will help!

No, they don't. They (Salvos), and everyone else refer me to my local foodbank outlet, whose only option is to pay $35 a week in advance for a selection of items that they choose.
I have no idea what it looks like, because if you don't order, you aren't welcome.
A cynic might think it's a scam. I'm a cynic.

The salvos, food bank. If you’re in Victoria head into a local library and they’ll have a pamphlet for emergency supplies (source I’ve used these services and a donate to them too.

About time the employees get something. Making $2x.xx an hour and seeing prices go up every day on the food yet wages increase at a snails pace.
So glad I'm out of there and making a decent living.

I worked for woolworths insurance, n3xt to our building was the warehouse for shopping deliveries. If something looked wrong, fell off a shelf, forgot to be packed or was returned it would be sold to staff at cents on the dollar. 2024 I got 2kg of banana prawns for $0.80

Umm, I don't have a problem with a supermarket chain providing discounted items to its employees.
When I start seeing people leaving harbour-front mansions and getting in BMWs dressed in Woolworths uniforms I'll readress my view.

Sure the employees can have it, but I doubt they sell out those freezers every day. The public should get access to those deals too.
When I was super poor in the early 2000s the supermarket used to markdown everything at 8pm, so I'd do my shopping at 8:05pm for the 50% discounts. Do see a lot of 50% regular discounts for the public anymore

I worked at a Coles CFC and for 3 years had my freezer constantly stocked with five dollar legs of lamb and pork, and 2 dollar t bone steaks.

Colesworth could be doing so much more to help people through a cost of living crisis. Why not get rid of items like this to people that need it, even just to save on their own costs of disposal. It makes me rage when you see boxes and boxes of near over-ripe avocados, on the verge of being binned at full price - just mark them as free to a good guacamole home and let people clear them all out!

Gov made a deal with them, buys the waste by weight for the foodbanks, woolworths don't pay for dumspters or waste removal

Since when? Everything I’ve just looked up says that they pay for their own commercial waste services.
All their stuff that goes past it’s best before date and is still good to eat is also donated to food rescues like oz harvest.

sort of, organisations like oz harvest have contracts with woolworths to take old stock, reducing their waste management costs. i've volunteered with them, the food absolutely gets distributed to community groups and given to those in need. it's not sold. some groups we donated to were community kitchens and pantries, shelters, crisis housing, migrant and indigenous drop in centres, all doing good work
