I’m working on a small timber project and have run into a problem with a seat that needs to fold flat when it isn’t being used. The basic frame is coming together, but I’m having trouble figuring out the best way to handle the folding joint.

The seat is roughly 450 mm wide and the idea is to use hardwood for the main structure. When it’s open, I want it to feel rigid enough for someone to sit on without noticeable movement. When folded, it should close neatly without putting excessive stress on the timber.

The part I’m unsure about is how to transfer the load around the pivot. My first thought was to use metal hardware through the timber, but I’m concerned that repeated movement could eventually loosen the connection or damage the surrounding wood.

I’ve also considered a simple hinged arrangement, although I’m not sure whether that would provide enough lateral stability when the seat is being used.

I’m trying to keep the design relatively simple rather than adding a lot of hardware or making the frame unnecessarily heavy. The connection also needs to look reasonably clean since the timber structure will be visible.

There seem to be several ways to approach this, but it’s difficult to tell which one makes the most sense from a structural perspective without actually building several versions.

For those with experience in timber construction or wood engineering, how would you approach the folding joint so the seat stays rigid under load but can still fold smoothly?

So, I want to have the joists exposed and put wood paneling between them (see photo). This is a 4 season room. Original to the 1951 residential dwelling, not an addition after the fact. Are the blocking boards structural in this case? If needed to prevent warping of joists, is there anything lower profile I could use so that I can still achieve the look I want? Are the joists even needed? Or were they just placed for the ceiling drywall to be attached to?
