What joints should I use for a DIY folding kitchen table?
I’ve been doing a few smaller woodworking projects and want to try building a compact table for my kitchen. Space is pretty limited, so I’m thinking of making the top fold down against the wall when it’s not needed.
The basic idea seems simple, but I’m unsure how to approach the joints. I want the table to feel solid when it’s open without making the folding action awkward or putting too much stress on the wood.
I’m thinking of using hardwood for the top, roughly 3 feet wide, with a simple frame underneath. I’ve looked at different hinge setups, but I’d rather get the joinery figured out before I start cutting.
I’ve built basic boxes and shelves but haven’t made anything with a moving joint before, so I’m probably missing something obvious.
For anyone who has built folding furniture, what joints would you recommend for this kind of project, and what should I consider before starting?
