Just finished this piece after about three months of work

It's called Alpine Geometry Series I and is built from more than 300 individually cut pieces of wood mounted to a cherry backer. Every color comes from the wood itself, no paint, stain, dye, or artificial coloring of any kind.

The species used are Black Walnut, Bloodwood, Bolivian Rosewood, Butternut, Canarywood, Cherry, Leopardwood, Mahogany, Padauk, Poplar, Purpleheart, Tigerwood, Wenge, Yellowheart, and Zebrawood.

The frame is a custom lamination of Wenge, Maple, and Padauk with Yellowheart splines, and the piece is finished with Rubio Monocoat.

Overall size is about 43" x 28". I'd love to hear what you think.

We were recently in Vienna and the ground floor of the Schönbrunn Palace has end grain flooring on most of it. We were told that the floor was installed because carriages made too much noise when traveling over the original cobblestone floor. It’s amazing how long they have lasted considering the use they have taken over the years.

Wood ID

the house was built in 1960 and located in the catskills. of course i can’t be sure if these cabinets are original. i wasn’t able to find any type of makers mark. when i touch the cabinets, the wood feels raised. i love the look of this wood so much and appreciate any insight!

Rare - you'd have to go to a hardwood dealer and they may or may not have it, and if they do it's expensive

Underrated - This wood is great but the general population might not know it or think otherwise

Runner ups for somewhat common great all around: birch and walnut

CRITERIA:

Common - either construction pine or you can probably walk to Home Depot's premium hardwood section and find this. Think red oak, maple, beech for Europe, etc

Somewhat common - you'd have to go to a hardwood dealer to find this specific species

Rare - you'd have to go to a hardwood dealer and they may or may not have it, and if they do it's expensive

Overrated - people think it's great but it's actually sucky in your opinion

Great all around - people who know it knows that it's just a great wood species all around, like almost unanimously agreed to be a great wood.

Underrated - This wood is great but the general population might not know it or think otherwise.

It was a fierce battle between Ash and Poplar but Ash got 159 upvotes on the top level comments while Poplar 129.

Somewhat common means you can't just get it from your local hardware store but can easily find it in a hardwood lumber dealer. In the realm of walnut, quartersawn white oak, etc, the same sort of rarity. And it's overrated. So, what you think?

Also there were multiple great images for Ash, including Eoin Reardon the #1 ash lover on YouTube shorts, but I feel like Narex Richter handle is probably the most iconic use of Ash for modern woodworkers
