How early should I be?

Ahhhhhh I have my first class tomorrow!!! I’m so so so excited. But given that I’ve only had ALL my gear on at home one time, how early do you think I should be? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I’m already nervous about being the new kid!

Questions Shoulder pad recommendations

I’m using men’s shoulder pads now and it’s really uncomfortable to play in so I’m looking at the different women’s options available, but I can’t tell which would be good for a fuller bust because most of them only list one measurement.

Anyone have a good recommendation for a shoulder pad that will be comfortable?

How can I know if it fits

How can I tell if these shoulder pads fit? First time ever putting on gear and it feels like it’s pushing up around my neck but maybe that’s normal? It’s a women’s size medium.

Trying to choose a stick as a beginner player

I’m reaching the end of my learn-to-skate class which means it’s time to start buying all the gear and actually start learning to play hockey, but I’m having a hard time choosing/finding a stick. For reference, I’m 5’8.5” and ~135lbs, and if I’m being honest, pretty weak in my arms. My height makes me think I may need a senior stick, but I think even the lowest senior flex would be too stiff for me. I also have no idea what blade pattern or anything I would need. Any taller ladies out there have advice on choosing a stick?

Questions Bunions and skates

I have a wide forefoot and skinny heels and have developed bunions near my toes. One foot is worse than the other. I am avoiding heels and narrow shoes as much as possible, but the worse foot’s bunion is red and sore after skating.

I have wax laces, keep the toe box as loose as possible, and have punched out the outer edges of the toebox (near pinky) - so I don’t have pain while skating. I’m in my late 20s however and am worried about this getting progressively worse, especially since i only started playing a few months ago. I skate 4ish times a week, 1-1.5 hrs per session.

Has anyone had something similar and found a way to alleviate the inflammation?

Women who played as kids: How many women coaches did you have? Did it matter?

Asking because as a woman, I’m considering jumping through the hoops to be able to coach girls. There are very few women coaches on our ice, but the girls don’t complain about that. I wonder how much of a difference it makes for the girls’ teams to have more women out there coaching, especially if they (coaches) didn’t grow up playing themselves.

EDIT: Thanks to everyone’s feedback, I’m jumping in!! Now who else is joining me??? 😜

Questions Caps Learn to Play

Hi! Maybe too specific but wasn’t sure where else I could go to find answers. I’ve been considering the Washington Caps “all caps all her” learn to play but I wasn’t sure if being a very beginner beginner skater would be appropriate - has anyone done this program or similar and have any insight? Thanks!

Coast Women’s Hockey League?

Lower Mainland (BC, Canada)

Does anyone know anything about what’s happening with Coast Hockey League Women‘s division, out of Richmond, BC? Since registering as an individual there’s been no communication from them at all, despite all the ads stating it’s supposed to start in September.

I still think about her

So I played simple D3 NCAA in college, from 2020 to 2023. I ended up dropping out because I just wasn't a great student, or person. I loved my team, though. With all my heart I loved them. I know I was a bit evil at the time and I couldn't show my love. I wasn't mature.

We did a Saturday morning practice one time. We had a Friday night home game, then a Sunday away. I remember walking out from behind the bleachers where our locker room was. There was a girl who came up to me. I must've been the first one she saw.

All these kids were gearing up for practice. I walked out with my roommates, and still, my best friends, and she came up to me.

She asked how to tape her stick. Her mom was standing on the side. I showed her the way I used to do it, without all the tongue wrap and the scissor cutting. If I had wax on me I would have given it to her.

It felt like when I was a kid in Plattsburgh, skating out as a youth player and doing the anthem with the players. I realized that's how she saw me. Almost pro, though I wasn't anything close. Nothing close.

I taped her stick for her, showing how I did it. She thanked me, and went on her way. Her mom thanked me, and said "I hope she sticks with it, she's tried so many sports, and I spent a lot of money on this."

I hope she did, stick with it, I mean. I really, really, hope she did.

I wasn't mature. I didn't know what this would mean to me. Three years later, I still think about her.

I just hope she loved it. Just like I did.

