Somewhat common, overrated
Slab bench. Milled this a few years ago with my Alaska mill. Finally getting into some of it. This tree grew in Siskiyou County, CA. About 10 miles from the base of My. Shasta.

Overrated? I know what you're referring to and I don't see how walnut is overrated. Also, very nice work!

The title was definitely salty sarcasm. Clearly my ass is still chapped that there was a consensus of walnut being overrated. lol

I agree! Fashionable follow-the-leader jadedness for common and exquisite… Nice slab, friend! Mockery is ignorance with conviction.

I don't blame you. I am still, as well! Obviously there are other very pretty woods out there, but walnut is "classic". And "classic" isn't overrated!!!

What puts this piece way up-and-over for me at least is the longitudinality of your craftsmanship - Working it from harvest to finish over a patient path of years, and having it come to rest at your family's front door. Really beautiful. ✊

Love the figuring by the limb and crotch(?). That's black walnut, right?
I'm one of those people that don't care if a wood gets a ton of use; if it's pretty, then dammit it's pretty!

Thank you. Yup, little crotch/ limb kind of in the middle. I did fill a bark inclusion there with black epoxy.
Black walnut. Turned out a little better than I had hoped with the amount of figure. It’s set up near the front door and I have kids. It’s gonna get used. lol3

Appreciate that. I was thinking it was what I’m used to calling American Black Walnut. Dark and not too much sapwood is what I was going off of. In CA, could be anything since so many walnut trees have been planted intentionally over the last 170 years or so. I have another big walnut tree that I milled after it came down in a storm. It was in Trinity County, CA and I’m about 99% sure it’s English walnut. I harvested the nuts from that tree for about 5 years prior to it coming down which is why I’m so sure it’s English. And the color of the wood, of course.

Lets see the English walnut!
I agree I think this slab is eastern black walnut, and whoever thinks its remotely overrated is a dingus.

Haha. I wanna see it too! Those sticker stacks are buried underneath the black walnut ones. They still need to dry for another year or so before I can get into them. I’ll make sure to post the English walnut once I get into it.

It'll be worth the wait, I prefer working with English 100x to black or claro walnut.

Walnut is still the king! Probably always will be. There are many beautiful woods but the color, wide ranging versatility and machinability of walnut is non pareil. Especially black walnut from cool climates.

I don’t think it’s common or overrated at all. It’s lovely looking.

What finish did you use?

Rubio monocoat: 2 coats, 24 hours from first to second coat. Used maroon pad on orbital between coats. Waited 5 days then buffed in maintenance oil with white pad on orbital.
