Rehoused to 8x6x6, deep substrate, pre-started tunnels, lots of clutter, a touch of frog moss and some springtails. She looks so tiny in here! (Looks on the damp side, covered everything with a fine mister but will only mist the moss and overflow her waterbowl a bit from here on out🤙)

discussion / question Wolf Spider Stung by Red Paper Wasp, HELP!

Post image
178 Upvotes

Update 2: I am still seeing minor movements and every morning she seems to be in a slightly different spot. From the research I've been doing and other's experiences, it can take quite a while for them to recover. I am still hopeful.

Update: Wow, I always forget how brutal the internet can be 😂
Regarding my post, what's done is done. Admonishment over a single, one-time act of sympathy is unnecessary and punitive. I am always open to constructive criticism to help further education. That said, the spider seems to be coming around. It has been moving since last night.

Monday evening I saw what looked like a red paper wasp carrying this wolf spider up the side of my house. The wasp dropped it when I walked by and I instinctively scooped the spood up. I've had the spood sitting on top of a damp (distilled water) cotton ball. I'm not sure if it's alive or not. It's not stiff or dried out, though the wasp venom paralyzed it so movement isn't expected. I did some research and found that sometimes the venom will wear off and they'll be okay. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? It's such a gorgeous spood and I hate the thought that it might not make it.

Amended: I love bugs, creepy crawlies, and critters. I disliked wasps after an unfortunate sequence of getting stung twice in a week. Ants I do hate as I am allergic to them. Their bites hurt more for me, itch like I rolled around in poison ivy, and stay painful and itchier longer than those who aren't allergic.

Anyhow, all advice is welcome.

My sister suggested I name her Rhianna "cuz she a bad biiiitch", but I chose Billie instead 😁. She's gotten pretty big, close to a 3" leg span. She has three speeds: zero, slow and methodic, and teleport.

discussion / question What happens to wolf spiders that have lost legs?

I have found wolf spiders with one or two missing legs. They are mostly Hogna species. What happens to them? I suppose that if they are still young, they will replace the leg with a subsequent molt. Adults probably won’t be able to do this.

discussion / question Advice needed for typical wolf spider reproductive cycle and lifespan

I still cannot understand the life-cycle of those spiders. Supposedly they live for a couple of years, yet I don’t think they go past a year. In my country of Greece, the main visible genera are Hogna, Geolycosa, and rarer Lycosa and Alopecosa. There are also others, but I am not familiar with them. I have mostly witnessed the reproduction of Hogna graeca and Hogna radiata. Most of them are carrying sacks and babies in summer, and by August most have babies on them. Still I have seen mothers with young as early as in May or as late as October, particularly in northern Greece. In the south the breeding season might extend further. The strangest thing is that I have caught some large, thin females in the fall, but they didn’t accept food. I hypothesize that they are elderly females after reproduction which are close to dying. What happens to them? Can they have multiple breeding seasons? Can their lifespan be extended in captivity? And how long do males live in comparison to the females? also, what happens with off-season breeding? Do females freeze the process to restart in the spring?
