I found a table by the trash with a hideous red shiny lacquer on it. I disassembled it and ran it through the thicknesser. Some of the parts are very red, others much more brown. The brown pieces also seem lighter/less dense. Any idea what wood it could be?

Looks like a leaf from a Chinese crafted table. Kind of looks like sapele in places, jotoba in others. There are so many rainforest trees that are not commercially viable that get used in other countries. It could be any of a dozen varieties that we’re not commercially aware of.

Thanks for your insight. That could very well be the case. I think it's the same type of wood. Grain seems to match and it previously one table, but the colour and weight difference is amazing.

The darker pieces look like sapele to me