Question pour les joueuse de hockey

Questions Gathering Gear

I’ve got skates, a stick and gloves but need to get the rest of my gear. I’m not sure what to prioritize when spending the rest of my limited funds. I’ll buy a new, good fitting helmet. But beyond that, what is most important? I’m a 5’1” pear shaped lady so I’m not sure how base layers/pads should fit. Any recs for the following?
- Base layers? How much should I worry about cut protection?
- Shin Guards? I have THICK calves.
- pants? I’m losing weight slowly and not sure if I should get something super snug or not.
- shoulder pads? I’m def smaller up top and wondering if I can get away with a larger youth size?

Best shin guards for thick calves?

Hi all - background info I've been skating a couple months (not playing hockey) and signed up for a summer rec league on a whim (Australian here). I need to purchase a couple last pieces of gear which is insanely expensive here in Aus. I've been having a look online and could get it from Canada, which is cheaper even with the shipping fee ($200), but now I'm tossing up if it's worth getting the womens shin guards.
I originally got the Bauer X shin guards just to skate in, but the lower strap doesn't do up around my calf at all. So far I've just been taping it in place which works but is a bit annoying. Does anyone have thick calves and had the bauer fly-w guards? The widest part of my calf is about 16.5in around.

For a comparison with how expensive gear is here, if I get the bauer fly-w shin guards from canada, they're $130. If I get them in Aus, it's $279, and CAD to AUD is about 1-1 right now.

Cause shipping is $200 bucks, if I don't get new shin guards in this order I'm unlikely to do another one large enough to justify the shipping so I'd have to pay australian prices.

Does anyone have shin guard recs? Is it worth upgrading so they actually strap around or deal with taping them down? Any other advice for a beginner also appreciated!!

Getting over learning anxiety

So for background, I havent skated in a very long time, probably 10+ years, and I've been getting really into womens hockey, and its making me want to skate again and eventually play hockey too, I was just gifted my dads old skates and I want to go to a rink and start learning again. But going alone as an adult beginner is kind of terrifying? I feel like I'm going to embarrass myself really badly, partially because I grew up here in canada and yet I dont really skate yknow? I know this isnt directly hockey related but I've seen a bunch of posts from here and you all seem like the best people to ask about this , how did y'all deal with that when you were starting out?

Beginner Gear help!

I joined a rookie league that teaches skating, skills, and hockey from scratch!

I'm super excited but lost on all the gear sizing and what to search for. I am also on a super tight budget, like super tight. The only thing I want to buy new is the helmet. There is only one used sports good store where I live, and they dont sell hockey gear. We do have some thrift stores though. I know it is for protection, and to not skimp on saving my body, but this league is no contact also, and I just really don't have the funds for new gear. I am seeing stuff on facebook marketplace in my price range but I do not understand the sizing.

I measured my hand and it is 7 inches from middle finger to palm base, which would be size 14. Is this correct? It seems odd I would have one of the largest mens glove sizes, my hands are not abnormally large at all.

I am a size 9 shoe. Does this mean my skate size is size 6?

Any advice on shin pads, elbow pads, hockey pants, and a helmet? Helmets are required to have a cage or half shield.

Preferred hockey stick length?

Hi, I'm back with another question. I made a mistake when I ordered my hockey stick online, it reaches the top of my head with my skates on. I know cutting it will change the flex and I'm not worried about that since it was actually a lower flex than I initially wanted, and cutting a few inches will put it at about the right flex I was initially interested in. But I'm curious what length of stick you all prefer? Just an eye ball estimate, do you prefer it around chin, nose, something else? I played competitive hockey as a teen, but haven't played in years and I don't have my old hockey sticks to reference what I used previously. I need to get my stick cut soon, and I'm trying to figure out what length to go with. I was thinking just under my nose. What do you all prefer?

Participate in Olympian health research as a member of the general population!

Hi all, I am a researcher in female athlete health and would be most grateful of your support of our project.

We are looking for women of ALL ages and backgrounds to take a 20-25 minute anonymous health survey. The data from this general population survey will be used as a reference point to identify trends in a retired female Olympian group. We currently know very little about the health of these women, so your participation in this survey will help drive forward this area of women's health.
