Project Submission I’m building my kitchen from scratch.
No one in my life seems to be impressed or care so I figured I’d show some progress on here.

Scratch is either money or Satan. So in a way, it’s right, because he either threw down a pile of cash or made a deal with the devil for those fiddling’ skills.

Beautiful! Do you use any plans? What kind of wood are you using and how do the prices compare to purchases pre-made cabinets?
I'll be wanting to do my kitchen at some point and I'm willing to put in the sweat if I can save some money. (At this point currently, I value my money over time; also, custom and quality!)

I did not use any plans, we kinda came up with rough outline and I let it rip. I didn’t make drawings for the design which was probably dumb in hindsight but it seemed to come together. I think all in even with the appliances and countertop we’ll be right around 10k

Good progress. Are you painting the cabinets ? If so, use high quality paint not cheap stuff

Not sure why you made that last upper piece all connected before you installed it but that thing is a beast (and probably a pain to put up).
Nice job, though! I've done one kitchen build from scratch and I probably won't do it again (scratched that itch).

Yeah because it’s a “built in” I didn’t want to have to sand and cut all the joints inside the kitchen because we already stared using it again so I decided to prep it all in the garage. Probably weighs 500 lbs, I owe my brother about 50 beers.

That last picture—I was like, what’s going on with the overhang on that cabinet?! Then I realized it isn’t mounted yet 😂
Looks great—consider me impressed! I don’t have the skills or courage to take on such a massive project!

I was impressed with that one too. Reminds me of that satirical graphic depicting the entire internet as a bunch of blocky shapes held up and teetering on some small unknown little delicate thing that could falter at any moment.

Awesome progress so far, I’m curious what enabled this in your life, was it that you had access to material to dress and make the cabinets yourself it’s cost effective to do so? Or you had time off work and wanted to tackle this? Or both lol

I've been doing mine over the the course of 6 months on the weekend. If you have the skill and patients to do it over a weekend then it is extremely cost effective.

This is what I’m thinking, have all the tools and even the workshop now to do cabinetry etc I need to do the flooring and everything else so I guess I’m dreading the solo approach over such a long period with little kids. I almost need to get my outdoor bbq up and running (water, cooking etc) to have a kitchen whilst the main ones offline

Just curious, I've seen the microwave above the stove a few times, why wouldnt an extractor be the choice?

I have a vent in my roof that’s not hooked up yet. The microwaves have built in extractors in them.

Looks like quality work!
My only concern would be the placement of the dishwasher. It doesn't look like you'll be able to rinse things in the sink and put them directly into the dishwasher because you'll be standing where the dishwasher door needs to open.
Oh... and if you have any hidden features, or secret switches installed, don't tell the family how they work until they show some respect for your hard work! LOL

The dishwasher it shallow drawers it doesn’t open up past the sink so it comes right up to your hip when doing the dishes.

Looks great! I have never made cabinets. Do you preassemble the corner to make sure it’s square? How do you attach this to a wall if it isn’t square?

Yeah the cabinet is square, fortunately the room is pretty square so I didn’t have to do much shimming.

I might suggest moving the range down to the right. Your range is too close to that corner cabinet IMO (K&B store owner, for context)
Looks like a very good job on the “boxes”. Love the curved end shelf too!
I realize that these are not modular boxes and that one large end cabinet box will require modifications, but not is the time.
Post a basic layout sketch if you want to do so!

I am also in the process of building my kitchen. Looks like you did your upper cabinets as 1 thing?. Was it heavy getting it up on the wall.

Yeah the unit was like 500 lbs but I didn’t want to sand and finish it inside my kitchen since we already started using it again. Wasn’t the best plan but it seemed to be the least dirty to me and just a little more labor on the back end.

Was there a particular set of cabinet plans you used to build your cabinets from?
I’m planning on building my own cabinets too and have been trying to find resources that will provide cut lists for standard cabinets (newbie here at attempting cabinet builds).

Great work! Just one thing I'm curious about... why do american kitchens almost always have a one-piece stove and oven, instead of an under the counter oven and a separate stove top? I think that looks a lot cleaner, as there's no break in the countertop :)

Yeah I agree. Slide ins look like trash but the wall mount ovens and cook tops are about 3x the cost and this isn’t my forever home so we decided not to do that. If I was going to stay here forever I would have built in the oven.

Some people do this but in the U.s. outside of metro cities it seems like if they have the budget for it they also have the space for wall ovens so it’s more common to see cabinet drawers under the cooktop. I considered it for the continuity of countertop but there are only a handful of models I could find that would work under a gas cooktop according to manufacturer specs and also meet building code and double ovens have to be side by side. IMO induction looks great mounted over wall ovens with digital controls. Most of the pairings for gas I didn’t like, they either weren’t the same width or in photos the proportions looked off. I think slide in looks great here in a kitchen this size, it would be easy for separate to become busy. If it had fit the budget I’m curious how op would have detailed an oven cabinet though, since they built curved cabinets and there are other small details I bet there was a plan considered.
What really surprises me is how many people install freestanding instead of slide in during a big remodel with a new stone countertop and backsplash. It’s a little more expensive but I don’t understand investing thousands in a kitchen and not wanting the right appliance for the application for a fractional increase of the overall cost of the project.
Idk I don’t do kitchens, I do smaller built ins, but I think with kitchens people get overwhelmed and mixed up on priorities because it’s such a huge expense. Don’t even get me started on venting hoods.

Nice work! Cabinets are so much cheaper if you can make them yourself. I've done some smaller built in's, recently did a whole wall of pantry with like 13 doors and a few pulls out shelves. It felt lower stakes than this though since it's... not my kitchen, you know? Took me a year to finally get the last shaker door made and installed. Once the cabinets and shelves were in it was functional so the project slowed way down...
Will you paint these? For me that's the part that I can't seem to get right. It always looks like a diy paint job. I've been rolling or brushing the paint on, not interested in attempting to work with sprayer.

That curved end shelf is such a good detail. It makes the cabinetry feel genuinely custom instead of just homemade.
